BK Salon is the latest culinary project from Asia’s number one chef and his brother, turning Sathupradit into a cool, hip community

No, this isn’t the spot for a snazzy haircut. Named after a fancy 17th-18th century French social hub for arts and ideas, BK Salon is setting out to be more than just your run-of-the-mill eatery-bar-cafe. It’s a creativity booster – think art workshops, yoga, and even a local farmers’ market. Just don’t expect haircuts. Food-wise, they’ve got everything covered. In the mood for a café au lait? They serve a local blend from School Coffee. Searching for an al fresco brunch spot where your four-legged friends are welcome? They’re pet-friendly. And for those serious dinner gatherings with friends? Try their ‘Lotus Fried Rice’ – a dish featuring a fluffy, velvety omelet packed with fresh oysters in generous portions.

BK Salon is currently in the soft opening phase. Sathupradit. Open Mon-Fri 11.30am-midnight. Sat-Sun 9.30am-midnight.

Phukej in Yaowarat brings a taste of Phuket to Bangkok.

Named after the old official spelling of the city, Phukej promises unique dishes that blend traditional Phuket–or to be more precise, Peranakan–tastes with contemporary tweaks to enhance their flavours. Here, Phuket’s crowd favourite dish, like the pork belly stew (moo hong), has received a new facelift. After simmering the pork belly in a spice-rich stew, the owner Thapakorn “Korn” Lertviriyavit fries and coats it in a rich, caramelised sauce made from the concentrated stew. The venue also features some of the lesser known dishes, like ‘Kaeng Tu Mi,’ a Peranakan curry made with grouper and a sour and spicy broth reminiscent of Tom Yum but carrying a sweet and sour tang from tamarind.

Phukej. Yaowarat Rd. Open Sun – Mon 11am-9pm. Tel. 081-983-6650

The Cheesecake Factory makes its Thailand debut, and promises more than just sweets

Teasing those with a sweet tooth for almost a year, the American popular cheesecake chain The Cheesecake Factory has unveiled its first outlet in Thailand. The highlight, you guessed it, is the cheesecake. Try their Fresh Strawberry (THB 365) topped with an enormous-sized fresh strawberry, or go for their Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake (THB355) for the ultimate chocolate delicacy. Apart from their classic signature treats, The Cheesecake Factory also boasts over 200 savoury items you can choose from.

The Cheesecake Factory. 1/F CentralWorld. Open Mon-Fri 11am-10pm; Sat-Sun 10am-10pm.

Zao Zen offers a glimpse into the Isan noodle multiverse

The brain behind Ekkamai’s Isan specialist Zao is bringing a variety of Isan noodles to the EMSPHERE. Those who frequent ramen noodle spots and Italian restaurants in Bangkok would know the hype around freshmade noodles. But have you heard of a place that serves khanom jeen (rice noodles) fresh from the machine? Zao Zen does it, and it does so very well. The place also features hua kai oak (a plumb clot of rice noodle whose appearance resembles a chicken head). We may be wrong but we haven’t seen other places that serve this type of rice noodle. We also loved the pla yon (freshwater fish caught from Ubon Ratchathani) grilled to perfection, promising a plumb fresh that took us no effort to rip off from the bones.

Zao Zen. G/F The EMSPHERE. Open daily 10am-10pm.

Celebrate the breezy season with IGNIV Bangkok’s new winter menu

Though Thailand may not be the first place we think of when it comes to winter, we can’t help but fall into the festive mood of the season. Equally excited for the approaching cold air is the team from IGNIV Bangkok, who have whipped out a new winter menu, promising a journey through the comforts of the season. Try their pak mor yuan (THB 195), rice sheet roll stuffed with stir-fried ground pork with jelly mushroom, and Vietnamese sausage served alongside a heap of deep-fried golden garlic for extra crunch. Those who love Isan sausage can opt for their macaroni hot plate (THB255) complete with slices of Isan sausages and perfectly ‘dowed’ eggs. End your meal with their homemade soy milk (THB70).

Nahm’s new menu takes you on a savoury stroll across Thailand

As part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the COMO Metropolitan Bangkok, one-Michelin-starred restaurant Nahm has unveiled its new menu (THB3,400+++) in which each course and morsel transports you to different parts of Thailand. Start from the canapes, featuring Dok Khajorn Nha Gung (minced prawn Tonkin jasmine, prawn gravy sauce topped on crispy rice cracker) and Mian Pla Sa-er (a traditional bite with a twist of ceviche kam pachi, white tumeric, green mango served on a betal leaf). The main course features the spicy relish maak maad with pork jowl and heaps of greens, New Zealand’s beef tongue panaeng curry, and charred squid with salted egg and wild cardamom shoots. Chef Aom’s new fine dining restaurant Khaan is making Thai tasting menus cool again

Anything Sujira “Aom” Pongmorn touches always generates buzz, and her latest restaurant, Khaan, whose offerings range from the ‘elevated’ Thai street food to royal Thai cuisine, will probably do the same.

