Bangkok “pocket parks” to sprout across Thailand’s capital

Residents of the sprawling city of 11 million often say they lack public green spaces, with greenery only available for the wealthy — something Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has pledged to change.

Beguiled early European visitors once called Bangkok the Venice of Southeast Asia, but residents now contend with hazy traffic jams and a distinct lack of public space.

“You can see our city has many nice private properties but in terms of public investment, it is really bad,” retiree Suvit Chandthanakit, 61, told AFP.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority operates around 40 parks, but intends to double that number by adding flora to small disused plots hemmed in by motorways or high-rise buildings.

Spokesperson Aekvarunyoo Amrapala told AFP the parks — which contain walking tracks, sport courts and other exercise areas — are an effort to provide green spaces.

“It’s a big city so we try to make use of spaces to provide some nature,” he said.

Under two thrumming highway overpasses, office worker Pattaree Klongkongmuang is taking a stroll around Somdet Saranrat Maneerom Public Park.

“I just come here to avoid traffic because I finish work at the office at rush hour,” said the 36-year-old.

“I parked my car and walked around the park for an hour.”

Inside the first-ever Disney restaurant to receive a Michelin star https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/disney-first-michelin-star-restaurant-victoria-and-alberts/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 05:37:31 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1919900

A Michelin-starred meal is normally not expected at a theme park, but Disney World theme park in Florida has changed the game. Victoria & Albert’s restaurant was recently awarded a Michelin star, making it the first and only theme park restaurant to receive a star.

The Michelin Guide has announced 9 new additions to the Florida list, including the American fine dining restaurant Victoria & Albert’s, located at Disney World’s Grand Floridian Resort.

In spite of its location just minutes away from the Magic Kingdom, the restaurant operates in an upscale manner, and children under 10 are not permitted to enter.

Victoria & Albert’s, helmed by Chef de Cuisine Matthew Sowers and Pastry Chef Ally Rogers, serves course menus that feature American flavours at their finest. The menu changes according to the season, with some familiar dishes like Langoustine Tartelette and Cinco Jotas Iberico Eclair.

Food is not the only thing that is award-winning at Victoria & Albert’s. Sommelier and maître d’hôtel Israel Pérez was also awarded the 2024 Florida Service Award.

With Michelin-guaranteed cuisine and an impressive collection of more than 500 wines, Victoria & Albert’s is definitely going to officially be on the foodie map from now on.

Formula One considers Bangkok for Grand Prix https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/formula-one-considers-bangkok-for-grand-prix/ Wed, 24 Apr 2024 18:00:43 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1919506 formula one thailand

This just in: Thailand is in talks with Formula One over a potential Grand Prix taking place in the hustling and bustling Bangkok. Racy, right?

Whilst we believe that driving the streets and sois of Bangkok should be regarded as a race event of its own, there is a possibility that the already-existing Grand Prix will be held in the metropolis, specifically on a street circuit.

Last month, in Paris, Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and CEO of Formula One Group Stefano Domenicali discussed the possibility of Thailand hosting a street race. This comes as an attempt to boost the country’s reputation as a premier tourism hotspot.

The nation’s Prime Minister pitched the Land of Smiles as a prime destination to host both the Formula E Competition and MotoGp. And although nothing is set in stone, a post on X stated that F1 executives have visited Bangkok to inspect potential race routes.

With the recent increasing interest in the international racing team sport among Thai residents, we believe this classifies as exciting news for some.

NYC artist Daniel Arsham to hold first-ever exhibition in Bangkok this May https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/nyc-artist-daniel-arsham-to-hold-first-ever-exhibition-in-bangkok-this-may/ Sat, 20 Apr 2024 10:00:34 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1919108 daniel arsham bangkok

The works of Daniel Arsham have been on display in big-name museums and galleries all over the world. Now, you can expect to see his artistry in all its glory in Bangkok this May.

[Hero and featured image credit: Central Embassy]

NYC artist Daniel Arsham to hold first-ever exhibition in Bangkok this May

The New York City-based contemporary artist and his creations revolve a lot around fictional archeology. Daniel Ashram looks into contemporary objects and architecture and imagines a sort of future history where these objects are already fossilised. That way, he envisions what he thinks the future will look like, albeit not in a sort of sci-fi way we’re used to when seeing the word “futuristic,” but in a way that gets us to ponder about our future and our daily lives as we live until a new decade comes by. These notions also come into play as Daniel Arsham brings his works to Bangkok.

This isn’t the first time people of the city get to see his art, as pieces from his collection had been put on display as The Standard brand’s 20th anniversary last year. However, this will be the first exhibition of its kind. The largest of Arsham’s collection seen in Thailand so far, themed around the city of Bangkok, will be put on display as part of Central Embassy’s 10th anniversary celebration.

‘BANGKOK 3024’ shows what the artist thinks of our city as a thousand years pass, with eroded concrete and jagged edges. The Excavation Walls aim to evoke nostalgia even with objects found in the present. The Lunar Garden features sand paintings, raked into shapes by time. Five more signature pieces are planned for the exhibition at Level G and Level 1 of Central Embassy. Arsham also created one piece specifically for this exhibition, turning the whole passageway from the BTS to the department store into his signature eroded crystal textures.

Catch Daniel Arsham’s ‘BANGKOK 3024’ from 8 May till 14 July, 2024. You can find more information at Central Embassy.

More about South Korean boy band HIGHLIGHT

Did you know that HIGHLIGHT was originally a six-member band, known as ‘Beast’? Two members, Jang Hyun-seung and Yong Jun-hyung, departed from the group in 2016 and 2019 respectively. They were finally named ‘HIGHLIGHT’ in 2017 after switching agencies. While they first debuted in 2009 with the extended play Beast Is the B2ST, it was their re-debut with the mini album, CAN YOU FEEL IT? in 2017 that garnered massive attention.

After their re-debut, the group again went on a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, only to make a triumphant return in 2021 with their third EP, The Blowing. The following year, the band released its fourth studio album, Daydream, which was accompanied by a three-day concert, INTRO, in Seoul. More recently, HIGHLIGHT dropped their fifth mini album, Switch On, in March 2024.

Apart from group activities, all members have also been actively pursuing their solo careers.

ATARASHII GAKKO! in Bangkok: tickets, date, and all the info

When it comes to J-pop girl groups, many think of teenagers in brightly-coloured clothes dancing with cute choreographed moves and big smiles throughout. They’re not wrong at all. The biggest girl groups that hit the mainstream both inside and outside of Japan have been presenting images fit for an idol group with their own spin — AKB48, Momoiro Clover Z, and even BABYMETAL to an extent.

ATARASHII GAKKO! sets out to do something different: to be a J-pop girl group that doesn’t conform with the cutesy norm of being an idol group. Members Mizyu, Rin, Suzuka, and Kanon, with their signature vintage school girl outfits, incorporated many musical genres into their songs, strived to be candid in their interviews, and showcased slapstick humour in their videos. As a result, we have fun and inventive songs with a cult following, possibly the only idol group in Japan with genres of J-pop and jazz on their page, and a story they revealed in an interview of how the members met at a supermarket discount aisle.

“In a time when only exemplar citizens are acknowledged, we strive to defy a narrow-minded society by embracing individuality and freedom,” they said in an interview.

Concert details

Now, ATARASHII GAKKO! is on their first-ever world tour, with a stop in Bangkok. Book your calendar for Sunday, 23 June, 2024. The “ATARASHII GAKKO! World Tour” is coming to Samyan Mitrtown Hall, 8.30pm, and gates open at 7pm.

Formula 1 drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Alexander Albon have been spotted relaxing in Thailand before preparing for the race at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. What did they get up to? Here’s a recap.

[Hero and featured image credit: hulkhulkenberg, alex_albon/Instagram]

What have F1 drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Alexander Albon been doing in Thailand?

First held in 1963, the Japanese Grand Prix is an event that racing fans keep an eye on every year. As one of the last races of the season, it’s seen as title-deciding for many, and described as one of the most challenging circuits in Formula One.

Drivers Nico Hulkenberg and Alexander Albon are up to compete in Suzaka next week, and both the German-born and Thai-British competitor have been seen to be relaxing in Thailand before the preparations begin.

As per Nico’s posted photos, he has been riding on a tuk-tuk around town, and going for a boat ride down the Chao Phraya river passing the iconic Wat Arun. The German F1 driver was also out shopping in Chatuchak market, and passed by Imdee fishball noodle in Sukhumvit 23.

As per Alex’s Instagram, he has also been having a grand time in Bangkok. He was seen on the bustling Yaowarat road, taking photos from the Ratchaprasong sky walk, playing golf with his peers, and chowing down boat noodles.

In the comments section, fans are excited for both of the drivers. Locals are saying “welcome,” and international fans are looking forward to how they’ll perform in the Japanese Grand Prix. Whatever happens, at least they seem to have had a good time in Thailand beforehand.

Have you spotted the “interceptor” catching waste on the Chao Phraya river? https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/about-the-ocean-cleanup-interceptor-catching-waste-on-bangkok-river/ Tue, 02 Apr 2024 05:08:41 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1917603 the ocean cleanup bangkok

Is this a sci-fi movie or is it just another day in Bangkok city? The Ocean Cleanup has launched an “interceptor” on the Chao Phraya river, aimed at removing plastic pollution from the water. Here’s a closer look at it.

Black flies exploded into the air as plastic waste fell from bamboo conveyor belts into skips on a solar-powered barge attempting to remove rubbish from the main river of Thailand’s capital Bangkok.

Have you spotted The Ocean Cleanup “interceptor” catching waste on the Chao Phraya river?

The Ocean Cleanup project launched on the Chao Phraya river, its so-called “interceptor” — a boat-like structure trailing a floating barrier — using the river current to funnel plastic into the barge’s waiting jaws.

The global non-profit, founded in 2013 by then-teenager Boyan Slat, aims to remove plastic pollution from the seas in part by preventing synthetic waste from ever reaching the oceans.

“The Chao Prayo is actually the largest, the single largest source, of plastic pollution for the Gulf of Thailand,” Slat told AFP.

“The Gulf of Thailand is, of course, very important ecologically, but also economically for tourism and fisheries,” he said.

“It’s very important to us to tackle this plastic pollution here.”

