9 gaming predictions we have for 2025

From new titles to new hardware, these are some of the gaming predictions we have for 2025.

Several gaming predictions are being made for 2025 in the hopes that the year will be transformative for the industry. There are expectations from a host of big releases to deliver and that several hardware innovations will come to life.

However, it should be mentioned that the video games releasing in 2025 won’t just include the heavy hitters — don’t be surprised if a few indie titles end up stealing the show. And of course, like every other year, we also hope publishers will deliver some much-awaited remakes and remastered collections.

In addition to games, we might also come across new gaming trends in 2025. It is always possible for publishers to change their ways of releasing new games. Perhaps we might come across a new handheld console? Who knows what is in store for 2025?

Given the numerous possibilities, it is completely justified to be excited for the new year. As such, we have listed 10 video game predictions we would love to see materialise in 2025.

Video games and hardware predictions for 2025

1. A ‘Bloodborne’ remake

Let us kick-start this list of video game predictions for 2025 with one of the most talked-about things in the gaming world in the past decade. Bloodborne was released in 2015 to widespread critical acclaim for the PlayStation 4. Developed by FromSoftware, the creators of Elden Ring, its world was inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft. Be it the layered narrative or the fast-paced combat mechanics, everything worked like a charm.

When Sony revealed the remake of Demon’s Souls for the PlayStation 5, fans were blown away. Bluepoint put a lot of effort into making a visual masterpiece and it did not go unnoticed. The remake was so well-crafted that even four years after its release, it remains one of the best-looking titles on the console.

Fans have, ever since, been asking Sony to give them a similar remake for Bloodborne as well. With reports of Bluepoint working on a project for a while, we cannot help but wonder if it is this anticipated remake that fans have wanted for so long.

2. A first look at the ‘Splinter Cell’ remake

In 2021, Ubisoft announced that its Toronto branch was working on a remake of the vanilla game in the Splinter Cell series. It was revealed that this will run on the popular Snowdrop engine, which also powers titles like The Division and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

For the unversed, Splinter Cell is a third-person stealth action title that follows its protagonist, Sam Fisher. He is a part of Third Echelon, a division of the NSA (National Security Agency). As a member of this organisation, he embarks on a mission to locate two missing CIA officers. The gameplay involves Sam using various gadgets and tools to stay hidden and complete his missions without getting spotted by his enemies. There are no bosses in this game — it only features levels filled with dangerous foes.

The most recent update we received on the remake was from Insider Gaming, which suggested that the rumours of its cancellation were not true. The report further mentioned that the Splinter Cell remake might be released sometime in 2026. We are hoping to learn more about it in 2025, including a teaser or gameplay trailer.

3. ‘Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2’

Konami was on a roll in 2024 — it released a mind-blowing Contra title, a perfect remake of Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1. This collection featured eight games, ranging from the MSX2 version of Metal Gear (that was released in 1987) to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake EaterWhile the curation received mixed reviews from fans and critics, those who just wanted to own these games on their modern consoles were more than happy.

Now, people are eagerly waiting for Volume 2, and the reason is pretty simple — they hope to see Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots being part of it. While it is also likely to feature titles such as Ground Zeroes and Peace Walker, the PS3 classic is what fans are most excited about.

A bonus for gamers will be if the collection transcends the bounds of the PlayStation and makes its way to the Nintendo Switch 2. Will our wish come true? Only time will tell.

4. Several Nintendo Switch re-releases

Ever since its launch, various developers and publishers have re-released several titles on the Nintendo Switch. From Skyrim to New Super Mario Bros. U, there has been no shortage of classic games making their way to this console.

Naturally, a fraction of the industry has now been speculating for some time if Nintendo is sitting on re-releases of its other classic titles such as Metroid Prime: Trilogy, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD. While this was initially dismissed as a baseless rumour, Nintendo released Metroid Prime: Remastered on the Switch and brought this conversation back to life.

Fans have, ever since, been waiting for Nintendo to announce more classic titles on their marquee console. We hope that, if nothing else, Nintendo would want to complete the Metroid Prime: Trilogy on the Switch before releasing the fourth game in the franchise.

5. Xbox adopting a full third-party mode

The Xbox and PlayStation have been competing with each other for decades. The two platforms have massive fanbases and their own set of exclusive titles to attract new gamers.

However, the scale has been titled in Sony’s direction of late as the sales figures of Xbox consoles have taken a dip. Moreover, Microsoft now releases some of their exclusives on multiple platforms. In fact, it’s been announced that first-party titles such as Indiana Jones and The Great Circle and The Outer Worlds 2 will also be released for the PlayStation 5 in the future.

Now, a new rumour is hinting that Microsoft is planning to go full third-party, meaning they will release all of their upcoming titles on consoles like the PS5 and the Nintendo Switch. If this turns out to be true, it will be an exciting time to be a gamer, as nothing is more satisfying than enjoying games across platforms.

6. An ‘Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag’ remake

The mark of a great developer is to cater to the wishes of its fanbase, and Ubisoft lives up to this definition. They know exactly what people want — a fact substantiated by the speculated remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, arguably the best title in the celebrated series. While its existence is, for now, just based on various rumours, we don’t see any reason to dispel them as the developers are reportedly working on recreating several classic titles. We can confidently say that this remake is as anticipated as a new Assassin’s Creed title, if not more.

7. First look of ‘The Elder Scrolls VI’

Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield, which was released in 2023, received mixed responses from players, as did its 2024 expansion, Shattered Space. Therefore, the developers are faced with the uphill task of rebuilding their image. The answer to it might lie in The Elder Scrolls VI.

The game, which was announced in 2018, will be the latest addition to the popular action RPG franchise. Therefore, there is an air of excitement around it.

In March 2024, director Todd Howard revealed that the developers were playing its early builds. This would mean that, by June 2025, we can expect enough progress by Bethesda Game Studios to give the world its first look at The Elder Scrolls VI.

8. ‘Marvel’s Wolverine’

Given that Insomniac Games’ last big release, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, swung into the market in 2023, the gap of over a year can only be justified in one way — the developers are working hard on Wolverine. As such, fans are expecting to see this game during one of the PlayStation 5 showcases at the start of 2025.

If rumours are to be believed, our favourite mutant will be hitting the digital storefronts in 2025. Reports suggest that the game will be R-rated, with no restrictions on blood or gore. Of course, no matter how revealing the rumours are, they cannot be blindly trusted. In any case, what we are certain of is that Marvel’s Wolverine ranks among the best games likely to be coming in 2025.

9. The Xbox and PlayStation handhelds

When it comes to handheld consoles, Nintendo is the unquestioned trendsetter — years ago, they did it with the Game Boy. By the time its real successor, the Nintendo DS, was announced, Sony had its handheld device ready as well. In 2017, Nintendo Switch reignited this trend in the gaming industry that laid the foundation for its future — in the coming years, we were treated to the Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Lenovo Legion Go and other similar handheld consoles.

Sony, too, tried to hop on the bandwagon in 2023 with the PlayStation Portal, which was nothing more than a screen with a controller attached to it. Now, there are rumours of both Microsoft and Sony working on handheld consoles.

These devices will reportedly run all major games natively. In other words, they will be powerful enough to run heavy titles like Indiana Jones and the Golden Circle and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 with ease. It will be exciting to see Microsoft’s first-ever handheld device in action as well as the kind of hardware Sony offers.