Inside a two-storey shophouse in leafy Soi Somkid, Chef Aom churns out her unique collection of regionally-diverse Thai dishes, boasting Thai flavours with no shortcuts. In her new 11-course dining experience (THB3,850), her iconic mainstays like kai toon gaeng kua, which sees a soft-boiled egg slow-cooked in turmeric oil for two hours served with crab meat curry, and rice paddy crab with sticky rice, featuring the super-fatty and kind of mustard-yellow crab fat, would woo anyone even if you’re already her long-time fan.

Among her brand-new offerings, our favourite was the ‘Bumbai Lamb Curry,’ a hearty main course in which Aom reinterprets a several-decades-old recipe from the royal kitchens during the reign of King Rama V. The lamb shank was succulent and tastefully rich, followed by the scorching, uncompromising heat from the curry which was set off by the basmati rice.

Khaan14 3 Soi Somkid Lumphini. Open Tue-Sat 5pm-1am. Tel. 092-441-6547

The crowd favourite Greek taverna Aesop’s returns in a new rooftop venue

Your favourite Greek taverna has finally made a comeback with its new rooftop location in Sukhumvit Soi 16. Channeling the ancient Athens vibes–with funky, fun reinterpretations–Aesop’s new venue transport you to the Acropolis with its white Greek columns and a grand statue of the mighty Zeus who’s looking over the DJ booth–not to steal your girl(s)–but to ensure the party’s vibe gets going.

Food-wise, expect hearty sharing of good food in dishes like Wagyu beef Cheek Moussaka (THB 950), seeing chunky layers of silky aubergines, highly marbled Australian beef wagyu, and thick, creamy bechamel sauce; kleftiko, Greek style lamb slow-cooked for 12 hours (THB 1,450) served with potatoes and black garlic yogurt; and rotating chicken gyro (THB 550) complete with pita bread and tzatziki.

Head there every Friday and Saturday nights for a live performance, and don’t forget to order some plates to smash and cure your work stress.

Aesop’s Rooftop. 25/F Column Bangkok Hotel. Sukhumvit Soi 16.  Open daily 5pm-midnight. Tel. 062 567 775

Ocken has made a comeback with new cross-continental delicacies

The fine dining counterpart of Roots and Roast has returned to its old post with new cross-continental delicacies. With its new, massive open-kitchen space showcasing its giant rotisserie grill, along with the new bar lounge, the revamped Ocken exudes a livelier, more casual vibe.

Headed by chef Jonny Liu, the new menu still follows his borderless, nonconforming take that blurs the lines between Western and Eastern cuisine in the dishes like the puffy potato (THB 1,200), a spherical potato ball deep-fried in duck fat pairing with Oscietra caviar and mustard mayo; the juicy roasted Piri Piri chicken (THB 1,250) accompanied by marinated tomatoes, charred shishito peppers, and slow roasted tomato sauce; and the crab donabe rice (THB 980), a Japanese claypot rice cooked in crab dashi and topped with crab roes perfect for sharing.

Ocken. 1/F Bhiraj Tower. Open daily 6pm-midnight. Tel. 080-273-3220

Langsuan’s Japanese premium hot pot Shabu Baru lets you indulge in belly-warming shabu by yourself

For those who can count the net number of their friends with one hand, this premium shabu spot is for you. Originally opened in Langsuan, Shabu Baru Mini offers you a peaceful, private spot to enjoy the highly marbled beef in belly-warming nabemono or sukiyaki starting for THB 380. Go for the basic A4 mini cut–the name is a deception as they still offer you a generous portion–or opt for their A5 Yonezawa beef (THB1,500) that tenderly melts in your mouth.

Shabu Baru Mini. 7/F CentralWorld. Open daily 11am-9pm.

Den Kushi Flori unveils its new Autumn-Winter menu 2023

Following its opening in July, Den Kushi Flori, the first branch of the Michelin-starred restaurant outside of Tokyo, has garnered a massive buzz among Japanese food aficionados and omakase fans–the rumours have it that the bookings are harder to get in than Chulalongkorn University as of now. Bringing his experience from France’s 3-Michelin starred Arpège, chef Susumu Shimizu has churned out new, enticing offerings (THB 2,800/five-course lunch experience; THB3,500/seven-course dining experience), from tacos topped with octopus tempura and baked Kagoshima A5 Wagyu beef and young coconut shoots served with taro sauce, to his clay pot rice with the prized and highly-sought-after Girolles mushroom and bonito flake topped with oyster and parsley sauce.

