‘The Tyrant’ k-drama: Release date, plot, cast, and more

A tale of a secret bioweapon handover will join Disney+’s slate of Korean titles. Here’s all about Kdrama The Tyrant, from cast to release date.

Over the past few years, Korean shows and movies have come to occupy a large amount of real estate on OTT platforms. This includes Disney Plus — which is home to highly-rated titles like Dr. Romantic, Snowdrop, and Rain or Shine. The popular streamer made it to the headlines for picking up Uncle Samsik — a historical series that marks veteran Parasite actor Song Kang-ho’s first television rodeo. It also backed the highly-anticipated Light Shop and the ongoing Wonderful World.

The latest addition to this list is an action spy-thriller Kdrama titled The Tyrant with a release date sometime late this year. At the helm of affairs is director Park Hoon Jung who’s brought the likes of Cha Seung-won, Jo Yoon-su, Kim Seon-ho, and Kim Kang-woo to the team. According to numerous reports, the project was set to be a movie — switching gears to a longer, four-part format to better do justice to the characters and story. Here’s all about it.

The plot of The Tyrant Kdrama

After a secret South Korean government-backed project to enhance human abilities is discovered by the US intelligence agencies, things go awry. The latter asks the former to shut it all down and surrender any samples. However, just as the handover is about to happen, the bioweapon is stolen. Agents from both countries then embark on a dangerous mission to recover it before it falls into the hands of the wrong people.

Meet the cast of The Tyrant Kdrama

The action will be led by young actress Jo Yoon-su — of the True Beauty and Juvenile Justice fame. She will step into the shoes of a skilled engineer and infiltrator Chae Jagyeong — whose mission is to steal the last sample of the bio enhancing project from the Tyrant Program.

Meanwhile, actor Cha Seoung-won — who was last seen in Our Blues and Believer 2 — will play the role of former agent Lim Sang. The character’s task is to do away with any forces attached to the Tyrant Program.

The series also marks popular actor Kim Seon-ho’s return to television — with his last being the cult-classic 2021 romantic comedy Hometown Cha Cha Cha. He will essay the role of the mysterious Director Choi who leads the Tyrant Program.

Rounding out this stellar lineup is The Missing and The Taste Of Money actor Kim Kang-woo. He will portray the role of Paul — a member of an overseas intelligence agency that’s keen to eliminate the Tyrant Program wholly.
