Weekend trip tip: The best spots for beef noodles in KL and Selangor

From Soong Kee to Yang Ki, explore KL and Selangor’s best spots for delicious beef noodles with tender beef and savoury, rich flavours — it’s what you deserve.

If there’s one thing Malaysians are absolutely passionate about (aside from avoiding traffic), it’s food. With a mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, Malaysia is a paradise for foodies eager to dive into a world of flavours. Sure, nasi lemak may be the country’s unofficial national dish, but let’s not forget the noodle scene—it’s packed with gems. From plates of wan tan mee and cosy bowls of laksa to a midnight fix of smoky Hokkien mee, you’ll never run out of noodle options in Malaysia. Yet, there’s one dish that deserves just as much fanfare as pizza does in Naples: beef noodles.

These beef noodles are a mouthwatering combination of springy noodles, tender beef, and deeply savoury sauces or broths that could convert even the most die-hard rice lovers. Originating from the Tang Dynasty in China, the classic Lanzhou la mian has inspired numerous Malaysian versions.

True to Malaysia’s love of variety, beef noodles here come in multiple forms, from dry to soupy, topped with everything from thin beef slices and meatballs to innards for the bold. Finished off with minced meat sauce made with fermented soybean paste, and chopped spring onions, it’s a bowl that just won’t quit.

Then there’s braised beef brisket noodles, or ngau lam fun in Cantonese, which stars melt-in-your-mouth brisket, beef tendon, and the hero of it all—chu hou sauce which is essentially fermented soybean paste, adding a kick of flavour that’s impossible to resist.

With so many delicious variations, Malaysians simply call them all ‘beef noodles’ and focus on enjoying every bite. We’ve scoured KL and Selangor to find the very best spots for a bowl that’ll hit the spot—because everyone deserves a noodle dish worth dreaming about.

Imagine a beef noodle joint so good, it’s been slinging bowls for over 40 years. That’s Soong Kee for you. Now in the hands of the next generation, they’ve managed to keep the magic alive – no small feat when you’re dealing with noodle perfectionists. Their pièce de résistance? The triple dry noodles—a bowl of springy noodles doing the tango with a homemade minced meat sauce so savoury it should come with a warning label. And just when you think it can’t get better, they serve up a side bowl filled to the brim with intestines and tripes.

Tangkak Beef Noodle stands out from the typical beef noodle offerings in KL with its distinctive, robust flavour profile. The soup, reminiscent of bak kut teh in colour, boasts a rich, aromatic taste that suggests a complex blend of beef and herbs in its preparation. This full-bodied broth is a highlight in itself. The beef components, including meatballs, stomach, brisket, and tenderloin, are prepared to perfection and complement the soup beautifully. For the best experience, consider pairing these tender beef cuts with the mee hoon option for the noodles to soak up all the flavourful soup.

When it comes to Yang Mooi, their Lobak Lam deserves special mention. This dish features succulent sirloin slow-cooked in a flavourful sauce, presented in a claypot alongside fresh vegetables and aromatic herbs. However, their dry beef noodles are equally impressive. While the soup version is undoubtedly delicious, the dry variant truly shines. The noodles absorb the rich sauce, resulting in a dish bursting with intense flavours that will tantalise your taste buds from the very first bite.