Charoen Nakorn’s much-hyped foodie destination Holiday Pastry is opening in CentralWorld

Channeling the 1920s art-deco vibe of a New York hotel lobby, reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel, Charoen Nakorn’s much-hyped Holiday Pastry is set to unveil its latest branch at CentralWorld this Oct 4.

Dubbed as “The Dining Room,” this new Holiday Pastry has expanded its repertoire to include a wide array of over 100 contemporary, globe-trotting offerings where each bite will transport you to another time and place, while still maintaining their strong stance on delivering an impressive dessert lineup, from the candied tomato stuffed with whipped ricotta and balsamic reduction to the risotto with roasted pork belly cooked in chicken stock, blended with butternut squash cream, and topped with crispy pork crackling. Among its dessert line-up, we loved The Berry Garden, a carefully composed dessert which lets you indulge in vibrant variations of strawberries, from the real fresh ones and basil-infused strawberry mousse to strawberry-flavoured crumbles and translucent strawberry jelly carefully composed on top of mascarpone cheese.

Holiday Pastry. 7/F CentralWorld. Open daily 10am-10pm.

David Thompson’s new restaurant Chop Chop Cookshop serves a judicious blend of Chinese and Western food

Image Credit: Chop Chop Cookshop / Facebook.

Any self-respecting foodie in Bangkok would know–or, at least, have once dined at–restaurants from the Australian-born celebrity chef and restaurateur David Thompson–think the one Michelin-star Nahm and Aksorn. His new place Chop Chop Cookshop, however, has extended his repertoire towards ‘cookshop cuisine,’ a Chinese take on modern western food that once populated Bangkok in the yesteryears.

The place breathes new life into an old five-storey shophouse, transforming the former gold shop into a culinary space while retaining its original charm. Start with the appetiser, Devil on Horseback (THB160), featuring prunes marinated in brandy and stuffed with chicken liver and almonds–all wrapped in bacon and finished with ground pepper. The Debal Curried Sausages (THB450), meanwhile, takes inspiration from the Portuguese Devil’s Curry, swapping the usual chicken with pan-seared sausages smeared in rich gravy sauce.

Chop Chop Cookshop. Open Wed-Fri 6pm-9.30pm; Sat-Sun 12 pm-9.30pm. Tel. 097-008-0519.

CentralWorld’s new pasta spot Matsu Pasta serves a delightfully Japanese-style pasta

‘Wafu’ pasta, a Japanese twist on Italian classics, may not be new to the food scene, but restaurants dedicated exclusively to this umami-rich pasta are rare in Bangkok. The masterminds behind Tsuru Udon and the recently opened tsukemen specialist, Kiri, aim to bridge this gap with their brand-new venture, Matsu Pasta. Here, they serve their house-made ‘nama’ pasta, freshly crafted daily, renowned for its thick and chewy texture.

Try their signature ‘carbonara’ matsu pasta. Drenched in a thick, white creamy sauce with bacon, Parmigiano cheese, and topped with a fresh organic egg yolk, each bite promises a gooey delight. The dish manages to be both light and irresistibly addictive–something you’ll realise only after you’ve emptied the bowl. For those seeking a more daring flavour, there’s the spicy tomato sauce available in four spiciness levels. Be warned: the intensely red pasta is not for the faint-hearted. If it proves too spicy, however, the Parmigiano cheese offers a welcome respite.

Matsu Pasta. 6/F CentralWorld Open daily 11am to 9pm. Tel. 098-985-2828.

Restaurant Int strikes a proper balance between Thai and French cuisines

Image Credit: Restaurant Int / Facebook.

After a short hiatus, chef Pathin “Knock” Promsawasdi, along with his team, is back again with their new fine-dining pop up Restaurant Int. Like its name suggests, Restaurant Int aims to provide a right intersection where you can enjoy not precisely authentic Thai dishes but rather Thai tastes infused with French techniques.

In his 13-course menu, Way Back Home (THB3,990), chef Knock has reinvented traditional Thai recipes with an awe-inspiring creativity as evidently shown in his amuse bouche Blue Crab, which reimagines Thai spicy crab egg salad and chili paste, filling crab egg cream, marinated crab meat onto his house-made seaweed tart topped with French caviar. Fans of his old spot can also find his mind-boggling reinterpretation of kao lao nuea (Thai Chinese beef soup) into a Chinese kale ravioli stuffed with beef tenderloin here as well.

Restaurant Int. Rooftop. Best Western Hotel. Sukhumvit Soi 20. Thu-Tue 5pm-10pm. Reservation via Instagram.

