The Night Agent season 2 ending explained: Major highlights and what happens in episode 10

What is Foxglove and who wants to use it?

Throughout The Night Agent season 2, Peter Sutherland has been working to prevent one threat — Foxglove. It was a covert US government programme to create antidotes for various lethal synthetic chemical weapons of the future. However, preparing for such unforeseen attacks meant the government had to make the poisons first. For this, scientists worked on a top-secret project to make the weapons so they could gauge what they would be up against.

The intense investigation takes Peter, Rose and Catherine through highly sensitive files and data leaks across Europe. The involvement of the Iranian ambassador to the UN and a French diplomat selling confidential information further complicates matters.

In episode 1, Peter and his night action partner Alice Leeds (played by Brittany Snow) were collecting the Foxglove breadcrumbs across Bangkok. But things went south when Alice was killed and data surfaced that blackened the name of America.

Turns out, the mastermind behind all of this is Viktor Bala (played by Dikran Tulaine), a dictator who had been convicted of war crimes by the Hague and was in prison. He was incarcerated for using the chemical KX, one of the most potent weapons under Foxglove on his own people. Viktor claimed the US had sold the information, but due to the lack of corroborated evidence, the UN wrote him off.

Now, with his son Tomás (played by Rob Heaps) leading his father’s terrorism cell, along with his cousin Markus (played by Michael Malarkey), Viktor envisages unleashing the deadly KX in the UN building to send a message and get retribution. Rose and one of the scientists who worked to create the formula are abducted by Tomás and Markus and forced to prepare a new batch. However, as Tomás realises the exact nature of what KX can do, he tries to stop Markus but fails and is killed with a tiny vial of the chemical for his disloyalty.

But for Markus, vengeance must be taken at all costs. The plan is that while the United Nations is dividing up Viktor’s territory, Markus would release KX and kill everyone at the UN meeting. In the nick of time Peter and Rose, along with Catherine, reach the UN to retrieve the KX canisters, saving thousands of lives across Manhattan.

Who is Jacob Monroe and how does he make Peter the villain?

The Night Agent season 2 ending explained article must delve into the character of Jacob Monroe (played by Louis Herthum). A highly connected international businessman and intelligence broker, Jacob remains unnamed until the last episode. He appears briefly but poignantly in the first episode in Bangkok and keeps a close watch on Peter and the night action’s whereabouts throughout the season.

When Peter and Catherine take in Jacob’s right-hand man and fixer Solomon Vega (played by Berto Colon), he urges Peter to speak to his boss. Jacob presents him with a new deal — retrieve Rose from Markus and get to the KX mobile lab by becoming his double agent and fetching an archived file from the UN Secretary General’s office. This made Peter a villain in the eyes of Catherine and Rose.

After much deliberation, the night agent breaks into the UN building to extract the file. The 10th episode reveals that the document Monroe got from Peter linked Presidential candidate Patrick Knox to the initial Foxglove project. Back then, Knox was the CIA director who spearheaded Foxglove and even sold data to Viktor Bala.

Hence, when Knox pulls out of the Presidential election race at the last minute, it only implies Monroe must have leaked the document. This guarantees rival candidate Hagan would sweep to power. Making Hagan the puppet US President ensures the power remains in the hands of Jacob Monroe who could easily influence him.

What happens to Noor?

Played by Arienne Mandi, Noor is a low-level employee at the Iranian mission to the UN determined to leverage her access to top-secret information into a better life for herself and her family. The way her story propelled the plot makes her a pivotal character in The Night Agent season 2 ending explained article.

In an attempt to bring her mother and brother to the US, she traded sensitive Iranian information with a CIA spy. However, when she helped Rose get the Iranian dissidents list from Ambassador Abbas’s (played by Navid Negahban) office, it made her an irrefutable character in the whole operation. Solomon supplied this list to Abbas.

Things take a turn when Peter fails to live up to their deal with Noor in extracting her family from Iran and her brother is killed. Peter keeps this a secret from Noor, but in the meanwhile, the head of security at the Iranian mission, Javad Rahman (played by Keon Alexander) gets suspicious and begins to track Noor.

He tells her of her brother’s death and uses her to get to Peter. In the end, although Noor is shattered, she helps Peter one last time to infiltrate the UN building while she escapes from Javad’s clutches. She even turns Abbas against Javad ensuring he would never trouble them again. Javad is arrested and Peter carries out Jacob’s task successfully.

In episode 10 of the Netflix series, Noor finally meets her mother and they are granted American citizenship, proceeding to settle in Illinois.

What happens in the 10th episode: Is Peter able to save Rose?

The Night Agent season 2 ending explained article is incomplete without details of the last episode, titled “Buyer’s Remorse”.

The episode begins with an evacuation and NYPD personnel taking over the UN building. Markus and his henchmen have placed KX canisters all over and it is a race against time before the spies can identify Markus and save the day. After a massive manhunt, Peter shoots Markus in Tomás’s girlfriend Sloane’s (played by Elise Kibler) hotel room.

Once the dust settles down, Peter takes Rose aside and tells her that he has decided to turn himself to Catherine and the Night Action for stealing UN documents and freeing a federal criminal. This would free him of Jacob Monroe’s hold over him.

He also made Rose promise that she would not come after him in times of danger in the future. A teary goodbye follows as the protagonists embrace, and Peter urges her to forget him, as he is incapable of protecting her in the future — setting her free and, in a way, saving her.

In The Night Agent season 2 ending, Peter is shown testifying to his deeds in jail which point towards his arrest. After weeks of being locked up, Catherine arrives and frees him. The two go for a walk in front of the White House where she informs him about Hagan’s Presidential race. She also explains that while his decisions helped him secure the Oval Office, the circumstances made him vulnerable to manipulations of intelligence brokers like Jacob Monroe. Catherine also reveals that she investigated Peter’s father but kept it a secret to not malign their relationship from the beginning.

Is Peter a double agent now?

So after all that he has done, is Peter Sutherland the new villain? The Night Agent season 2 ending explained article comes with one last twist in the tail. Catherine sets Peter up for a new mission, where she makes him a double agent for Jacob Monroe and his allies. She is certain that intel dealers would contact him since he is alive and she wants to use this against them to see how deep is Monroe’s relationship with Hagan.

It remains to be seen who will call and when.
