BLACKPINK’s Jisoo is back on the small screen with one of this year’s most-awaited Korean dramas, Newtopia. Know all about the plot, cast, episodes, release schedule and other details of Newtopia here.
A zombie-horror-comedy K-drama helmed by Bleak Night‘s director Yoon Sung-hyun, Newtopia is laced with lighthearted humour, passionate romance, gruesome deaths and fast-paced action. Adapted from the novel Influenza by Han Sang-woon, the series stars singer-actor Jisoo and actor Park Jeong-min in lead roles. The story follows the quirky romance between Lee Jae-yoon (Park), a late military conscript, and Kang Young-joo (Jisoo), a rookie corporate professional. Unable to maintain their long-distance relationship, Jae-yoon and Young-joo initially break up. When they realise their love for each other and decide to meet, a sudden zombie outbreak in Seoul further tests their bond.
Sharing her excitement about the show, Jisoo said in a press conference, “During the pre-production phase, they showed us some prototypes of the zombies, and many of them were unlike anything I had ever seen before. I haven’t had a chance to see how they translated onto the screen yet, so I’m very curious.”

What has happened in the show so far?
In episode one of the 2025 K-drama, viewers meet Young-joo, who is focused on adjusting to her new job. She is also tired of the constant complaints of her boyfriend, Jae-yoon, who’s serving in the anti-aircraft unit at 77 A Tower.
Meanwhile, Jae-yoon yearns to talk to Young-joo and cannot wait for the day he gets discharged. Young-joo is constantly on his mind. So much so that during a drill, Jae-yoon loses focus and ends up dropping a guided missile that he and co-worker In-ho were supposed to carry. His blunder eventually leads to the entire troop losing their phone privileges. As a punishment, they are also made to climb the stairs of the 77-story building where their base is located. The episode ends with Young-joo suggesting they break up, saying they will be apart for a year with no proper communication. A heartbroken Jae-yoon accepts the breakup by sending a heartfelt voice message. Upon hearing it, Young-joo breaks down in tears and regrets her decision. She rushes to the tower to meet Jae-yoon, but on her way there, realises that there has been a zombie outbreak in Seoul!
In episode 2, Jae-yoon and In-ho head down to Eden Hotel, right below their air defence unit, for an errand. Once there, they witness a plane crashing into the heart of Seoul, and the people in the hotel turning into zombies. Elsewhere, Young-joo and her friend Jin-wook, who are on their way to Jae-yoon’s base, also confront the zombies and team up with Tae-shik, a passerby, to survive and get back to safety.