The best new restaurants in Bangkok this September

There are times when the rain decides to fall exactly as we’re about to head out to dinner, but such is the fate of the hungry foodie during the rainy season in Thailand. Whether you’re on the lookout for a hideout from the storms, or you’re willing to risk it sans umbrella for a will-it-won’t-it bike ride across Sukhumvit, September is always an extra special time to have dinner plans. Luckily, this month there are a few new restaurants and notable menus to make it worth the gamble.

This September, we see the re-opening of one of Thailand’s most renowned lifestyle outlets. We welcome fresh faces on the scene, new menus if you’re keen, and a few intriguing concepts. Whether that’s fried chicken with clarified cocktails, or French pigeon with foie gras, here’s where to dine in Bangkok this month, from new restaurants to fun four-hand collabs.

Jim Thompson, A Thai Restaurant reopens with a stellar revamp

Unveiling a fresh facelift and a fabulous reason to return, Jim Thompson, A Thai Restaurant re-opened just last week, honouring Jim Thompson’s legacy and love for hosting. Jumping on the global trend of “vibe dining,” good vibrations are brought to life in the retro-chic restaurant interiors, as Chef Pepe Dasí Jiménez has taken the reigns in the kitchen. The budding young chef presents a contemporary-yet-approachable angle on all your favourite Thai dishes, be it Squid Ink Pad Thai, Mieng Kham Iberico, or Trang-style Roasted Suckling Pig. It is a charming nod to Chef Pepe’s Spanish roots, but it is also a testament to Jim Thompson’s new, more millennial ethos. From the smooth-as-Jim-Thompson-silk furnishings to the imaginative tasting menu, Jim Thompson, A Thai restaurant is a celebration of Thailand’s rich and vibrant culture, and how this is very much still relevant to this day. More developments will come into bloom in the complex in the coming weeks, including The OSS Bar just upstairs, sure to become a popular spot for afternoon tea or late night tipples. Birdies combines two of our favourite things in one place (and does it really well)

What could be better than fried chicken, you ask? Champagne and fried chicken, we say. It is likely you spotted these mouthwatering chicken wings on your Instagram feed, as Birdies has become the talk of Fried Chicken Lover Town this month. Elevating one of our favourite comfort foods to new heights, Birdies serves up fried chicken tenders, legs, and wings in naked, hot honey, and spicy renditions. Paired with an array of imaginative sauces, and a selection of smaller plates (scallops, octopus, taramasalata, to name a few), diners are in for a fantastic and indulgent dining joy ride. Options to add truffle or caviar to your fried chicken are also available on request (you only live once), and cocktails come highly recommended as a suitable pairing. There is also a generous wine list, and, quite importantly, plenty of options for vegetarians (!) too. Birdies gets it.

Japan-ISH blends the flavours of Spain with the delicate nuances of Japanese cooking

What do you call a restaurant that doesn’t quite prepare food like they do in Japan, though it is very much inspired by Japan? You call it Japan-ISH. Located on Soi Sukhumvit 11, Japan-ISH opened just last month as a fusion restaurant that marries the fiery flavours of Spanish cuisine with Japanese cooking. Helmed by Chef Jesus Pascual, the menu features interesting mashups such as Wagyu Beef Tartare, Red Prawn Udon, and a Hojicha Basque Cheesecake, in a modern izakaya-like setting. Located on the rooftop, diners can also enjoy live entertainment and a view of the Bangkok city skyline, whenever they’re not busy ‘gramming the funky cocktail glasses.

New menus and other dining news in Bangkok

The Allium Bangkok welcomes a new menu and a new chef in Remi Verrier

It’s time to revisit The Allium, as Chef Remi Verrier has taken over in the kitchen, and curated a new menu of French dishes, inspired by his journey as a chef, and his own childhood in France. Diners are taken through beautifully presented dishes that honour the ingredients that decorate them, be it the garden vegetable entrée, the Alaskan king crab cake, or the Japanese amadai fish served with flavoured endives. Unmissable is the French pigeon with foie gras, an unmistakably French dish for French dining lovers, which also happens to be “zero waste,” as even the pigeon bones are used for the cherry jus base. Proving that there is not only story but also thought behind each and every one of his processes, you can enjoy these and more of Chef Remi’s creations at The Allium from now onwards.

The two-course lunch menu is priced at THB 850++, while the three-course menu is priced at THB 950++. The 6-course dinner is priced at THB 3200++, and the 8-course dinner is priced at THB 3900++. Wine pairing is available at an additional THB 2000++.