The Bangkok project, which has taken roughly two years to launch, is a research collaboration with businesses and local officials and Ocean Cleanup’s fifth “interceptor” project researching pollution prevention in Southeast Asia.

Working with Chulalongkorn University, Ocean Cleanup mapped the Chao Phraya’s currents to determine the best location for the interceptor — a difficult task given the river’s 500-metre (1,640-foot) width and its busy traffic lanes.

Positioned at the point where around 60 canals join the main river, ticking bamboo-slatted treadmills carry the collected waste into the barge, where it is deposited into bright blue skips and taken ashore to be disposed of by local authorities.

Penchom Saetang, from the environmental group EARTH Thailand, told AFP that while removing plastic from the river was important, getting chemical pollutants out of the water was also vital to restore the river.

“There are several causes (of chemical pollutants) and these include chemical use in the factories, as well as agricultural uses,” she said.

In the modern age of information and social media, as a media brand, we need to follow trends in order to keep up with others within the industry. The rapid rise of influencer culture has also caused us to feel the need to diversify our content. Body diversity has been an important issue that the globalised world has been discussing for several years now. After all, the beauty standard long set by society has been questioned, and many companies — including those in the media and fashion world — have embraced the idea of body positivity by opening up more doors to those who do not conform to the outdated norms.

As such, we’re jumping on that bandwagon, and an OnlyFans account will allow us to penetrate this market, along with exploiting our writers in more ways than we could imagine. Prepare for more content than you may be willing to see.

According to Knight Frank, “someone with a net worth of USD 30 million or more” is an ultra-high-net-worth individual.

Using the data and based on this cut off, Seasia Stats, a statistics page, compiled a list of top 30 countries by number of UHNWIs.

The Knight Frank Wealth Report 2024 shows the change in the number of UNHWIs from 2022 to 2023. It also shows a projected growth over the next five years, which means that the country with the most high net worth individuals may just change over the next few years.

The projections give a glimpse into the current GDP growth rates of the respective countries.

Singapore had 4601 UHNWIs in 2022. Thus, its 2023 number marks a 4 per cent increase. It is projected to have 5535 UHNWIs in 2028, a 15.7 per cent increase from 2023.

Similarly, Indonesia saw an increase of 4.2 per cent to its UHNWIs in 2023 from the 1420 it had in 2022. It is expected to add 34.1 per cent more by 2028 to reach 1984 UHNWIs.

Elon Musk’s X cancels Don Lemon’s show after tense interview https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/elon-musk-don-lemon-x-cancels-show/ Thu, 14 Mar 2024 09:00:43 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1915864

Tesla CEO and X owner Elon Musk sat for an interview for Don Lemon’s show—and then X announced it had been cancelled.

Most of the interwebs are in agreement that Elon Musk is, at the very least, problematic. His once-glossy reputation as the real-life Tony Stark has since waned significantly, now replaced with being the guy who goes on odd tirades against billionaire ex-wives and makes anti-Semitic remarks.

This would have meant nothing if he was just another rich dude who goes on social media to say a lot of sometimes weird, sometimes racist remarks (there’s another guy like that who might end up being president again). But Musk also owns X aka the Platform Formerly Known as Twitter, and he touts himself as a paragon of free speech.

After X recently cancelled Don Lemon’s yet-to-be aired show, that may not seem like the case anymore.

X cancels The Don Lemon Show after a tense interview with Elon Musk

Back in January, X tweeted that they had struck a new content partnership with former CNN anchor Don Lemon. The Don Lemon Show was going to have 30-minute episodes that dropped three times a week on the platform with Lemon exploring a range of topics. Apparently, for his first episode, Lemon decided to focus on the singular individual who’s become the face of X: Elon Musk.

Just today, X announced that it had cancelled the partnership. “We reserve the right to make decisions about our business partnerships, and after careful consideration, X decided not to enter into a commercial partnership with the show.”

No official reason was given as to why the partnership fell through.

“I don’t have to answer these questions”

Lemon’s interview with Musk was apparently quite tense. “Elon Musk is mad at me,” Lemon said in a video he posted on X. He also went on Instagram and explained that Musk cancelled the partnership only hours after their interview.

In an appearance on the former news channel he used to work on, Lemon gave a glimpse of the interview, which is still set to air on March 18 on YouTube, on podcast platforms, and ironically, on X. In the clip, Lemon asks if Musk feels any responsibility to moderate hate speech on X and mentions the anti-Semitic “Great Replacement Theory”.

“I don’t have to answer these questions,” Musk replies. “The only reason I’m in this interview is because you’re on the X platform and you asked for it. Otherwise, I would not be doing this interview.”

“I couldn’t care less”

It’s interesting and quite telling that it only took a few hours (at least, according to Lemon) before Musk cancelled the show. Ironically, the very tweet that announced the cancellation said, “X is a platform that champions free speech, and we’re proud to provide an open environment for diverse voices and perspectives.”

Musk went on X to give his reason as to why Lemon’s show was cancelled. He said it was because Lemon lacked “authenticity”.

In the very same clip, Lemon asks Musk about the criticism he gets regarding free speech.

“I’m criticised constantly,” replies Musk. “I couldn’t care less.”

How to plan your Songkran holiday leaves this April 2024

Every year, Songkran is celebrated on 13-15 April to mark the beginning of the Thai New Year. Traditionally, water is used to symbolise purification; washing away our bad luck and sins, along with paying respects to our ancestors. Some people use the festival as a sign to start anew, making merit at temples and family gatherings.

These days, while you can still wake up early and make merit, many look forward to the huge water fights happening throughout the kingdom. And by huge, we mean huge. National holidays are announced, streets are closed for parties, and tourists fly in to participate. It’s an all-out water festival people plan their whole year around.

Those living in Thailand are normally entitled to national holidays during the Songkran period, with public holidays spanning 13-15 April. It is commonly known as the longest string of public holidays in a row.

In 2024, there’s also official confirmation that the cabinet has declared one more day (12 April) to be a special holiday. This means a five-day weekend — silent mode on your emails until you’re back and ready.

Planning leaves

Every year, office workers pay close attention to the announcement of the Songkran public holidays, as those who plan strategically, can get a long string of days off without having to take official leave.

Thereby, in order to get the most out of your Songkran holiday in April 2024, plan your leaves around 12-15 April. Using only three days of vacation leave on 17-19 April ensures a 10-day holiday. If you have more days available, 8 April is also a public holiday as substitution for Chakri Memorial Day. So, using 6 vacation leaves from 9 April onwards will get you a 16-day holiday. That’s more than half a month. Look forward to your co-worker making jokes about missing you when you get back.

Green ticks indicate potential dates for vacation leaves

Since it’s the festival of water, it is also worth looking at other provinces within Thailand for vacation. They celebrate Songkran day throughout the country, anyway. If you’re thinking of partying throughout the long holiday, “Wan Lai” is a Songkran celebration after actual Songkran, perfect for those who simply want to party more. Pattaya has a big annual Wan Lai Festival that doesn’t end until 19 April. Check the dates for every province carefully.

The difference between men’s and women’s brains, explained https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/difference-between-mens-and-womens-brains/ Thu, 07 Mar 2024 07:00:09 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1914772 male vs female brain

Is there a difference between men’s and women’s brains?

The question of whether the brain has a sex has occupied the scientific community for decades. A study recently published in the journal PNAS provides further insight into the matter, since its authors claim that brain organisation patterns differ according to biological sex.

The difference between men’s and women’s brains, explained

Researchers from Stanford University reached this conclusion by taking advantage of recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI). They developed a deep neural network model that they taught to classify functional MRI data, to determine whether it was able to distinguish between men’s and women’s brains.

After training this AI on around a thousand cases, the research team then presented it with functional MRI scans of some 1,500 people of both sexes, aged between 20 and 35. The investigators found that, in 90% of cases, this artificial intelligence model was able to distinguish between men’s and women’s brains.

The academics found that the artificial intelligence analysed the very organisation of the brain, particularly that of the striatum, the limbic system and the “default mode” brain network, to differentiate between the different brain scans. “This is a very strong piece of evidence that sex is a robust determinant of human brain organisation,” study co-author, Vinod Menon, said in a news release.

The danger of stereotyping

To extend their research, Vinod Menon and colleagues set out to test their deep neural network model on two other cohorts, without additional training. In particular, they wanted to see whether this artificial intelligence model would be able to predict the results of individuals of both sexes on certain cognitive tasks. This proved to be the case, prompting the scientists to reaffirm their hypothesis that the functional characteristics of men’s and women’s brains have “significant behavioural implications.”

But the conclusions of this study should be interpreted with caution, despite its rigorous methodology. The authors themselves note that they are unable to state with certainty whether the brain differences they observed “arise early in life or may be driven by hormonal differences or the different societal circumstances that men and women may be more likely to encounter.”

Currently, the scientific community largely agrees that the intellectual aptitudes of men and women are not genetically programmed into their brains. The cerebral differences observed between the sexes do not allow generalisations to be made, which puts an end to sexist preconceptions. For example, there is no evidence to suggest that girls are “naturally” less gifted than boys in scientific subjects. Advances in neurobiology have established that every brain is different. The variations observed between individuals are not simply a question of sex, but rather of cerebral plasticity.

Deepika Pandukone confirms pregnancy, expects first baby in September https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/deepika-padukone-ranveer-singh-confirms-pregnancy-announces-birth-of-baby-in-september/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 05:18:17 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1914119

Deepika Pandukone and husband Ranveer Singh have confirmed that the actress is pregnant, and will expect their first baby in September.

Indian entertainment power couple Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh have it all, whether it be success in both their professional public lives, or the one they lead together at home. And more blessings are due for the couple where the latter is concerned, as they prepare to add a new addition to their family.

After considerable speculation among fans that the highly vaunted actress may be with child, both Pandukone and Singh took to confirming the news via a joint post on their official Instagram profiles respectively. In suitably adorable fashion, the pregnancy post left no doubt as to when the 38-year-old award-winner is expected to give birth: September of this year.

Rumours first started swirling concerning Pandukone’s pregnancy when she was spotted on the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) red carpet just about a week ago when it was claimed that she had been attempting to conceal her growing baby bump.

