Wicked fans, get ready to return to the theatres as the second Wicked film is slated to release in the latter half of 2025. From its cast to the release date, the official title and information about its likely soundtrack, here are all the details that we know about Wicked 2.
Wicked, released on 22 November 2024, is based on the 2003 Broadway stage musical which, in turn, is inspired by the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the second part of the live-action film adaptation picks up where the first film left off.
After the outstanding track “Defying Gravity” and the cliffhanger ending of the first movie, the sequel would continue the story of the witches of Oz, Glinda (played by Ariana Grande), the Good Witch, and Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo), the Wicked Witch of the West. With new songs and more adventures, it is expected to become as big a hit as its predecessor.

For a long time, fans believed the second film would be called Wicked: Part 2. However, on 16 December 2024, the makers revealed the project is officially titled Wicked: For Good.
Fans of the Broadway musical will know that it is a nod to one of the second act’s most important songs, “For Good”. It chronicles Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship and how they’ve impacted each other for good.

Right from the beginning of production, Chu had announced that Wicked would be split into two movies. It was quite a bold move for a musical adaptation, but also a rewarding one. Wicked has soared to become the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all time with a massive opening record of around USD 114 million at the domestic box office, states The Hollywood Reporter.
Both parts were shot at the same time. Filming wrapped up in January 2024 after production faced a halt due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes.
Wicked: For Good cast and crew
Like the first movie, Wicked 2 will be led by Grande and Erivo as the two witches. Assuming the story follows the musical, Boq (played by Ethan Slater) will become the Tin Man and Fiyero (played by Jonathan Bailey) will become the Scarecrow by the end of the second movie.
Since the sequel is an adaptation of the musical’s second act, most of the cast members from the first film will reprise their roles: Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose and Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond. Adam James will also appear in his role as Glinda’s father, a new role created for the movie.
An important character addition in Wicked: For Good is Dorothy Gale, seen very briefly at the start of Wicked. The blue-gingham-clad lady was seen walking down Oz’s iconic Yellow Brick Road alongside Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion. However, only her backside was visible. Now, Director Jon M. Chu has hinted that she will have a bigger role in the second film. However, no actress is credited as playing Dorothy in Wicked‘s credits, leaving the casting a mystery.
“In movie 1, it was important to let Dorothy be how you want her to be. I didn’t want to step on your images of whatever version of Dorothy you wanted her to be,” Chu told ScreenRant. “But the presence is important because that plays a significant role in what will happen and how they intersect. That was sort of how we played with it. But you’ll have to see movie 2 to know how far we go with her.” he added.
Behind the camera, Winnie Holzman, the stage production’s book writer, and Dana Fox wrote the screenplay for Chu’s movie. Academy Award-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz adapted the musical for the screen.
What do we know about the plot of Wicked: For Good?
Wicked stayed true to the Broadway production and ended with Erivo’s awe-inspiring performance of the stage show’s most loved song “Defying Gravity”, which is how the musical’s first act ended on stage.
In the live-action version, it seems that the director, too, is envisioning a similar pattern and has split the story into two films instead of clubbing them into one movie.
Wicked’s second act is darker than the bright and cheery first act. “Defying Gravity,” marks Elphaba’s transition into the Wicked Witch of the West. It is interesting to note that the Wizard of Oz and Madame Morrible have called her ‘wicked’ after she refused to help them strip the animals of Oz of their rights. Elphaba and Glinda go separate ways as the green witch chooses to rebel against the Wizard while her friend stays back.
The second act of the musical takes place alongside the events of The Wizard of Oz. It opens with Glinda, now called Glinda the Good, and Fiyero, the current captain of the wizard’s guard, speaking with the public of Oz as the Wizard’s officials. Morrible, having narrated a false account of the first act finale, declares that the two are engaged to calm a crowd worried about the Wicked Witch. Fiyero decides to look for Elphaba while she visits her sister Nessarose, the governor of Munchkinland.
Despite Elphaba’s rebellion and Glinda’s journey widening their gap, the two witches find their way back to each other for a short-lived reunion till Dorothy throws a bucket of water on the former.
What songs can we expect in Wicked: For Good?
A confirmed soundtrack of Wicked 2 is yet to be released. However, in December 2023, Schwartz confirmed that two new songs were created for the movie narrative. Speaking to The Messenger, he said, “The new songs were written because of the demand of the story… The storytelling required it, and therefore they were created — the intention was that they were organic and not imposed on the movie.”