IGNIV celebrates the changing of the seasons with a new menu

It may still feel really hot outside, but luckily IGNIV has launched an autumn menu to remind us that cooler times lie ahead. This season, the Michelin star restaurant has unveiled 20 new dishes, inspired by Head Chef David Hartwig’s autumn celebrations in New York (especially Thanksgiving and Halloween). Diners can expect a nostalgic menu that highlights archetypical autumn produce, like deer, pork cheek, foie gras, apple, langoustine, hazelnuts, and so much more. A trip down memory lane for many, and a trip worth making to IGNIV for all.

The Autumn Menu is priced at THB 4900++, and the Carte Blanche menu including surprise dishes is priced at THB 7900++. Vegan, vegetarian, a la carte, and kids menus are also available.

To everybody’s delight, Santiaga launches an a la carte menu

Santiaga previously only served degustation course menus, so this news is exciting for those who always wanted to order multiple orders of their favourite highlight dishes. From 1 September, Santiaga is launching an a la carte menu, featuring a mix of dishes from Mexico City, Oaxaca, and Yucatan, as well as some of the more lesser-known regions of Mexico. We love the Tlayuda — a large crispy tortilla topped with Oaxacan chorizo made from Mexican herbs, spices, and grated dry aged cheese — as well as the Mexican small crab tempura, the Epazote clams, and the Yucatan tiradito, which is like a ceviche (but better). Several vegetarian options are available too, as well as a must-order signature Santiaga Margarita or a few Micheladas to accompany you for the evening.

The best new restaurants in Bangkok this August 2023

August is our favourite month for long weekends and lengthy meals. Two sets of public holidays and some truly impressive new restaurant openings make this August in Bangkok a fantastic time to make reservations at your favourite (and your new favourite) eateries. It may be raining outside from time to time, but indoors you’ll find inspired menus from Kyushu to the Basque Country.

Go for the wine pairing, add the supplementary courses, order double the desserts. It’s not quite the fully-fledged festive season just yet, but there’s always a cause for dining out and celebrating if you seek it out.

From Japanese fine dining to casual Thai snacking and Cantonese tasting menus, here are the best new restaurants in Bangkok right now, and the new seasonal menus to note.

Den Kushi Flori has landed in Bangkok, to the delight of Japanese fine dining fans

Not one, not two, but three phenomenal Japanese chefs landed in Bangkok early July for a highly-anticipated opening. The brand new Den Kushi Flori Bangkok has officially opened inside the brand new Erawan Bangkok building, as the first outpost of the renowned Tokyo restaurant of the same name. It is the brainchild of Japanese chefs Zaiyu Hasegawa (of Den, Asia’s 50 Best Restaurant 2022), Hiroyasu Kawate (of Florilège), and Susumu Shimizu (of Den Kushi Flori Tokyo). Den Kushi Flori Bangkok is the first branch of the Michelin-starred restaurant outside of Tokyo, yet will feel familiar to those who have visited the original in Shibuya. In a dimly-lit, intimate setting, diners will find themselves around a U-shaped dining counter, with seating for 18 guests only. Taking in the prime view of the open kitchen, we enjoyed the lively energy of the chefs (who happen to be close friends) in action, serving up a blend of their individual cooking styles in a series of innovative Japanese dishes. The experience feels elevated, well-humoured, and tastefully executed with plenty of refined flavour.

Nikaku Bangkok invites diners to indulge in the flavours of Kyushu

Another fantastic Bangkok outpost of a renowned Japanese restaurant, Nikaku has found a home in our city at the W Bangkok. The two-Michelin-Star restaurant from Kitakyushu has opened its doors for discerning diners to enjoy the wonderful produce of Kyushu through the skilled hands of one of the region’s most famous chefs. Chef Funahashi not only meticulously sources the freshest fish from the Kanmon Straits and surrounding waters of Kyushu (delivered even fresher than to many restaurants in Japan itself), but also prepares every dish using the Edo-mae nigirizushi technique. Truly mastering this traditional method of preparation, Nikaku in Japan has been crowned a pioneer of traditional Edomae sushi in Kyushu, and we’re lucky to get to savour it here in Bangkok now. The freshness and the quality of ingredients is evident in every bite, in an Omakase experience that balances tradition, history, and craft through a beautiful and inspired selection. Sala Rim Naam re-opens with romance at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok

It’s time to return to the riverside, as after a brief hiatus, Sala Rim Naam returns and re-opens at the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, on 3 August. With a history that dates back all the way to 1983, Sala Rim Naam has long been known as an authentic and beloved Thai restaurant, though its re-opening proves it is still very much keeping up with the times. Inspired by popular Korean drama King the Land, the re-opening aims to recreate the essence of Asian romance through a romantic Thai dinner experience akin to that of lead characters Goo Won and Cheon Sa-rang. With a view of the River of Kings, diners can enjoy the exact same setting where the show was filmed, and indulge in an array of Thai delicacies that never miss the mark. Whilst Sala Rim Naam was always a romantic destination, its recent re-opening and re-visit by K-drama may make it the most relevantly romantic dinner setting on the riverside right now.