According to an unnamed source speaking with The Week concerning the star’s much-anticipated pregnancy, Pandukone is currently in her second trimester. Joined by the union of marriage in 2018 during a private ceremony held in Italy after dating for six years, both entertainers share a common enthusiasm at the prospect of becoming parents together.

Denmark-born Pandukone is expected to star in two new films that are scheduled to debut in 2024, namely Kalki 2898 AD and Singham Again, the latter of which she will co-star alongside her husband. As for Singh, he was last seen playing the titular role of Rocky Randhawa in the romantic comedy Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

‘Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket’ TCG is coming to mobile this year https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/pokemon-trading-card-game-pocket-tcg-is-coming-to-mobile-this-year/ Thu, 29 Feb 2024 12:00:29 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1913754 pokemon tcg mobile

The next official Pokemon mobile game has been announced, and it seems the TCG is well underway to debut this year. Here’s what we know about Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket coming to mobile.

‘Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket’ is coming to mobile this year

Pokemon Day is celebrated on 27 February, marking the date the first Pokemon games were released back in 1996. This year, The Pokémon Company has received much hype for the announcement of the new open-world instalment of the series with Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Albeit a bit more niche in terms of player base, the fans of the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) also got to celebrate as the mobile version of the card game was announced.

First published in 1996, the Pokemon TCG was received warmly by fans. They could use cards to battle out with their favourite pocket monsters, and many treat them as rare collectibles with the most expensive card (Pokémon Illustrator [CoroCoro promo]) recently auctioned off for more than USD 5 million.

As with many card games on the market, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic The Gathering, the Pokemon TCG comes with a competitive scene, with both online and offline championships complete with big prize pools and many followers.

Bringing the Pokemon TCG onto mobile is a great way to preserve the life and popularity of the game, introducing the game to a new fan base that prefer their casual games to be in hand-held format. Now match-ups could be happening on your way to work, waiting for your queue at a restaurant, performing open heart surgery, and more.

Through a two-minute teaser, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket shows a quick battle system made for mobile, pack openings, and a trading system with friends. The mobile TCG will arrive on both iOS and Android later this year, free to start.

You can find more information at Pokémon Trading Card Game.

Louis Vuitton’s ‘LV The Place Bangkok’ is a first for Southeast Asia https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/louis-vuittons-lv-the-place-bangkok-is-a-first-for-southeast-asia/ Wed, 28 Feb 2024 05:13:04 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1913563

A boutique, a café, a restaurant by Gaggan Anand, and an immersive exhibition space: Louis Vuitton’s ‘LV The Place Bangkok’ truly is a first for Southeast Asia.

Billed as a 360-degree retail concept,  Louis Vuitton’s ‘LV The Place Bangkok’ finally opened on February 28 at the newly renovated Gaysorn Amarin. After weeks of rumours and speculation, we can finally reveal what’s in store at this exciting new space.

News first leaked of culinary revolutionary Gaggan Anand’s involvement through a restaurant at the spanking new luxe Gaysorn Amarin (an extension of Gaysorn Village), called ‘Gaggan at Louis Vuitton’, with early reservations apparently streaming in. But it soon became evident that there’s going to much more to the highly anticipated ‘LV The Place Bangkok’. Indeed, from the inspiring architectural elements to dynamic scenography and original menu items at a café and restaurant, respectively, visitors can expect to discover the breadth of imagination and creation within the Louis Vuitton universe.

Occupying two floors of the downtown retail complex, ‘LV The Place Bangkok’ has created a dream-like environment from its corner location where the façade is enhanced with giant diamond shapes reminiscent of Louis Vuitton’s iconic monogram that glow at night. From the inside, the exciting space plays out as a multi-faceted integration of retail, dining, and culture.

Visionary Journeys

On the ground level is ‘Visionary Journeys’, an exhibition that explores the Maison’s heritage like never before. The scenographic experience developed by globally renowned architectural firm OMA and Partner Shohei Shigematsu, marks the first instalment of OMA and Louis Vuitton’s collaborative partnership, imagining an architectural identity for the exhibition concept. Thematic rooms are constructed into distinct environments recontextualizing historic and contemporary pieces and immersing visitors in the foundational pillars of savoir-faire, innovation, travel, and creation.

Starting with a ‘Trunkscape’, where 96 trunk modules have been assembled as a tunnel, the exhibition transports visitors directly into a story of craft and ingenuity. This is followed by ‘Origins’, which highlights the specific and notable contributions that the Vuitton family made to the Maison as a 360-degree staging of archival documents and items detailing early inspirations and designs. Trunks from the late 19th century illustrate how Louis Vuitton began as a trunk-maker, while examples of the monogram canvas through the decades reflect the continuity and innovation of a living brand.

Dedicated to ‘Iconic Bags’, the next room celebrates 25 years of fashion history at Louis Vuitton through the lens of five iconic bag models (Alma, Keepall, Speedy, Noé and the Petite Malle) and how they have been reinterpreted by the Maison’s artistic directors – the likes of Marc Jacobs, Kim Jones, Nicolas Ghesquière, Virgil Abloh and Pharrell Williams – advancing both craftsmanship and style. To emphasise the unique shape, form, and importance of these icons, 21 bags and two ready-to-wear looks are captured in 19 clear acrylic bubbles that convey the collective contribution of these visionary designers.

The penultimate space, ‘Collaboration’, dives into the artistic relationships that have yielded some of the most popular and memorable bags in fashion history. Reimagined by Stephen Sprouse, Richard Prince, Takashi Murakami, or Yayoi Kusama, seven original creations speak to the boundless potential of collaboration, while a semi-circle of animated screens transforms a backdrop of 184 chrome-dipped bags into a cinematic showcase of each artist’s distinct pattern. Finally, a surprise awaits visitors as they part in the form of a ‘Giveaway Room’, where souvenirs can be won and collected.

Le Café Louis Vuitton

Also located on the ground floor, Le Café Louis Vuitton exudes a lush ambiance blending botanical design elements with chic details of the Maison, from a monogram parquet floor to furniture referencing the iconic ‘Objets Nomades’. Here, the patisserie selection tempts with cakes, tarts, parfaits, and ice cream sandwiches in an array of flavours, each decorated with a signature Louis Vuitton flourish. These tantalising treats include the Star Blossom Cake, a chocolate and caramel cake; the Monogram Cake, a pistachio with orange blossom cake; and a locally inspired iced refreshment called Mango Sticky Rice Fizz, made with mango and sticky rice-infused syrup with a splash of tonic water. Mirroring the climate of the Southeast Asian city, the interior boasts the use of natural materials like wood, raffia and plants. The pièce de resistance is a large, curved counter where the dessert selection is displayed, and clients can explore the confections at their leisure.

The Boutique

Elegant yet infused with vibrant touches, the store at ‘LV The Place Bangkok’ extends across the upper level in an immersive and contemporary shopping experience. Amidst vintage furniture arrangements and colourful artworks, the layout proposes the men’s and women’s product universes in greater fluidity, curated to capture and captivate the most discerning of clients seeking exceptional design above all else. Those seeking exclusivity can look forward to the launch of the Alma Nano Rainbow available in five colours, a women’s Cruise 2024 T-shirt available in four colours, and a men’s LV Trainer Upcycling sneaker in a unique colourway. These products are worldwide exclusives and only available at this boutique. Personalisation is available through hot stamping with a special “Nong (meaning younger sibling in Thai) Vivienne” design created especially for the opening.

Gaggan at Louis Vuitton

Also on the upper level, celebrated chef Gaggan Anand has curated a “food journey” offered across both lunch and dinner for the Maison’s first restaurant in South Asia, ‘Gaggan at Louis Vuitton’. This culinary adventure is signalled by a pyramid of trunks which lead into a room of undulating walls punctuated with resin structures by Draga & Aurel, LV monogram flower lamps, and fringed curtains. The fine dining restaurant accommodates 10 Italian marble tables where diners will experience a seasonal menu exclusive to Louis Vuitton and based on the 5 “S” – Sweet, Sour, Salty, Spicy and Surprise. From Thai-inspired dressed lobster to a mushroom recipe in a Damier pattern, each composition is presented on a distinctive dish. Moreover, for clients seeking the ultimate culinary experience, a private dining room provides a view to the kitchen at the press of a button.

With works from local and international artists on display throughout the space, the overall concept embraces the vibrancy of Bangkok with cross-cultural flare, just as ‘LV The Place Bangkok’ extends the ambitious global lifestyle vision of Louis Vuitton. Bringing a wider cultural experience into a single store, this 360-degree concept for Gaysorn Amarin no doubt establishes a new blueprint for Louis Vuitton spaces to come.

From floating markets to fine dining: What did Roger Federer get up to in Thailand? https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/roger-federer-in-thailand-floating-market-mango-sticky-rice-photos/ Tue, 27 Feb 2024 10:04:54 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1913433 roger federer thailand

It’s been two years since the legendary Roger Federer retired from professional tennis. Last seen in Thailand, let’s see what Roger Federer was up to on his recent visit to Bangkok.

After about five months of no updates, fans were ecstatic to see the former tennis star posting about his life again. After all, even if we may not see him on the court again again, he is the tennis star many grew up cheering for in the living room by the television. As Roger Federer posts his updates in Thailand, maybe you’ll want to explore the kingdom by following his steps again as well.

From floating markets to fine dining: What did Roger Federer get up to in Thailand?

On his Instagram post with the caption “Floating through Thailand,” Roger Federer is shown to be in one of Thailand’s acclaimed destinations: the floating market. Floating markets are filled to the brim with great street food with reasonable prices, souvenirs, and refreshing juices — as pictured in one of his photos. Of course, the experience wouldn’t be complete without a quick trip down the waterway in a traditional hat. Roger Federer made sure he did not miss out on this.

Apart from that, he also posted a photo of a plate of mango sticky rice. It’s a dessert that has rapidly come to be something everyone should try, so much so that a lot of cocktail bars in Bangkok have turned the dessert into drink form, rapper and singer MILLI ate it on stage at Coachella, and many are calling it one of Thailand’s soft powers.

In another post, Roger Federer is seen on a tuk-tuk being driven around town. The video is aptly captioned: “Fast and Furious, Tuk-Tuk Edition.”

