Week in Geek: Japan’s ‘real-life’ Gundam finally retires

The real-life Gundam in Yokohama is finally out of commission. This is the week in geek.

Legendary director Christopher Nolan is no longer just going to be Christopher Nolan. A quadriplegic was able to play Civilization 6 all night thanks to new assistive tech. There’s an upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie and it seems like it will be Depp-less. Finally, the famous Gundam in Yokohama has finally said goodbye.

The life-size Gundam that was able to move and pose has finally said goodbye. The 18-metre model, which already extended its stay twice due to public demand, was sent off by fans last week amid cheering and fireworks. The replica was first launched back in December 2020 to commemorate the TV series’ 20th anniversary.

The British director is set to receive a knighthood alongside his producing partner and wife, Emma Thomas, who will receive a damehood. The list, announced last Thursday by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, includes figures from the tech industry like Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis and other known names in the entertainment industry like Ted Sarandos, the Netflix co-CEO, who is set to receive an honourary CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire).

The first human Neuralink patient pulled a Civilization 6 all-nighter

After Elon Musk announced that the first recipient of the Neuralink, Noland Arbaugh, was doing well, Arbaugh made good use of assistive tech by playing Civilization 6 all night. “It was like using the force on the curser, and I could get it to move wherever I wanted, just stare somewhere at the screen, and it would move where I wanted it to, which was such a wild experience,” Arbaugh explained as reported by Nerdist. The 29-year-old quadriplegic said the ability to play the game was “worth it”. Despite the glowing result, there are those who are still hesitant to praise Neuralink, especially since the Reuters report regarding animal testing.

It’s a brand new pirate’s life for everyone. The new Pirates of the Caribbean movie that’s in the works is going to be a reboot according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. In an interview with ComicBook.com, he said, “We’re gonna reboot ‘Pirates,’ so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.” This seemingly implies that Johnny Depp isn’t involved but only time will tell.
