Talung Lounge

What to order: “Untamed Passion,” featuring three Thai rums in one glass, joined together by fresh citruses

Talung Lounge indulges you with the experience of sipping on your drink of choice while admiring the direct view of the Old Town’s clock tower. The earth tones in the interior compliment the authentic southern Thai art adorning the walls, inspired by “Nang Talung,” a form of theatre involving papers and shadows. Their signature cocktail menu also reflects this artform, as each drink is inspired by a popular character within the plays, turning their personalities into liquid form. If you come with an empty stomach, they have an array of international favourites in their food menu, too.

The Fool Speakeasy

What to order: “The World,” made from gin, rum, with a hit of coconut and kaffir lime, garnished with popcorn

Your fate is in your hands. Ask yourself if you’re playing it safe with a classic, or exploring something out of your comfort zone with these signature cocktails. Hold that question in your mind, and pick a card. The Fool Speakeasy’s signatures are based off of the 22 tarot cards of the Major Arcana. Draw out your creativity with The Empress, reflect on your inner self with The Hermit, surround yourself with light and happiness with The Sun, and so much more. DJs on the regular, along with the warm hospitality, will make sure you feel hesitant to leave.

Dibuk House

What to order: “Message From the Sea,” combining notes of rum with anchovy, fruits, and Thai tea

Dibuk House serves up inventive cocktails to enjoy as you watch the people make their way down the streets of Phuket Old Town. Their way of approaching mixology, coupled with their special techniques, have cemented the bar as one of the must-visits while in the Old Town area. You’ll see the signature menu inspired by the evolution of insects, pulling ingredients to represent how insects adapt to survive in the soil, beneath the surface, and in the air. As they evolve to better themselves for the harsh environment, so do we, and that’s why after a harsh day, a simple Martini at Dibuk House is just what we recommend.

Coolies Club

What to order: “Miner’s Whisper,” a wood-smoked Negroni with a dash of orange juice

Coolies Club celebrates the island’s history and culture, drawing inspirations from Phuket’s tin mining past and Sino-Portuguese cultural exchanges. The old shophouse was transformed by artist and hotel designer Bill Bensley as an homage to the red light district, but elevated. If you’re feeling peckish, they offer an array of bar bites and heavier meals for the full experience. Arrive on Saturday for live performances, and you’ll understand why it’s one of the must-visit bars in Phuket.

Club No. 43

What to order: “Treasure of Andaman,” because we see ‘rum infused with Phuket pineapples ‘ and we’re sold

Club No. 43 is a small, cosy spot for drinks; nothing too flashy, just great cocktails with lively hospitality and swinging retro tunes from the stereo. Sometimes you’re not in the mood to read a whole bar concept, you just need a drink done well, and this bar is perfect for that mood. Their signature menu is inspired by the Old Town, utilising local ingredients that may seem a bit unconventional at the first glance, from dried fish and makwaen peppers, to roselle and tom yum spices.

Overgrown Lounge & Cocktail Bar

What to order: “Tundra,” pairing Vietnamese gin with chili, yuzu, apple, and turmeric

Layan is not famous for the most bespoke cocktails, for the beautiful greenery and the pristine beaches there are more fitting of something simpler. However, Overgrown begs to differ. Their cocktail menu takes you all over the world with drinks inspired by different biomes the earth has to offer, as well as another page utilising fruits and spices from the jungle, true to the bar’s name. The bar also uses an array of Asian spirits, so expect to discover products from local distilleries as well as your usual labels.