Apart from his own social media posts, the athlete was also spotted by fans at The St. Regis Bangkok, Banyan Tree Bangkok, Poomjai Garden, and practicing tennis in an unnamed field in Bangkok.

Fans have been elated at the sight of Roger Federer in Thailand, with comments welcoming him to the country, talking about the bountiful F&B scene, and expressing their happiness considering that the star hasn’t posted for five months. Thai tennis star Paradorn Srichaphan also expressed his welcome, urging for both to catch up. Keep an eye on this space for an update on this.

Singapore has provided a grant for Taylor Swift to perform in the country https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/taylor-swift-eras-tour-singapore-sg-skipping-thailand-malaysia-asean-clause/ Fri, 23 Feb 2024 08:50:30 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1913186

Taylor Swift has made headlines for much of her celebrated career, most notably in 2023 with the arrival of her much-hyped Eras Tour, which is set to arrive here at Singapore as part of its Asia leg on March 2. With millions of fans crowding into sold out stadiums across the United States and South America, the record-smashing Eras Tour had Swifties in Europe, Asia, and Southeast Asia in a chokehold, all awaiting their moment to catch the legendary singer live on home ground. But there’s just one caveat — Taylor Swift will be skipping all other Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines.

On June 21, 2023, Swifties across Southeast Asia — most notably Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines — were stunned to learn that Taylor Swift would only be performing in Singapore, with the Eras tour bound for our National Stadium on March 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9.

The shocking revelation, which excluded the 10 other nations that make up Southeast Asia, led to public expressions of disappointment among Swifties who had long wished to see the Taylor Swift in action.

Tickets have long since sold out across all available dates, with fans across Asia expected to fly in for an experience to remember.

The ASEAN clause and why Taylor Swift will only tour in Singapore, skipping Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines

Many Southeast Asian fans have since made peace with Taylor Swift’s singular Singapore stop, which will also feature singer Sabrina Carpenter as an opening act. However, a recent report in the Thai Enquirer featuring Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has added fresh fuel to the controversy surrounding the ASEAN leg of the Eras Tour.

While reports have long circulated among Swifties of an exclusivity deal that prevented the superstar from performing in other ASEAN countries, Thavisin appeared to confirm it at a recent Bangkok business event. Speaking up following a discussion with global concert promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group, Thavisin expressed his disappointment at the arrangement, alluding to the ‘clever’ use of a clause.

According to Thavisin, he had recently been made aware that Swift’s team had been offered USD 2 million to USD 3 million per show in exchange for exclusivity rights. He then went on to add, “If I had known this, I would have brought the shows to Thailand,” noting that “concerts can generate added value for the economy.”

As the highest-grossing tour of all time and the first to surpass USD 1 billion in revenue, Swift’s Eras Tour is certain to positively impact the revenue of all its hosting nations. While Singaporean Swifties have proven to be the biggest winners in this scenario, those with keen business instincts will see the ASEAN clause for what it is: a good business decision.

In response to Thavisin’s interview, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and the Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth (MCCY) have released their own joint statement, affirming their involvement in providing a grant towards the concert. As per reports from local news media, the statement expressed that tourism sectors like hospitality, retail, travel, and dining were likely to benefit from the event. This method of driving the economy does not differ from those of other cities in which the starlet has performed. With over 300,000 tickets sold for the Singapore leg of the Eras tour, local businesses can expect to see a bump in revenue during the week of Swift’s concerts.

Following the Australian leg of her Eras tour, Taylor Swift will be heading over to Singapore as part of the tour’s Asia leg, where she is scheduled to perform six shows on March 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9.(Image: Taylor Swift/Instagram)

Understandably, these reports are disappointing for Taylor Swift fans in Asia who have failed to secure tickets for the Singapore leg of the Eras Tour. However, there appears to be hope on the horizon. Many fans are speculating that the ASEAN clause is set to expire at the end of 2024, which leaves the door open for Swift’s potential return to the region. While details are scant on the ground, the speculation nonetheless provides some much-needed hope for Swifties who want to catch the songstress live.

In the meantime, Swifties who have secured tickets can gear up for the Singapore concerts. Even those who have failed to secure tickets can experience the magical Eras Tour concert film, which is slated to stream on Disney+ come March 15 this year.

Singapore to set the stage for Swift’s Eras tour

With less than a month to go before Taylor Swift’s arrival at Singapore for the Eras Tour, fans and businesses alike are gearing up with swift specials and exclusive events. As the official presenting partner for the event, Marina Bay Sands unveiled exclusive experiential and staycation packages that are set to welcome inbound Swifties into the lap of luxury. It is a true testament to the spirit of Singapore’s Swifties that these packages, which start from SGD 10,000, are fully sold out.

In anticipation of the global superstar’s imminent arrival, Jewel Changi Airport will also be hosting a three-hour sing-along session led by singer and Swiftie Joie Tan and local band 53A. The event aims to pay tribute to Taylor Swift ahead of her Singapore concert tour dates, where fans in attendance will be able to practise their fan chants and socialise amongst Swifties like themselves. Attendees will also receive exclusive Changi Airport Group friendship bracelets and an extra packet of beads to craft their own to wear to Swift’s upcoming concerts.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

– Why did Taylor cancel her concert in Thailand?

Taylor Swift will only be performing in Singapore for the Southeast Asian leg of her Eras Tour in 2024. Swift has considered performing in Thailand before, though. In 2014, Taylor Swift cancelled a sold-out concert, which was to be held at the Impact Arena Muang Thong Thani in the Nonthaburi Province. Reports from Time suggest that this was due to a military coup that had occured in the country at the time.

Taylor Swift has achieved global fame, and her Eras Tour has been sold out in venues across the world, including in Singapore, where she is scheduled to perform on March 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9.

Here’s every Thai 711 snack Ed Sheeran tasted and rated on his viral TikTok https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/ed-sheeran-711-snacks-tiktok-thailand/ Thu, 15 Feb 2024 05:48:46 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1912263

After his culinary trip to Jay Fai with Gaggan Anand and getting his sak yant tattoo done, Ed Sheeran is on another quest to try out some Thai 711 snacks. Here’s everything he tasted, and where to buy them for yourself.

British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran seems to have had a busy week after his two concerts in Bangkok. He stopped by at Jay Fai and took a photo with the Indian culinary wizard Gaggan Anand, and even got himself a new sak yant tattoo.

Yesterday, he posted a video on TikTok where he tried out some of the popular Thai snacks sold at the 711 convenience store. Here’s everything he tasted and where to buy these snacks for yourself.

Thai 711 snacks Ed Sheeran tasted and rated on his viral TikTok

Jele Chewy Jelly (Mixed Berries)

Were you one of those who were tricked into believing that drinking Jele Beauty Drink would make you a beauty? We won’t blame you since we were tricked, too, and the taste wasn’t that bad either. The one that the British singer tried was the Jele Chewy Jelly (Mixed Berries), on which he commented, “it tasted literally like jelly.”

You can order online on Shopee.

Dino Park

Not to be confused with Jurassic Parks, this dinosaur-shaped seafood-flavoured snack has been thriving with its playful catchphrase that “its deliciousness will never be extinct.” While we’re not certain how true they stay to their own catchphrase, Ed Sheeran on his first try, said it “doesn’t taste like anything.” This is something most Thai people agree with. However, after a few more tries, the singer admitted that he liked the aftertaste of these cute dino-shaped snacks, ranking it as his favourite of the lot.

You can order online at 711 Online.

Tomato Flavoured Cracker

Last year, this tomato chip brand made its mark on the map thanks to BLACKPINK’s Jisoo posting a story on her Instagram, and suddenly the world went into a frenzy about this tomato flavoured cracker. But did Ed Sheeran love it? Judging from his reaction on the video, it doesn’t seem like he hates nor loves these tomato chips, but he noted that it “definitely tasted like tomatoes.”

You can order online 711 Online.

Oishi Green Tea (Japanese roasted rice)

For a product that features green tea, Oishi’s Japanese roasted rice flavour doesn’t look like it has any in it. For his review, Ed Sheeran commented the same, pointing out the orange colour of the bottle in contrast to the ‘green tea’ label.

You can order online at 711 Online.

Popcorn Major x Tao Kae Noi Seaweed

Ever heard of pop-corn-flavoured seaweed? We hadn’t heard of it either, so thank you, Ed. It’s a collaboration between the popular Thai seaweed snack Tao Kae Noi and the pop corn from Major Cineplex Thailand. Unsurprisingly, the singer was clearly perplexed after he tasted it. Clearly, among everything he bought, this was his least favourite Thai snack at 711.

Were we all good and abiding fans, dutifully returning our Coldplay bracelets at the end of the concert? You may be surprised.

Anyone who has been to a Coldplay concert will be familiar with the illuminating LED Coldplay bracelets. About the Coldplay bracelets: What are the LED wristbands for, and how are they sustainable?

Amongst the long list of sustainable practices for their ‘Music of the Spheres’ tour, the LED wristbands are undeniably a major highlight. They are made from 100% compostable, plant-based materials, and are designed to be reused show after show. This has allowed Coldplay to reduce their wristband production by 80%, through collecting, sterilising, and recharging them after every show.

At the time of writing, the average Coldplay wristband return rate is 86% during the first year of the tour.

What is the ‘Sleepy Girl Mocktail’ that is helping Gen-Z fight insomnia on TikTok? https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/what-is-sleepy-girl-mocktail-tiktok-trend-recipe/ Wed, 31 Jan 2024 22:00:15 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1910495 sleepy girl mocktail

Sleep is crucial to our well-being, but these days, restless nights and insomnia are unfortunately commonplace. On TikTok, some internet users think they’ve found the miracle solution in the “sleepy girl mocktail,” a drink that combines tart cherry juice, magnesium and prebiotic soda. But does this mocktail really help you drift off to sleep? Experts aren’t so sure.

On TikTok, wellness influencers are currently promoting a remedy that’s supposed to help people fall asleep more easily. Called the “sleepy girl mocktail,” this concoction requires just three ingredients: tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and prebiotic soda. This creation was popularised by Gracie Norton, an American influencer, whose video has attracted over a million curious viewers. According to her, these ingredients are the perfect blend for a good night’s sleep. And she’s not alone, since the #SleepyGirlMocktail hashtag has over 50 million views on TikTok.

