Chutimon “Aokbab” Chuengcharoensukying makes history as first Thai actress to win an Emmy

Thai actress Chutimon “Aokbab” Chuengcharoensukying beat out three others to win Best Performance by an Actress at the International Emmy Awards.

Hunger was a hit when it was released back in April of 2023, telling the story of Aoy, a street food cook who is taken under the wing of an infamous and cruel chef. The film garnered an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.6 on IMDB. It was a hit with both critics and audiences alike and won a handful of awards.

But it seems like its awards run hasn’t ended because Chutimon “Aokbab” Chuengcharoensukying just won an Emmy for her portrayal of Aoy in Hunger.

The 52nd International Emmy Awards just concluded a mere few hours ago. It was hosted by Indian comedian Vir Das and was held in New York City. The 56 nominees came from 21 countries with Singapore and Thailand being the only two countries from Southeast Asia.

Aokbab Chuengcharoensukying was awarded “Best Performance by an Actress”. The Thai actress bested three other actresses in the category: Adriana Barazza from Mexico for her role in Where the Tracks End; Sara Giraudeau from France for Everything is Fine; and Jessica Hynes from the UK for There She Goes. She’s the sole Asian winner of this year’s International Emmy Awards though Drops of God, a French-American-Japanese series, won Best Drama Series. It’s also the first time an actress has ever won the award.

In her acceptance speech, Aokbab thanked the cast and crew and for being given the opportunity to play the role in the film. “Thank you so much; this means a lot to me. I would like to thank the Academy for giving me this recognition,” she said. In addition to the cast and crew, she also thanked the chefs saying ”Your support brought my character to life”.

Hunger also won the Best Feature Film at the 2023 Asian Academy Creative Awards in Singapore as well as Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Original Screenplay.