Err opens at the freshly minted Asai Bangkok Sathorn

Those who speak Thai will know that “err” is a casual or colloquial way to say “yes” or “okay,” and it is this casual energy that makes Err Urban Rustic Thai so appealing. Helmed by famed chefs Bo and Dylan (previously of Bo.lan), Err Urban Rustic Thai has opened at the new Asia Bangkok Sathorn. Whilst it may be familiar to some from its Thonglor branch, for the uninitiated, Err is a casual all-day Thai restaurant serving up Thai comfort food inspired by “roadside, countryside, and river market eats.” Using sustainable, organic, and locally-sourced ingredients, diners can expect flavours that feel familiar, presented in casual, uncomplicated dishes. Highlights include the deep-fried whole chicken skins, Northern Thai naem, green curry of chicken on the bone, stir-fried mussels with chilli jam and Thai basil, and a classic pad kra pao made with stir-fried minced beef and served with a deep-fried egg. A very chill, down-to-earth Thai dining venue by a famously good team.

The best new menus to try in Bangkok this August 2023

Sorn re-opens with new additions to the menu, and proves it is still worth the wait

Sorn was not only hard to book this spring, but it was entirely impossible to book for a while. Closed for renovations, diners have been anticipating the re-opening of the award-winning Thai restaurant for weeks. Now, Sorn is back with a fresh face — and even lesser seating capacity than before. Down to 30 seats (and only one seating a night), Sorn retains its status as Bangkok’s most hard-to-book restaurant. Nevertheless, it is still worth every minute on the wait list. An incredible — and, at times, incredibly spicy — journey through Southern Thailand, diners will continue to be taken on a culinary tour of Southern Thai flavours. Whilst Chef Ice Supaksorn Jongsiri’s famed signature dishes remain on the menu (the colourful khao yam, the fiery blue crab, and the impeccable main dish condiments are still here), a few new additions can also be found at Sorn this season. Those who enjoy the kick of must-eat Southern sator will like the tiger prawn and sator served with pickled garlic, bird’s eye chili, and cashew nuts, while the new Southern green curry adds a pleasant aroma to round out the main course.

Sorn’s tasting menu is priced at THB 6800++, with a wine pairing option at THB 4000++ (5 glasses) or THB 6500++ (8 glasses).

There is only one Cantonese restaurant in Bangkok with a Michelin star, and it is Yu Ting Yuan. This summer, the signature Cantonese restaurant at the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok welcomes a new Executive Chef in Cheung Kwong Pong (Tommy Cheung). Bringing with him a deep knowledge and passion for Cantonese cuisine, Chef Tommy has experience working in the kitchens of the two-Michelin-Star Yan Toh Heen in Hong Kong, as well as at the Michelin-starred Ya Ge in Taipei. In Bangkok, he presents a new signature tasting menu that combines traditional Cantonese cooking techniques with seasonal ingredients. The 7-course menu includes highlights such as Prawn Toast with Barbecued Suckling Pig Skin, Double-boiled Fish Maw Soup with Matsutake Mushroom and Conpoy, Wok-fried Canadian Lobster with Abalone Sauce and Black Truffle, and Australian Mayura Platinum Wagyu Strip Loin with Black Bean and Dried Tangerine Peel, to name only a few. Haoma introduces a new menu inspired by Chef DK’s travels

Michelin Star and Michelin Green Star recipient Haoma underwent its first major renovation this year, and along with a snazzy new look, the progressive, zero-waste, urban farm restaurant is now also serving up a new set menu. Inspired by his journeys through the diverse landscapes of India, Chef Deepanker Khosla (DK) presents a menu through 11 courses and 22 expressions, balancing a sense of magical nostalgia with storied recipes and modern interpretations. Highlights from the new menu include the “Bangkok to Biscay,” inspired by Chef DK’s recent travel to the Basque Country, as well as the “Balchao” course, inspired by a traditional dish from Goa. A touch of personal history is presented in the “Aamras, Chaas Aur Caviar” course, inspired by the architecture of the Hawa Mahal in Rajasthan, where Chef DK began his journey as a professional chef, as well as the “Madras” course, which features a hot blue swimmer crab curry that has been prepared over 36 hours. Along with the beautifully plated new dishes, diners can also admire the new Sustainability Centre at Haoma, which explains the restaurant’s award-winning sustainable practices, as well as a showcase of 50 indigenous Indian seeds. A curious culinary journey from start to finish.

The new set menu is priced at THB 4950++. A wine pairing option is available at an additional THB 4590++ (9 glasses).