What is the ‘Sleepy Girl Cocktail’ that is helping Gen-Z fight insomnia on TikTok?

https://www.tiktok.com/@gracie_norton/video/7215025334532574506

At first glance, this bedtime cocktail seems harmless to health. But does it really live up to its promise? While tart cherry juice and magnesium contain melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep, their real effectiveness in helping people drift off is still open to debate. At present, there are still too few studies on the subject to draw definitive conclusions, and those that are available have been carried out on limited samples.

Is the Sleepy Girl Mocktail a placebo effect?

According to Marie Pierre St-Onge, a professor of nutritional medicine at Columbia University, interviewed by the New York Times, tart cherry juice does contain melatonin, but in tiny quantities compared to products specifically designed to promote sleep. One study found that 100 grams of tart cherry juice contained around 0.01% of a milligram of melatonin.

As for magnesium powder, although it is recommended to improve sleep, there is no solid scientific evidence to support its sleep-inducing qualities. A 2022 analysis of nine papers on this supplement showed links between magnesium intake and better sleep, but randomised controlled trials have often concluded that there is no significant effect.

As for prebiotic soda, such as the Olipop used in the TikTok recipe, its usefulness for better sleep is uncertain. “While there is some evidence that prebiotics can support better sleep, prebiotic sodas are pricey, and it’s hard to say if they’d have any immediate impact,” dietician Samantha Cassetty told Today. “The ingredients in prebiotic sodas can trigger digestive discomforts like bloating, gassiness and diarrhea, and they don’t come with the benefits that prebiotic-rich whole foods offer.” Other TikTok videos suggest alternative recipes for the mocktail, replacing the soda with sparkling water, for example.

According to Dr Pieter Cohen, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, this mocktail is unlikely to be harmful to health. However, he told the New York Times that its effectiveness could be due to the placebo effect, highlighting the power of conviction.

Truly epic in every sense of the word, Universal Studios has shared the first glimpses of the upcoming Universal Epic Universe as part of the Universal Orlando Resort in Florida, US. The fourth theme park of the resort will have astounding never-seen-before attractions, rides, dining and shopping destinations, and luxury hotels. So, get ready for the adventure of a lifetime as the gates swing open in 2025.

Universal Epic Universe spans 750 acres (over 3 square km). It will have five stunning worlds — Celestial Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, How To Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk, and Dark Universe. Within them, lie over 50 unprecedented and unforgettable experiences.

Universal Studios released an announcement video on 30 January 2024, which details the 500-room lavish hotel next to the park.

This colossal project has been underway since 2019 and was expected to be ready by 2023 but was delayed because of the pandemic. The Universal Epic Universe joins the line of other magnificent parks — Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal’s Volcano Bay water park.

More about the five themed worlds, their offerings and other details

Celestial Park

“Celestial Park is the cosmic heart of Universal Epic Universe, where wondrous discoveries await among the lush greenery, tree-lined walkways and dancing fountains. Begin your cosmic journey of discovery in a world between worlds full of sensory delights for all to enjoy together,” states Universal Studios.

This is your first destination in the new Universal theme park that connects all the other worlds. The magnum opus is aptly described as a “world in and of itself” by Brian Robinson, Chief Creative Officer, of Universal Creative.

Setting the stage for what’s in store, the entry itself is quite a spectacle. Dotted with gardens, beautiful waterways and several shopping destinations, the Celestial Park is the key to the portal.

Among many things, the new racing coaster called Starfall Racers and the lively Constellation Carousel are the highlights. Enjoy the beautiful pathways, gorgeous architecture and animated fountains and waterfalls.

Another major attraction is the Astronomica. “An interactive wet-play attraction designed as a compass rose that points to the portals and attractions around Epic,” it lights up at night for an extravagant view, states a Universal Studios blog.

This is a haven for shoppers. Visit the Nintendo Super Store for official toys, merchandise, apparel and souvenirs. For those looking to satiate their taste buds, details of two themed restaurants have been revealed — Atlantic and The Blue Dragon Pan-Asian Restaurant.

The Atlantic will be surrounded by shimmering waters of Neptune’s pool and feature floor-to-ceiling Victorian glass walls. It will offer fresh seafood and surf and turf options.

Meanwhile, The Blue Dragon lives up to its name with neon dragons and a pan-Asian menu with delicacies from China and Japan. Visitors get to dine under lanterns and glowing constellations. They can also grab a drink at the Tiger Bar.

The Helios Grand Hotel is also located next to the Celestial Park and is within walking distance from the Epic. It “offers a fantastical world where the heavens and earth unite to elevate your stay at Universal Epic Universe,” states Universal Studios. The full-service hotel has celestial decor and a Mediterranean theme about it.

The Stella Nova and Terra Luna hotels also offer a resplendent staying option. Although they feature the same galactic and constellation theme, both have different offerings.

Both hotels will have 750 guest rooms each, resort-style amenities and several food and drink options. While Stella Nova opens on 21 January 2025, Terra Luna opens on 25 February 2025. Visitors can book their rooms now.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

The Fantastic Beasts franchise is the muse for this themed world. Guests can step into Paris of the 1920s and traverse to the British Ministry of Magic in the 1990s. “Explore international wizarding communities and the magic that connects them in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™ – Ministry of Magic™,” states Universal Studios.

This comes as Universal Studios’ third Harry Potter-themed park after Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley.

Super Nintendo World

Next in the Epic Universe is this adventurous world where you can relive the Nintendo experience in person. From a Mario Kart race to venturing through Donkey Kong Country™, there is a lot to look forward to here.

This themed world comes in line with other Universal Studios’ Super Nintendo parks in California and Japan.

How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Want to unleash your inner warrior? Visitors can head to the Isle of Berk in this themed world to reach the skies with dragons. Revive the How To Train Your Dragon film franchise experience through the Viking village at the centre of Berk, participate in boat battles and dine like Viking lords.

Dark Universe

Taking cues from the Universal Monsters, it carries visitors back to the dens of Dracula and Frankenstein. The official description states, “From the experiments of Dr. Victoria Frankenstein to a shadowy landscape where monsters roam, Dark Universe is a world of myth and mystery.”

When it comes to mixing and matching gold jewellery with silver, I am all up for it, especially when it’s Tiffany & Co. This Schlumberger Sixteen Stone Ring in 18k yellow gold with diamonds is such a dream. We already know that Jean Schlumberger is a visionary when it comes to designs and aesthetics. Tank Louis Cartier Bangkok Edition

Although it is not the first time Cartier came up with a Thai-inspired edition, this collector’s item definitely takes a standing ovation. That’s due to the diamond-studded crown, which is a big deal in the Tank series. Besides that, it’s the dazzling sunray pattern on the dial and the back cover is engraved with the words “BANGKOK” and “LIMITED EDITION OF 67 PIECES.” – Aekkachai Angkulthivakorn, Managing Editor

Onitsuka Tiger x Astro Boy

This collaboration is the first to celebrate the brand’s 75th anniversary, and although it’s a super fun and young collection, there’s still this street fashion essence. Featuring the original ASTRO BOY logos and designs, I personally adore the shirts because they are easy to wear even in Thailand’s hot weather. The collaboration also presents Onitsuka Tiger’s legendary MEXICO 66 SD model with the ASTRO BOY design. It’s exciting to see these two renowned brands partner as they’re both known for releasing something iconic in the same era. – Pannatorn Tamnipanon, Senior Writer

Vanilla bean ice cream, extra virgin olive oil, and flakey salt

https://www.tiktok.com/@claudiasulewski/video/7320465689653906721?lang=en

This flavour combo was all over TikTok, so of course, I had to try it, and I am obsessed. Yes, it may sound weird, but honestly, trying something new doesn’t hurt. The way that I like to do it is to order the Guss Dam Good Maine Rocky Coast delivered to my home. Then I drizzle high-quality extra virgin olive oil and get Maldon Sea Salt Flakes (or any good sea salt will do). The taste of this combo is absolutely wonderful. The salt brings out the vanilla, yet the olive oil gives this subtle, rich, grassy flavour. Honestly, everyone should give this a try once in their lives. Even Dua Lipa endorses it. – T.C., Content Writer

Yesterday’s Tomorrow by Jacob

When I saw this new campaign by the Thai brand Jacob, it instantly brought me back to my high school days. The Jacob bag was an item every Thai school kid must have since we needed to carry briefcases to school. So seeing this relaunch into something more modern and colourful is very nostalgic because back then if you had a Jacob bag, you were instantly a cool kid. The brand has been around for 84 years, and I haven’t seen them do anything in a long time, so it’s really cool that they redesigned an item that was so iconic. – A.A., Managing Editor

‘Anyone but You’

It’s a cool rom-com film produced by Sony Pictures, where you can instantly guess the ending without any thinking. In a world where people compete for insane production and CGI, B-grade movies like Anyone but You randomly popping up just help the viewers relieve stress and emotions. For me, the simplicity of this is what many people probably miss. It feels like an early 2000s rom-com since it focuses on the chemistry between Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell. And despite the shallow plot, it can put a smile on your face and lighten up your mood within that hour and a half. – P.T., Senior Writer

The former publishing house Watana Panich–not to be confused with the 100-year-old braised beef in Ekkamai–has found its second life as an art space. From now until 11 February, Bangkok Kunsthalle is housing Nine Plus Five Works from the French filmmaker and artist Michel Auder.

Bangkok folks are blessed with another creative space where they can pretend to wear their over-analytical lens while appreciating the arts. The space in question is Bangkok Kunsthalle (which, according to our editor who happens to be German, roughly translated to ‘Bangkok art hall’).

The project is the brainchild of Marisa Chiaravanont, who’s behind several creative campaigns like the Chef Care Foundation that makes Jay Fai and Shin Ramyun’s collaborations happen–you can read our verdict here

Boasting an extensive space, Bangkok Kunsthalle is expected to house several artworks all year round. Its inaugural exhibition sees the works of French filmmaker and artist Michel Auder who captures the ubiquitous sceneries of Bangkok lives–think his ‘Yaowarat,’ featuring the spontaneous fluidity of Yaowarat’s street life, and ‘Flowers of Thailand’, an interplay of colours and forms presented in looping, unsynchronised sequences.

