‘Elf’ and 13 other best Santa Claus movies for your Christmas watch list

‘Tis the time to light up the Christmas tree, clean out the chimney and sing a merry carol because the festive season is here, and we cannot wait for Santa Claus to come to town! The ultimate personification of the holiday spirit, Santa Claus has his own unique charm in the world of Christmas movies.

The familiar image of Santa Claus as a jolly old man originates from the Christmas tradition linked to Saint Nicholas, a Christian saint from the 4th century, who is commonly depicted wearing red bishop’s robes in the United States. He is interpreted as Father Christmas in European countries who resides at the North Pole with his wife Mrs Claus. Over time, the red-and-white-clad bearded old man bearing gifts has become a pop culture icon and appeared in innumerable movies, making the Christmas Eve movie-binging marathon a tradition.

It is worth noting, that while there is an entire galaxy of the best Christmas movies, not all of them are essentially Santa Claus movies. The latter is a sub-genre in which the Christmas story focuses on the character of Santa Claus, who is interpreted in various ways across different screens.

While in some Santa Claus movies, he is a sweet grandpa telling stories, in others, he is like a mischievous kid looking to have a good time — case in point The Christmas Chronicles (2018), The Santa Claus (1994) and A Christmas Story (1983). However, he leaves room for some sinister interpretations as well. It is hard to miss a bloody Father Christmas in Violent Night (2022) and one posing as a drunkard conman in Bad Santa (2003). From popular live-action titles to animated movies, good Santa films never go out of vogue.

So are you waiting to ring in the holiday spirit and spread Christmas cheer? Here’s an array of the best Santa Claus movies to watch as you snuggle with a cup of hot cocoa.

Does that mean children across half the world will miss out on their Christmas presents? Or will Kate and Teddy be able to revive the broken sleigh and help Santa deliver on time?

About the film: Here Russell’s Santa might seem like the classic bearded grandpa we are familiar with, but he’s got quite a fun vibe and even busts a myth or two — “I don’t go ho ho ho; that’s a myth,” he tells Kate.

Bad Santa (2003)

As their supposed foolproof plan stands on the verge of crumbling, a lonely 8-year-old kid (Kelly), somehow finds his way into Willie’s miserable life.

About the film: Not a regular sweet Christmas story, here, Santa is more of a Scrooge than the jolly old man we have grown to love. His haggard fake beard hangs lumpy and he is a skinny fellow with a drinking problem who is not in the mood to celebrate — things that uniquely make Bad Santa a must-watch. If you want to shift gears and watch something unlike a quintessential holiday story, this film is what you need.