The best new restaurants in Bangkok this July 2023

The second half of the year looks promising for the culinary calendar, and dangerous for that waistline. We see new restaurant openings in places familiar and peculiar, as well as seasonal creations to celebrate the blossoming of European summer, the arrival of the heavy rains in Thailand, and the emergence of prized black truffle across markets and menus.

In the words of Jay-Z, “this is truffle season, Tom Ford tuxedos for no reason.” Put on your best suit and make those reservations now.

The hotly anticipated Inddee opens in a very familiar location on Langsuan

Langsuan’s most famous fine dining enclave welcomes a breath of fresh air with the opening of Inddee. Nestled into its very own secret garden of sorts, Inddee is housed within a 19th century home, restored with artful touches and an elegant design ethos. After wandering through the mystical arches, guests can choose between dining by the open kitchens and inside the glasshouse downstairs, or upstairs under grand vaulted ceilings. Whilst it is hard not to quietly remember the famous restaurant which was once housed within this property, Inddee manages to hold its own, and begins a refreshing new chapter with Head Chef Sachin Poojary at the helm. His 7-course menu is a journey through India, bringing together rich and familiar flavours to a selection of beautifully presented dishes. Our favourites include the welcoming flavour-bomb “Bites into Inddee,” as well as the Kashmiri Morel dish, the Black Cod with Bengali Kasundi, and Nagpuri Saoji Spiced Quail. We highly recommend ordering the supplement courses (especially the Himachal Lamb and Truffle Brie Kulcha), and the gorgeous wine pairing, curated by none other than Thanakorn “Jay” Bottorff. Noteworthy: A full vegetarian menu is also available.

Sushi Koge offers a serene omakase experience in Ari

Ari has established itself as one of the food hubs of Bangkok, but as many places closed down during the pandemic, we have not seen a good omakase experience in the area for quite a while. That is until Sushi Koge arrives. Featuring beautifully-presented bites but not at the cost of taste, this omakase features freshly flown-in premium ingredients carefully crafted into a melody of courses. Many omakases we’ve experienced tastes great, but doesn’t feel very filling in the end. Sushi Koge allows you to fully experience the taste of the sea, so much so that you’ll be finding yourself in a food coma afterwards.

Hybrid brings together the flavours of the East and West with a unique tasting menu

Mahatun Plaza sees an exciting opening this summer, as Chef Yodying “Sasha” Phoomcharoen brings together an interesting amalgamation of flavours at her new restaurant, Hybrid. Home-grown ingredients are assembled on the plate in homage to the chef’s travels around the globe, in a series of set menus that feel familiar, and yet offer something distinct for the palate. Highlights on the current menu include the Lobster Hybrid (a blend of Thai tom yum kung soup and lobster bisque), the Citron Blossom (a European take on the Thai yum som oh), and the Bloody Boeuf (a larb-inspired beef tartare). Unmissable is also the Fish in a Can, inspired by Thai canned fish salad, served on beautifully cooked risotto. The latter is a nod to Chef Sasha’s 10 years cooking in Rome, which the chef will happily detail and explain in the warm ambience of her open kitchen.

Bistrot de la Mer presents Mediterranean favourites in the heart and at heights of the city

Did you know that the Sindhorn Kempinski is located in an area many are calling the ‘Manhattan of Bangkok’? If you too want to savour a taste of the Mediterranean in the city’s most buzzing district, it’s time to head to Bistrot de la Mer. Located on the 19th floor of the hotel, the new French Mediterranean restaurant is serving up a series of trusted classics. We’re loving the Salad Niçoise prepared table-side, as well as the French Onion Soup, Lobster Thermidor, and the traditional Fish Bouillabaisse. In line with its coastal theme, there is also a seasonal catch-of-the-day available. If you can’t quite make it to the South of France this summer, head to the Sindhorn Kempinski now.

The new menu at Canvas proves that Chef Riley Sanders is still a mad creative genius

It’s always a fun evening at Canvas, one that plays with the mind almost as much as it toys with the palate. This season, Chef Riley Sanders and the team have launched ‘The Colours of Flavour,’ a 20-course menu inspired by 20 of Riley’s very own paintings. Mini cards are placed in front of diners depicting the painting that represents each course, as the food on the plate mimics the colours and composition of the art work. As a result, the experience is very much an art exhibition as much as it is a tasting menu. Colourful, thought-provoking, and playful without being cheesy, Chef Riley not only manages to recreate picture-perfect representations of his paintings, but also inspires through local flavour and quality, sustainably-sourced, and sometimes even rare Thai ingredients. We’re crowning the new menu at Canvas the most Instagrammable new menu in Bangkok right now, and also the most curious.