What is the ‘fear food’ challenge on TikTok, and what is it doing for eating disorders? https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/what-is-fear-food-challenge-tik-tok-eating-disorders-about/ Sun, 07 Jan 2024 10:35:58 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1907601 what is fear food challenge

Aimed at those with eating disorders, a new TikTok challenge called the ‘fear food’ challenge is taking over the social media platform. But what is the fear food challenge all about?

A Fear Food challenge isn’t just an eating competition. The challenge is aimed at people struggling with eating disorders and encourages them to confront their fears by eating the foods they dread most. Proponents of these challenges claim that they can help the participant recover from their phobia while promoting a healthier relationship with food among viewers.

What is the ‘fear food’ challenge on TikTok, and what is it doing for eating disorders?

An unusual type of video content has recently emerged on TikTok. Internet users are taking to their smartphones and filming themselves eating… their “fear food.” But unlike the wacky food challenges we’re used to seeing, this challenge isn’t for everyone. In fact, this challenge, dubbed the “Fear Food Challenge,” is specifically designed to help people struggling with eating disorders.

In these videos, the individual (usually a young woman) who is recovering from an eating disorder puts their courage to the test by devouring the foods they dread most in front of the camera. These are often high-calorie dishes such as cheeseburgers, tacos or chocolate bars. One participant, for example, goes to a food court to enjoy a hot dog and accompanies her video with the message: “Never give up on yourself. Recovery is possible. And worth it.” Viewers’ comments overflow with support, highlighting the bravery of these individuals. In other videos, young women draw lots, using small pieces of paper, to see which dreaded food they’re going to eat in front of the camera. On TikTok, the hashtag #Fearfoodchallenge has accumulated over 470 million views.

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa are often accompanied by high levels of anxiety about certain foods, triggering negative thoughts. Sufferers may fear that food will lead to weight gain, or that it will break strict rules they have set themselves, such as excluding certain carbohydrates or fats. The “Fear Food Challenge” thus offers an approach to overcoming these food fears and re-establishing a healthier relationship with food.

For some people this kind of challenge can be a step in a recovery process of healing from an eating disorder, as Dr. Jason Nagata, an eating disorder specialist at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in San Francisco explains to Mashable. He points out that people in recovery or treatment experience a real, visceral fear of these foods. A crucial step in their recovery is being able to eat a variety of foods, including those that were once a source of anxiety.

“The first time you face down one of these fear foods, I think your best chance of success is to do it with a professionally-licensed provider who is trained to support you,” notes the specialist, who also warns of the potential risks of the challenge, including content that is triggering for some, derogatory comments or harassment that some participants may experience as well as misinformation about eating disorders.

A lot of things can happen in a year. For 2024, these are the events that will happen in Thailand and around the world, and some that we’re manifesting.

2023 had not been the best year we could have hoped for. Wars raged on, earthquakes hit the middle east, and Bebe Rexha released new music. But good things also emerged from all the chaos. It was a great year for talent to shine in the entertainment industry. Technological advances, activism efforts, and leaps in the world of healthcare — all in one year.

Here’s to 2024 being a year we never forget, for the right reasons. Here are some things that are going to happen, and some that will require some thoughts and nondenominational prayers.

It’s already confirmed that R&B icon Usher will be headlining the Super Bowl 2024. Many say he’s quite an unconventional choice to headline, but no one can deny his impact on the industry. We know his hits, we can sing them, and we know that he will surely light up the stage. Yes, like a dynamite.

Thailand could achieve marriage equality this year

Just a couple weeks ago, the parliament voted in favour of all four drafts of the marriage equality bills. Of course, the bills will have to go through rounds of debate before they can be approved and signed, ready to be implemented. This could mean that Thailand may achieve marriage equality as soon as 2024.

Fashion has a rich, fascinating history, and we’re looking back on it under Met Gala’s theme for 2024. They aim to bring out over 200 costumes and accessories from the institute’s permanent collection, with “iconography related to nature, which will serve as a metaphor for the fragility and ephemerality of fashion,” as stated on the Met website. Expect exquisite designs from fashion houses old and new, as well as men in black suits as usual.

Drag Race Thailand finally returns for third season

While no dates are confirmed yet, it’s official that drag extraordinaire Pangina Heals will be one of the hosts, although there is no news from Art Arya if she’ll be joining the judges’ panel. 20th anniversary of some of the most iconic chick flicks ever made (Mean Girls, White Chicks, 50 First Dates, and more)

People often associate the golden age of cinema with the late 20s to 60s. All we’re saying is that Alfred Hitchcock couldn’t make The Notebook, and Billy Wilder couldn’t create 13 Going on 30. As we dive into our nostalgia and lament our ages, let us go back and rewatch these classics — it’s these movies that made our simpler times filled with joy and a lot of dialogue to quote. Together, we could still make fetch happen.

The 10 most popular emojis this year https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/the-most-popular-emojis-this-year-2023/ Sat, 30 Dec 2023 06:00:58 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1906987 most popular emojis 2023

Have you been using the laughing emoji a lot this year? You’re not one of the only ones. Analysis and social intelligence tool Meltwater has unveiled a list of the 10 most popular emojis in 2023.

Emojis, or emoticons, are an everyday feature of our private and public messages. And it seems that laughing emoticons were the most popular this year. Find out which emojis were the most used on social networks in 2023.

The 10 most popular emojis this year

A picture is worth a thousand words. And in 2023, emojis confirm it. Of the 3,782 Unicode-compliant emoticons as of September 2023, Meltwater, an analysis and social intelligence tool, has unveiled the 10 most-used emojis this year on 12 platforms, including Instagram and Twitter, between January 1 and November 30, 2023. The results show that humor seems to have been the strongest driving force for emoji use. At the top of the list is the “face with tears of joy,” or 😂, with 254 million mentions on social networks, often the most popular with Millennials. It is followed by the “loudly crying face,” 😭, with another 46 million mentions (208 million), a Gen Z favorite. Finally, the “rolling-on-the-floor laughing” emoji, or 🤣, takes third place with 128 million mentions.

Note that, unlike the two others, the “loudly crying face” can be used to express both sadness and exhaustion, as well as joy and crying with laughter.

While the most popular emojis may vary from year to year, the ranking shows a massive use of emoticons linked to love and passion, with the red heart in fourth place in the top 10 raking, fire in fifth. The “smiling face with heart eyes” and the “smiling face with hearts” follow in seventh and eighth place, respectively. These emojis were particularly popular on Valentine’s Day, February 14, with the red heart leading the way.

Flaming emoji

Meltwater points to a surge in use of the fire emoticon on October 26, propelling it to third place at the time, which was apparently due to a Bitcoin spam, copied and pasted onto X (formerly Twitter) “probably by bots.” Still, the fire emoji has also taken hold on Pinterest, Twitch and Instagram. On Twitter, Reddit and Facebook, the “face with tears of joy” emoticon was the most popular.

Often used to highlight passion for or interest in a particular subject, Meltwater points out that the most used emojis on Pinterest — the red heart ❤️, sparkles ✨, smiling face with heart eyes 😍 and fire 🔥 — were associated with phrases like “You’ll love this” and “I love this idea!”

In the USA, the “face with tears of joy” emoji leads the way as the most popular, as it does in the UK and Nigeria, while the “loudly crying face” has taken hold in South Africa and the red heart has conquered India.

The 10 most popular emojis of 2023

1) 😂 Face with tears of joy
2) 😭 Loudly crying face
3) 🤣 Rolling on the floor laughing
4) ❤️ Red heart
5) 🔥 Fire
6) 🙏 Folded hands
7) 😍 Smiling face with heart eyes
8) 🥰 Smiling face with hearts
9) ✨ Sparkles
10) 😊 Smiling face with smiling eyes

A lot of things happened this year. Soho House opened in Bangkok, and we shared that on social media while taking a bite out of our THB 60 krapow kai. Barbenheimer really barbenheimered everywhere across the world. And remember Matty Healy being relevant for a hot minute? That was also this year. However the year might have gone, the one thing that had always persevere is the abundance of pollution in Bangkok. Let’s recap all of those precious moments with the format we love and adore most: memes.

It’s the most wonderful month of the year, and as the weather grows as cold as an Asian mum’s parenting style, we have another roundup of memes for December 2023.

December has been quite an eventful month. People shared their Spotify Wrapped like it’s nothing we expected before, like of course Hannah and Kathryn are among the Top 1% of Taylor Swift listeners. Emsphere had also opened in Phrom Phong, perfect for those wanting new dining experiences and the ones who just adore sitting in traffic for at least half an hour before passing through Sukhumvit. All of those and more, encapsulated in the format that holds our attention the longest: memes.

Thailand says yes to draft marriage equality bills https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/thailand-says-yes-to-draft-marriage-equality-bills/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 12:59:03 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1906255

Thailand’s draft four marriage equality bills received a big thumbs up, with 360 votes in favor, 10 against, and 1 no vote–a promising step towards equality. This may be a small start, but it represents a significant step towards equality as the LGBTQA+ community will finally be recognized as equal.

Thailand marriage equality bill

Thailand’s marriage equality bills received green light from the Parliament

Thailand has received an early Christmas gift this year as the parliament has voted in favor of all drafts for marriage equality bills, including the newly drafted one approved by the cabinet on 19 Dec

Unlike its last year’s attempt, all four drafts have been met with an overwhelming support from both government and oppositions with 360 votes in favor, 10 against, and 1 abstention. If one of these drafts were to pass, this could mean that Thailand will become the third places in Asia to recognise the same-sex marriage following Taiwan and Nepal.

Like any other drafts, the bills must undergo several rounds of debate in Parliament before they can be approved. Once they are completed and signed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, the bills will become law.

This may be a small start, but this represents a significant step towards equality.

Hong Kong’s newly-revamped Temple Street night market is now open https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/hong-kong-temple-street-night-market-events-november-details/ Thu, 21 Dec 2023 07:00:31 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1905908

Hong Kong’s Temple Street just got a facelift and is now officially open to visitors. The famous street already has a reputation for various traditional performances, local snacks, and food.

Secretary for Culture, Sports, and Tourism, Kevin Yeung said they hope to mimic the night market held at the Wan Chai harbourfront. The revamped night market hopes to showcase the rich diversity of cultures that Hong Kong has to offer. At the moment, the night market will operate from 2 pm to 11 pm daily for about six months.

