Why more Thais are choosing single life over marriage

Recent reports reveal that now more than ever, Thai citizens prefer a single life over getting married.

According to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), an increasing number of Thais are opting to remain single. This trend is partly attributed to the ‘SINK’ concept – Single Income, No Kids.

Unmarried individuals often work longer hours than their married counterparts, resulting in fewer opportunities to find a partner, as noted by the NESDC.

The NESDC, Thailand’s national economic planning agency, reported that 40.5% of people of reproductive age have no desire to marry, up from 35.7% in 2017. The Ministry of Public Health defines reproductive age as 15-49 years. This increase comes despite government efforts to encourage higher birth rates in an ageing society.

Thailand’s efforts to boost birth rates through government incentives fall short compared to other countries that offer substantial financial support fo families with children. In March 2024, the Thai government announced plans to address this issue, expressing concerns that a low birth rate and ageing population could shrink the workforce, deter investment, and reduce the overall population.

Birth rates in Thailand have significantly declined, dropping from 44 per 1,000 people in 1960 to just 10 per 1,000 people in 2023, according to the World Bank as well as Thai agencies. Last year, the Land of Smiles officially became an aged society, with 20% of the nation’s population aged 60 or older, as reported by the Thailand Development Research Institute.

In response, the NESDC suggests creating matchmaking platforms to help singles connect. Additionally, the agency recommends that both state and private sectors promote a better work-life balance and encourage activities that facilitate social interaction.