We are particularly excited about the Laotian kick that Chef Thav brings to the dining table, as the 14-course journey sees the continuation of some of 80/20’s most beloved dishes, alongside his newer creations. Highlights include the Khao Soi Lapin (inspired by the famous Laotian-style khao soi soup, made with rabbit leg ragu and rabbit consommé), Khao Pad Jeow Bong Ped (dry-aged smoked duck grilled over charcoal served with stir-fried jeow bong), and Gaeng Om (grilled marinated Wagyu beef with dill and lemon basil curry).

The best new restaurants in Bangkok this June 2023

The month of June is that sweaty and slightly awkward bridge between the hot season and the rainy season, and our new restaurants round-up for June 2023 kind of follows in the same tracks. We don’t see a long list of new openings and menus this month, but exciting things are definitely cooking for the month ahead.

This June, new restaurants in Bangkok are few, though many are laying the groundwork for grand openings in July. Meanwhile, new summer menus and special dining events are still popping up across town, ensuring that there’s still many a reason to beat the sweltering heat and head out for dinner.

Read on for what’s new at Bangkok restaurants below, be it magnificent reopenings, Mediterranean-inspired brunches, or Mezcal-fuelled tasting menus.

The best new restaurants in Bangkok this April 2023

We’re not on the hunt for eggs this April, but we’re definitely on the lookout for new restaurants in Bangkok. Whilst new openings are few this month, there’s an avalanche of new menus to try. Let’s hop to it.

What a time to be a Bangkok foodie. Just this month, Bangkok has been named home to the best restaurant in all of Asia (it’s Le Du), as well as the home of the second Shake Shack outpost in Southeast Asia (it’s at Central World). Fine diners and casual diners alike have found plenty of reason to order in or eat out, and as the Thai New Year commences, the city has come alive with a summer spirit — albeit a little sweaty.

Mayong chid is blooming. Durian fruit is brooding. ’Tis the Thai summer season to feast and feast and feast. Whether you’re travelling away from the heat or staying in town to see what traffic-free Bangkok feels like, we’ve got plenty of new dishes for you to check out this month. Perhaps you’ll save them for your special Songkran celebration, or perhaps you’ll bookmark for your post-Songkran blues. It doesn’t really matter. Food doesn’t ask questions. Food understands. Here’s where to eat your feelings at new Bangkok restaurants and through new Bangkok menus this April 2023.

Out in the dining room, meanwhile, jazz musicians and even live DJs take to the stage to fill the room with an addictive and mysterious energy. Soho Hospitality strikes again. This time inviting diners to really feel the heat, Yankii Robatayaki and Bar has opened as a Japanese yakitori, kushiyaki, and robata grill, bringing to Sukhumvit 24 all the excitement of fireside cooking, with a fun twist. With 30 counter seats, diners can tuck into Peruvian Anticucho and Chimichurri sauce, pork neck marinated in Korean Gojuchang sauce, or Salmon cooked robata style and marinated with Chipotle sauce. Familiar dishes and ingredients, but with added cool points. The neon red light quote “she’s mad, but she’s magic. There’s no lie in her fire” and the funky wine glasses definitely score high, too.

Acqua Bangkok is now open for both lunch and dinner

We’ve long been lovers of a good lunch set menu, and now one of our favourite Italian fine dining restaurants joins the pack of power lunches in Phloen Chit. The ever-elegant Acqua is now open for lunch, serving up a set lunch (at THB 1500++), as well as the regular a la carte menu between 12-2pm. From Tuesdays to Sundays, you can now tuck in to Chef Alessandro Frau’s beautiful Sardinian creations and enjoy a selection of the famed dinner highlights — especially if you like to be in bed before 8pm.

The best new restaurants in Bangkok this January

Fuego fuses Spanish and Japanese flavours

You may have never thought this was a thing. Opening at The Taste Thonglor, Fuego is bringing together innovative Spanish and Japanese cuisine to present a fusion tapas menu of sorts. Using Spanish cooking techniques and premium Japanese ingredients, the lively restaurant features everything from tuna ham ‘Jason,’ kani cannelloni, and ebi ajillo, over to wagyu paella, uni pasta, and caviar buns. Extravagant, and utterly indulgent.

Larb Siab opens atop Jim Thompson Art Center as a hidden drinking food gem

A hot new rooftop hangout has opened in the city, and this time the focus is not on cocktails but on something far more homely: larb skewers. At Larb Siab, spicy Isaan barbecue is in the spotlight, as the alfresco eatery is serving up a selection of skewers alongside local craft beers. Where yakitori gets a Thai spin, and your usual drinking den gets a refreshed ambience, Larb Siab is truly bringing Isaan street food culture to Siam.