Bringing new life to Hong Kong’s Temple Street

There are 22 speciality food stalls and 10 mobile snack stalls along the Temple Street market that are available for visitors to enjoy. They range from dim sum to Hong Kong-style snacks and more.

In addition to local cuisine, visitors can also snack on Southeast Asian food. Plus, there are also illuminated art installations, artworks, and wall projections available at night.

New festive campaign launches in Hong Kong

As of September 2023, about 23 million people have already visited Hong Kong. Yeung is not optimistic that the tourist numbers will return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of the year. However, he hopes that at least 30 million travellers will come to the city by December.

In addition to the planned events and night market at Temple Street, the government announced the return of large-scale events in Hong Kong. One of the most anticipated ones is the New Year countdown on New Year’s Eve. There will be a massive fireworks show to welcome 2024. Similarly, the Lunar New Year fireworks show will also return in the coming year.

Here’s your ultimate guide to EMSPHERE https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/asia/guide-to-emsphere-phrom-phong/ Fri, 15 Dec 2023 21:20:16 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1905247 EMSPHERE

Bangkok may already be teeming with malls–something which we’re sure Bangkok folks will never experience a shortage of–and the latest addition to the city is the EMSPHERE, the youngest sibling of Phrom Phong’s EM duo (Emporium and EmQuartier).

Apart from the additional traffic it may bring to the hood, we have to admit that it is a game changer of its own–think 86 food and drink venues, Sukhumvit’s first IKEA, luxurious car model showrooms, and its future addition ‘Sky Beach Club’ all gathered in one place. Below, find our ultimate guide to the new EMSPHERE.

Your ultimate guide to EMSPHERE

Food and Drinks

Boasting its concept of “the Sleepless Gastronomic Destination,” the new luxury mall is luring all foodies with its incredibly massive list of restaurants, cafes, and even famous street food vendors that the brains behind the mall managed to gather under the same roof.

No, we won’t be covering all of those spots alphabetically–our website might crash right after we press the ‘publish’ button–but here are some of the spots you might want to give a try the next time you’re there.

Montagne

For a true ice cream delicacy, head to Montangue, Rama III’s French artisanal ice cream shop. Here, Bhupar “Poon” Choonharas, a protégé of French ice cream master Emmanuel Ryon, who received the Meilleur Ouvrier de France title for ice cream making in 2000, whips up bold and fun ice cream flavors.

Oh My Godmother

The latest addition to Iberry Group’s culinary empire sees a blend of Korean, Italian, and French savoury and sweet offerings.  Like their previous establishment Fran’s, chef Chalee Kader of 1-Star Michelin restaurant Wana Yook helps oversee the menu here.

Brassica Doughnuts

Any self-respecting donut lover would know this donut shop for its donut sandwich stuffed with jiggling leche flan. Originally opened in Nanglinchee, the place has reopened in Ekkamai Soi 12. With its new branch at the EMSPHERE, the venue has churned out its new exclusive menu–think the ‘Fried Chicken Mentaiko SANdougnuts’ (THB195) featuring chef Cong Wen’s famous fried chicken and mentaiko mayo stuffed inside the crispy donut sandwich.

The Matcha Tokyo

Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, this matcha specialist serves modern tea offerings in ceremonial style–think of the staff wearing traditional kimono dresses while pouring hot water from hishaku (the prolonged bamboo ladle) and other classic tea utensils.

Bjoux De Beurre Echire

After opening its first cafe in Sukhumvit Soi 63, the high-end French butter brand Echiré has introduced its Bijoux De Beurre Echiré to Phrom Phong, boasting velvety butter with a hint of oak barrel from its traditional methods. The highlight is the Croissant Excellence d’ Echiré, a croissant with a buttery aroma, which, when paired with Valrhona’s hot chocolate, yields a taste like no other.

Bread Street Kitchen and Bar

Bread Street Kitchen & Bar

Gordon Ramsay’s sophisticated yet approachable all-day dining spot promises the British chef’s iconic dishes–think beef Wellington and the classic fish and chips. The venue will open its door this 20 December, so stay tuned.

Street Pizza

Street Pizza

This hip brand from Gordon Ramsay is all about breaking the pizza rules and delivering only the finest ingredients in every bite, whether you’re a fan of the classic Margherita or craving something more adventurous like the Corn and Chorizo.

Zao Zen by Zao

The brain behind Ekkamai’s Isan specialist Zao is bringing a variety of Isan noodles to the EMSPHERE. Those who frequent ramen noodle spots and Italian restaurants in Bangkok would know the hype around freshmade noodles. But have you heard of a place that serves khanom jeen (rice noodles) fresh from the machine? Zao Zen does it, and it does so very well. The place also features hua kai oak (a plumb clot of rice noodle whose appearance resembles a chicken head). We may be wrong but we haven’t seen other places that serve this type of rice noodle. We also loved the pla yon (freshwater fish caught from Ubon Ratchathani) grilled to perfection, promising a plumb fresh that took us no effort to rip off from the bones.

Panetti

Image Credit: Panetti Pizza / Instagram.

The brains behind Peppina, one of Bangkok’s most popular pizza spots, Panetti is known for their artisanal pizzas featuring locally-sourced ingredients. They offer a wide array of pizzas, but one must-try is the “Don’t Tell Paolo,” priced at THB 490. This pizza, a nod to the controversial internet debate about pineapple on pizza, features roasted organic pineapple, fior di latte, pistachio mortadella, and tomato purée.

Bianca

The team behind the Asian fusion grill house LAVA Asian has opened its Italian-focused restaurant spin-off, showcasing their wood-fired pizza oven and classic dishes. Try their Truffle Pasta e Basta (THB 690), fresh mafaldine pasta with creamy truffle sauce, parmesan, and roasted mushrooms topped with fresh truffle, or go for 72-hour fermented sourdough pizza starting at THB390 for their basic Margherita.

Rongklannuar

Songwat’s popular braised beef spot has brought its juicy beef to the air-con mall. Here, you don’t have to get all sweaty for their tender beef chunks any more, but the queue is still as crowded as ever.

ThongSmith Hot Pot

If you love ThongSmith’s boat noodles, you’ll likely fall for their hotpot as well. Transforming their much-loved, all-spiced boat noodle broth into a hotpot, Thong Smith offers both individual and shared pots, perfect for large group gatherings.

IKEA

Taking up the whole space on the third floor of the newly opened lifestyle community mall, this youngest branch of the Swedish furniture store may not be as vast as its elder siblings in Bangna or Bangyai. Still, you get to have the first IKEA that you can easily access via the BTS, plus the photogenic Swedish cafe with an abundance of natural light.

Fashion

With the luxury mall comes the luxury fashion brands. Expect glittering high-end fashion houses like Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, Chanel, Celine and Dior. Some of the local brands we want to give the spotlight to also include the design studio Vinn Patararin, and the sustainable leather bag Pipatchara.

UOB LIVE

It isn’t about the fancy malls here. Dubbed as UOB Live, this state-of-the-art entertainment hub can accommodate up to 6,000 patrons, which caters to every definition of live entertainment–think concerts, sport events, and more. Like its name suggests, UOB card holders are blessed with early access once it’s open. The venue is gearing up to open its door by the first quarter of 2024.

EM Yard

Looking for a new gathering space? Head to the open green area on the G floor, where you can bring your four-pawed friends to enjoy the breezy weather—if Bangkok’s weather is kind enough, of course. Here, at the EM Yard, the space accommodates a variety of events—think art exhibitions, food and drink markets, and more.

Luxurious Car Models

Motorheads are spoiled with choices–think the Italian luxury carmaker Lamborghini, the British carmaker Lotusthe luxury automaker Bentley, and more.

Chef Ton and Chef Vicky Cheng to open ‘EA Chef’s Table’ at Sathorn’s Empire rooftop https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/ea-chefs-table-chef-ton-vicky-cheng-the-empire/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 10:19:37 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1905148 ea chefs table empire sathorn chef ton vicky cheng

Exciting news for fine dining enthusiasts have arrived just in time for Christmas. Earlier today, real estate group Asset World Corporation (AWC) announced its partnership with two of Asia’s most acclaimed chefs, Chef Thitid ‘Ton’ Tassanakajohn and Chef Vicky Cheng, to launch the EA Chef’s Table on the 56th floor of The Empire in Sathorn. The new venture will be accompanied by EA Gallery (%Arabica, qraft, and Onggi), as well as Nobu Bangkok on the top floor.

Sathorn’s The Empire is seeing a real revamp in recent months, with the opening of many new dining outlets causing a stir not just amongst its nearby office dwellers, but by the general foodie community of Bangkok, too. Set to take this buzz to new heights, quite literally, the announcement of fine dining experiences at The Empire’s ‘EA’ space will surely add to the excitement.

Chef Ton and Chef Vicky Cheng to transform Sathorn’s The Empire rooftop with ‘EA Chef’s Table’

The newly-announced ‘EA Rooftop’ will take over the 55-58th floor of The Empire, aiming to present a “global lifestyle culinary experience.” The EA Rooftop will be set over more than 8200sqm, including 2500sqm of outdoor rooftop space, marking it as one of the world’s largest food and beverage destinations, right in the heart of Bangkok’s business district.

EA Gallery and Nobu Bangkok

The 55th floor will be known as the ‘EA Gallery,’ with an %Arabica coffee store, qraft oriental brunch and bakery, Korean eatery Onggi, and a “unique speakeasy bar.”

The 57-58th floors will see the partnership between AWC and Nobu Hospitality for Nobu Bangkok. It will serve as the world’s highest and largest Nobu outlet, as well as the first and only one in Thailand. Despite it’s location in Sathorn, diners will still be able to enjoy views of the Chao Phraya River, given its unique location at the very top of The Empire.

EA Chef’s Table

In between EA Gallery and Nobu Bangkok, lies ‘EA Chef’s Table’ on the 56th floor. This venue will be Thailand’s first Thai rooftop restaurant, and the highest Chinese restaurant created by the chefs of acclaimed Michelin-starred restaurants.

