All about ‘Babygirl’ star Harris Dickinson: His career, directorial venture and more

Harris Dickinson is all set to be the man of the hour, with Babygirl (2024) having accelerated what Beach Rats (2017) had set in motion.

Despite an acting career spanning less than a decade, Dickinson has an impressive filmography. From critically acclaimed independent movies like Scrapper (2023) to big, commercial hits like The Iron Claw (2023). Dickinson plays every role with such sensitivity and tenderness that every scene, every dialogue, every expression of his sets him apart from his contemporaries.

Especially after the premiere of suspenseful erotic film Babygirl at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, in August 2024, Harris Dickinson has become a much talked-about figure in Hollywood.

But who is he beyond all these characters he portrays? Which other movies and TV shows has he acted in? Do we have any details about his personal life and upcoming projects?

Get to know the answers to all these questions as we uncover the man behind the up-and-coming British actor.

Meet Harris Dickinson, Hollywood’s newest rising star

Early life and theatre background

Born on 24 June 1996 in East London, Harris Dickinson had humble beginnings. He is the son of a social worker and a hairdresser. A creative streak, however, was always there; as a boy, he would often shoot sketches and write scripts, dreaming about making movies. However, doubts about there being a place for someone with a working-class background like him in Hollywood were also present.

“I thought maybe I was foolish for choosing the arts or the entertainment industry, such a frivolous, unattainable thing. What on earth was I doing even trying to enter that?” he said in a New York Times interview

It is perhaps this humbleness and innocence that translates into his performances; this simplicity that adds a touch of himself and a humanness to his attitude toward his craft and every character he plays.

During his teenage years, he started getting involved with the Royal Marines Cadets, hoping to enlist. He probably would have (and we would have never found an actor like him) if it wasn’t for an acting teacher at Raw Academy in Walthamstow, London, who encouraged him to follow his passion and work on his performance.

This was all the push he needed. At 18, Dickinson landed a part in a play called Angels by actor and author Pauline McLynn, who is best known for her role in the British comedy-drama, Shameless (2004-2013). The play was performed at the National Theatre which led to Dickinson signing with an agent.

He also attended the Royal Academy Theatre school in London, the experience of which he described as “brilliant” in an Elle interview.

But even after finding an agent, paid acting work was scarce. Dickinson struggled through car commercials while trying to save enough money to go to Los Angeles to audition while working at Hollister.

Finally, after many trips to and from L.A., and some minor roles in TV shows, Dickinson landed his first film Beach Rats (2017).

And the rest, as you now know, is history.

Movies and TV shows of Harris Dickinson, including Babygirl

His brilliant career trajectory started with the drama film Beach Rats (2017), in which Harris Dickinson portrayed a Brooklyn teenager struggling with his sexuality. For this role, he was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead.

Following this tender portrayal, Dickinson acted in movies like County Lines (2019), Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019) and The King’s Man (2021).

In 2022, Dickinson acted in some of his most notable roles that propelled his career forward. The first one, Triangle of Sadness (2022) was a satirical black comedy which premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and won the Palme d’Or. Dickinson played Carl, a model who at first seems sympathetic but eventually turns out quite hopeless.

Where the Crawdads Sing (2022), is the second significant title, in which he co-starred with Daisy Edgar Jones. The coming-of-age mystery is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by American zoologist Delia Owens.

See How They Run (2022), a whodunnit mystery, co-starring Saoirse Ronan was also one of his most popular movies of the year. The same year he also got his first BAFTA nomination for the EE Rising Star Award for his role as Conrad Oxford in The King’s Man.

More recent film performances of Harris Dickinson include Scrapper (2023), the 2023 A24 sports-drama The Iron Claw with Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White and Holt McCallany and Babygirl (2024), opposite Nicole Kidman, which has catapulted him into the mainstream with fans endlessly thirsting over him on X (Twitter). The Halina Reijn thriller follows a powerful CEO (Kidman) who gets involved with a young intern (Dickinson), beginning an illicit affair.

Additionally, he also appeared in Steve McQueen’s World War II film Blitz (2024). It reunited him with his SHTR co-star, Ronan.

Dickinson’s first stint in front of the camera was in 2014, however, with a two-episode appearance in the TV series Some Girls in which he played Tonka. Following that, he got his first main role on TV with Trust (2018). And more recently, he appeared in the miniseries, A Murder at the End of the World (2023).

Future projects and directorial debut

Fascinated with telling stories on and off camera, Dickinson is prepared to make bigger waves with his directorial debut with the working title, Limousine Dreams.

According to the aforementioned New York Times interview, the film ‘follows a young drifter who tries to reassimilate into London society.’ Frank Dillane who played a 16-year-old Tom Riddle (aka young Lord Voldemort) in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009) is expected to star in the movie.

In terms of his on-camera projects, there are speculations that Dickinson will play the role of John Lennon in Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopic. In a report by Variety, when asked about the role, he ‘played coy’ before moving along the red carpet.

We can’t wait to see what more he has in store for us!

Besides movies, Dickinson is also in demand for brand collaborations. He is the brand ambassador of the luxury brand Prada. Along with that, he has also appeared in various Dior campaigns (he did get cast as a model in 2022’s Triangle of Sadness for a reason).

Additionally, he was also included in GQ Italia’s 2024 Men Of The Year list and posed as the second cover star for Dazed magazine’s 2024 The Drama Issue.

Harris Dickinson’s personal life, girlfriend and more

To keep his personal life private, Dickinson doesn’t post much about it on social media; so, little is known about his life away from the limelight.

However, according to Cosmopolitan, the actor is in a long-term relationship with English singer and songwriter, Rose Gray. The two have supposedly been dating since 2021 and have frequently been spotted attending events and parties together.

A great filmography with hits such as Babygirl, commitment to his partner and craft, and good looks — is there anything Harris Dickinson doesn’t have?

Well, we will certainly watch his career with great interest (insert Emperor Palpatine meme).
