Alia Bhatt plays the role of Satya, a woman who has been intensely protective towards her brother ever since they were kids. Her brother Ankur (Vedang Raina) finds himself wrongfully imprisoned and on death row in a fictional authoritarian Southeast Asian country. He grew up under the protective shadow of his sister’s perpetual presence. Although he deeply loves her, he also harbours a sort of resentment thanks to Satya’s controlling nature.

At its heart, Jigra is about the fierce bond between the two siblings. Satya, who has always been the protector, faces her greatest challenge when her brother, Ankur, is wrongfully imprisoned in an island prison and placed on death row on charges of possessing illegal substances. He is innocent but is somehow convinced to confess to a crime he did not commit. Before Jigra movie’s ending, let’s take a look at what happens in the story.

What is the Jigra movie story all about?

As mentioned above the emotional core of the Jigra movie and its story is the bond between Satya and Ankur. Satya has always been wise beyond her years. When they were little, Satya and Ankur witnessed their father standing at the edge of their home’s balcony, about to end his life. While Satya realised what was happening, Ankur was too young to understand. And Satya shielded his eyes. This moment becomes the fulcrum of their plot and defines how their lives play out.

They begin a new life with their distant relatives and both turn out okay. When one day Ankur wants to go on a business trip with his slightly wayward cousin, Satya is apprehensive since the said cousin has a knack of falling in trouble. Yet, this is something her brother wants so she reluctantly gives her acquiescence — but not before warning him of any conceivable danger.

The business trip is to a Southeast Asian country where narcotics possession means a death sentence. The aim of the trip is successful and the two cousins finalise the deal, and to celebrate, they go out to party. Somebody slips Ankur’s cousin a small plastic bag of what looks like cocaine. They are stopped by cops for speeding and the police find the pouch. Incarcerated, they call back home for help. The family lawyer urges Ankur to give a false confession that it was he who originally possessed the bag. If he does not do so, the lawyer claims, his cousin will get the death penalty. After being reassured that he will be out of jail in a couple of months this is the only way to save his cousin, Ankur gives in. In court, he is stunned to be awarded the capital punishment by the judge.

Back in India, Satya has not been sitting idly. She takes a chartered flight to the place and after meeting her brother is assured by multiple lawyers that there is no way the death penalty can be overturned.

Exhausted both mentally and physically, Satya meets and befriends an Indian man called Bhatia (played by Manoj Pahwa). Similar to her, Bhatia also has a family member, a son, who is innocent and yet on death row. He goes to counselling sessions for people who are in the same situation — their loved one or relative or somebody else is innocent and is still on death row. They meet a man called Muthu (played by Rahul Ravindran). He used to be a local cop and once arrested a young man on the same charge and when he realised he was innocent, it was too late. Now he is guilt-ridden for not being able to do anything to save the man.

Albeit reluctant, Muthu agrees to join forces with Satya and Bhatia to concoct a plan to break the three young men from the prison. Muthu, being a retired police officer, has blueprints of the prison and they quickly spot a chink in the armour of an otherwise highly secure building. Meanwhile, Ankur is undergoing his own journey in prison. He has made new friends and together they have their own plan to break out into freedom which will involve drilling a tunnel, something like in Stephen King’s adaptation The Shawshank Redemption.

Satya and others’ carefully devised plan fails when she is visited by the police who inform her that her brother was one of the three prisoners who fled from the prison — which means their plan was successful — but they were eventually apprehended and one of them was killed. Thankfully, it is neither her brother nor Bhatia’s son. But this does mean they have to abandon their plan. Oh, and their death sentence is pushed ahead.

Satya doesn’t have the time. Finally, she decides that now that finesse does not work, she will have to resort to brute force. We earlier learned that Bhatia was once a gangster. He calls everyone he knows to help him one final time. Satya’s plan hinges on turning off the power of the prison which will disable all the security and doors. And then, Satya and Bhatia’s associates will storm the prison, even hoping that most of the guards have been incapacitated by the escaping inmates.

Muthu is vehemently against this. He intercepts Satya in the early stages of the mission. After a brutal brawl, Muthu is left severely injured and Satya abandons him. When it comes to the safety of her brother, she does not listen to her conscience.

Satya vs the prison guards: A thrilling finale

In the third act of the Jigra movie story, while Satya and others manage to cut the power off, the backup generators kick in. And by the time they manually turn the backup power off, Ankur might already be dead. Satya sends the explosive-laden trucks to hasten everything. They destroy the fences of the prison and the complex is all of a sudden it is dark everywhere. The prisoners escape and there is hullabaloo all around. Satya rallies the prisoners against the guards by shouting “Long live the revolution” in the local language. As she navigates her way to where the prisoners are executed, her thoughts go back to the childhood she and her brother shared. She John Wicks her way through and does reach Ankur in the nick of time and when they are later cornered by the guards, Bhatia arrives in a bullet-proof vehicle and rescues them.

The guards chase after them and Satya realises Bhatia got shot and will soon die. He decides to sacrifice himself so Satya, Ankur and his son can escape on a boat. If they reach Malaysian waters, they will be safe. The guards still give chase. When it looks like Satya will have to sacrifice herself for her brother, but then the guards are shot at by Malaysian coast guards and have to go back.

Finally, Satya can rest easy. Her brother is safe.

Jigra movie story ending and the major themes

Jigra movie story touches upon some very deep themes of how far one would go to protect their loved ones; hence, it is crucially concerned with how much one is willing to give up in order to hold a space of love. Satya comes out as a symbol of the fierce desire of the protective figure who is willing to cross across some boundary in a space of moral or legal matters. It is essentially the sacrifice and the kind of duty in the family lines and inner strength that shape Satya’s journey, leading her to face not only external threats but also her limits and vulnerabilities.

Jigra brief review

Here is a short Jigra review: Jigra has a fairly potent script that is all about sacrifice, family relationships, and dilemmas of right and wrong. The entire film is interesting enough to keep your attention even if it often feels overlong and overindulgent. The action is quite slick. It is nowhere near as good as, say, Kill, but it’s pretty solid.

Alia Bhatt’s performance was one sort point for me. It feels somewhat lacking. Satya’s vulnerability is nicely captured by her, but the ferocity required for her transformation is missing in a several key moments, making it emotionally flat. It appears at times that she is trying too hard.

One other is the character of Ankur, which is extremely underdeveloped. He remains vague in terms of motivation and background, makes it difficult to identify with his character. Raina, who was the highlight for me in The Archies, does his best but it’s not enough. This in turn means the a few well-written scenes do not feel as impactful. While Jigra does excel in its writing, performance and character issues prevent it from reaching its full potential.