Chef Ton, celebrity and chef-owner of the Michelin-starred Le Du and Nusara (ranked numbers one and three on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023, respectively), Chef Ton will be at the helms for the Thai restaurant here. Embracing “the pinnacle of Thai cuisine,” diners are set for an incredibly elevated Thai dining experience. Drawing inspiration from the Chao Phraya River, the restaurant will serve “river-infused cuisine” amidst outdoor “floating” seating, an outdoor grill show-kitchen, and a cocktail bar.

Meanwhile, Chef Vicky Cheng of Hong’s renowned VEA and Wing restaurants will bring a concept of “redefined Chinese tradition” to Thailand’s highest Chinese restaurant on the same floor. Here, the restaurant will feature a signature tea bar, private dining rooms, and “dramatic views” of the Bangkok city skyline. Renowned for merging rich culinary heritage with modern techniques, the chef notes, “I am profoundly connected to Thailand since childhood…The prospect of opening my first restaurant outside Hong Kong here in Bangkok fills me with great honour and overwhelming gladness.”

Whilst further details on the dining destination are yet to be unveiled, EA Chef’s Table is already noted to be a place for “food lovers, gourmets, chef admirers, and discerning tourists.”

At the time of writing, %Arabica at EA Gallery is already in operation. The remaining stores at EA Gallery will open at the beginning of 2024.

LSA Opinion: How to survive your office Christmas party with dignity https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/whats-on/news-whats-on/how-to-survive-office-christmas-party-tips-opinion/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 08:51:35 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1905139 christmas office party tips

It’s the most wonderful time for day-drinking with your boss, and hopefully not regretting it the day after. With our own office Christmas party fast approaching, the Lifestyle Asia team gathers far away from the mistletoe to discuss: how do you survive your company holiday party with style and grace?

In the calendar of any corporate cool cat, the HR department, and your CEO, there are few things as major as the office Christmas party. Hard-earned budgets are dedicated to this. Bottles of booze are transported across town for this. And somebody in sales or marketing spent weeks negotiating a deal on the venue for this. Truly, a lot more goes into the company Christmas party than you might think.

Nevertheless, office Christmas parties can be confusing. On the one hand, it’s an open bar and free food, and on the other hand, you’re on a dance floor with the person who will be signing off on your annual bonus. You’re with people you (hopefully) know and see every day, but you’re also (probably) not truly close friends with them. To groove or not to groove? To drink or not to drink? And is it a time for telling your colleagues what you really think about them?

The answer to the latter question should be obvious (no), but the others can be a tough call. What’s appropriate at a party with your superiors? How much ‘fun’ can you really have? And how damaging is it to your reputation if you don’t attend?

Based on our very own experience, the Lifestyle Asia team has a few key pointers on how to maintain clout amongst your colleagues, and how to keep your career in tact even after your Christmas party. Consider your office party etiquette class in session — and don’t take it too seriously. One of us was dancing in the rain at the last one.

The most important thing is to attend

These things can be strategic, and your central strategy should be about being present. Whilst I loved the viral story in The New Yorker about “the right not to be fun at work,” I do believe there is room for work-appropriate fun at your company Christmas party. Have an open mind, and treat it like a light-hearted extension of your work day. Chat to other departments (when else do you get the chance?), and remember that it’s a party. It’s good to have some fun — just make sure it’s the kind of fun you’d be okay seeing on your company newsletter the next day.
—LG, Creative Content Director

Be fun until you get mad

Everyone’s supposed to show their ‘fun’ side rather than their boring corporate side. So, keep drinking. When you reach the point where you feel the urge to scream at your boss, leave. That way you’ll appear fun without getting yourself fired.
—PC, Content Writer

Stick to your buds and make sure management sees you

Find your work buds immediately and then find a corner/table for you. Have someone scout the food and drinks so you know where to go and you can avoid crowds. Make sure you say hi to the important people so they know you’re there. If you want to leave early, leave when the music is loud and the drinks are flowing.
—ES, Senior Writer

Drink until you forget

Okay, so the trick is that a Christmas party would have different spirits, right? So grab a rum and coke, finish it, then get a gin and tonic, then a bottle of beer and a glass of wine. Play your cards correctly and you won’t even remember the details of the party by 8pm.
—KV, Content Writer

Drink within your limits

Get drunk, but know your limit. For those who don’t drink, stick with your office bestie.
—TC, Content Writer

Wear a facial mask so people can’t see your real facial expression

With PM2.5 returning, there’s no better excuse to wear a facial mask during your company Christmas party. It’s the time when you will normally be forced to put up with colleagues you don’t like, so better hide that meh face underneath that mask.

A Secret Santa gift guide for any kind of colleague https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/tech/gear/budget-friendly-secret-santa-gift-guide-for-any-kind-of-colleague/ Thu, 14 Dec 2023 00:00:04 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1905029 budget friendly secret santa work colleagues office

’Tis the season for awkwardly pulling a name out of a hat at your company Christmas party, and being assigned the Secret Santa for a colleague you’ve never even heard of. For all these troubles and more, read on for our office Secret Santa gift guide, all under THB 500.

Secret Santa always sounds like a good idea in theory. You put a bunch of names into a hat, and every participant draws a name before being assigned the “Secret Santa” for that person that year. Days and weeks then go by as the Secret Santa tries to figure out what the Secret Santee would enjoy, before the big day comes around and the gift exchange is publicly performed. Laughter, cheer, and applause ensue, and everybody goes back with a unique, often humorous present.

Whilst it is already a daunting experience for those who don’t have performance anxiety, the whole shebang is heightened even more when the activity is brought into the office. For many years now, under the approving nods of the HR department, management teams across the globe have brought Secret Santa to the workplace, forcing colleagues to get gifts for one another, as if the gift of hours in the office together wasn’t enough.

Ah, festive spirit.

Jokes aside, engaging in Secret Santa activities with your colleagues can be nerve-wracking. How well do you really know them? How far are you willing to go? What feels appropriate? If you’re looking for a little inspiration, we’ve put together a few Secret Santa gift ideas, all under a friendly budget of THB 500, inspired by our own team. Most popular employee of the year award? Consider yourself nominated.

A Secret Santa gift guide for any kind of colleague

Ergonomic feet support pillow, THB 225

We spend so many hours of our lives at work, and for many this means being crouched over a laptop or seated in back-breaking positions at a desk. Show your work wife (or hubby) that you care, by getting them something for their office syndrome. Whilst a supportive chair, keyboard, and mouse is quite common, surprise your business bestie with ergonomic feet support to complete their office comforts. This way they’ll be able to stay at the company longer, and continue to share your (work-related) pains.

Face ice roller, THB 27/piece

This is a really budget-friendly Secret Santa gift, and is incredibly useful, too. For the colleague that does his or her greatest work at night time, gift them this face ice roller to help them feel refreshed after they snooze their morning alarm for the nth time. Easy to use, all they have to do is refill the water on this beauty tool and keep it in the freezer. Come morning, they ‘roll’ it all over their face to wake up the skin (and the brain, too). Supermodels and celebrities use this technique. They’ll thank you. Get a set of three for best gifting.

H&M warm slippers, THB 250

This colleague likes to walk up and down the office with a nose in everyone’s business and a bit of banter with every department. Since they’re always out and about, get them some comfortable slippers to make their hourly trips to the water cooler more comfortable. They’ll appreciate these plush slippers that are not only extremely cosy, but quite fashionable, too. Perfect for sneaking up behind you when you’re on the phone. Ideal for finding all the 411.

Mug warmer, THB 358

Lukewarm coffee is a crime, and it needs to be stopped, one mug at a time. The IT guy is often nowhere to be found, so his coffee is constantly losing heat. This clever mug warmer will fix that. Not only will this tech-savvy employee enjoy the workings of this smart device, but they’ll finally get to properly enjoy a hot beverage after a day of fixing the printer, finding the projector remote, and explaining that he does in fact not know why your computer won’t connect to the server. Cheers!

Starbucks Gift Card, THB 300

Maybe this person only just joined your company recently. Maybe your departments never interact. Whatever the reason, if you want to get to know this colleague better, a fine Secret Santa gift is a coffeeshop gift card. You can top it up with as much or as little budget as you want, and if you opt for the Starbucks card, you can even find motivating work-related designs. If you’re lucky, this colleague may ask you to get coffee with them. If you’re unlucky, there’s always next year.

‘Surrounded by Idiots’ by Thomas Erikson, THB 333

So you pulled a name from a hat and got the worst name possible. It was bound to happen. For the colleague that you don’t really like, bring light to an awkward situation and gift them this bestselling novel. ‘Surrounded by Idiots’ may sound like it’s very on the nose, but Erikson’s book is actually about embracing and understanding the people around you. With examples ranging from your life partner to your most loathed colleague, the book aims to encourage greater communication and understanding to handle conflict and improve dynamics more efficiently. Ahem.

Table mirror, THB 499

There’s nothing quite as awkward as being Secret Santa to somebody you don’t really know. You can’t play off their interests. You don’t know what they like. Thereby, getting them something useful for their daily office life can be a good starting point. Whilst ordinary stationery may seem a bit mundane, consider getting a small mirror they can place on their desk. This way they’ll always be able to check their teeth before any big presentation, or re-apply any makeup before going out to meet clients. They’ll appreciate this. They may even strategically use the mirror to see who is approaching behind them, and even find you staring back at them, finally knowing who they are.

Uniqlo x JW Anderson socks, THB 130/pair

Whilst socks are known as a stereotypically ‘boring’ gift, these fashionable foot warmers have been getting a PR revamp in the last years, and stylish socks with unique motifs have become a marker of the well-dressed man or woman. Add a quirky detail to the everyday look of the office fashionista, and gift them these Uniqlo x JW Anderson socks. Not only are they cool conversation starters, they’re fitted with Uniqlo’s heat tech, too. The freezing cold air conditioning in your office will have nothing on them.

Mini fridge, THB 447

Let’s face it. Everybody dreads this one. How do you impress your boss? And how do you do it on a budget? We recommend going down the playful route, especially if you’re not looking to splurge. ‘World’s Best Boss’ mugs and candles never fail, but if you want to get creative, how about a mini fridge? Whether they use it for iced coffee, skincare, or even a cold beer, everyone has a use for a mini fridge. Anything to make sure your boss keeps a cool head at work. Major win.
