Here, piercingly-blue-eyed chef Alessandro Frau serves up his ‘nuova cucina’ (new cuisine), showcasing a creative take on contemporary Italian dishes. An absolutely fail-safe choice and the favourite of many a Bangkok foodie, Appia is the friendly Sukhumvit neighbourhood restaurant that is popular for family dinners and date nights. Particularly great for sharing, portion sizes are generous, and outdoor seating is available, too. This Italian restaurant has one of the most design-savvy interiors we’ve seen in a long time, and it’s no surprise when you know that Ou Baholyodhin is the mastermind behind it. Giglio Trattoria Fiorentina

We didn’t know a classic trattoria was missing from Sathorn Soi 12 until Giglio opened, and now it seems that many residents cannot live without it. Spotlighting authentic Tuscan food and wines, Giglio is the kind of Italian restaurant where you can enjoy a full meal with friends, or a single dish alone at lunch (they have wine by the glass, too). The pasta dishes are definitely the highlight here, though we recommend you complete the experience with various crostini and cold cuts, and perhaps a meat dish to share. It goes without saying that you cannot leave without having the tiramisu.

While its location definitely feels like a hidden gem, La Bottega Bangkok is far too famous to be dubbed a secret. Set on the second floor of the 49 Terrace in the Thonglor area, the modern Italian restaurant manages to find a balance between rustic authenticity and elegant dining. Chef Marco Avesani has crafted an elevated Italian menu, often highlighting seasonal ingredients while still paying homage to the classics. Italians gather here for genuinely good Italian food, even just for lunch — which goes on for playful long hours if owner Luca is present, and you’re chatting over limoncello. It’s finer dining but it’s not intimidating, and we love that.

Situated next to the award-winning Vesper Cocktail Bar (and helmed by the same Foodie Collection group), La Dotta is a fresh pasta bar, serving up classic and lesser-known-to-Bangkok types of handmade pasta. Highlights include the Pici Pork Ribs, Roman-style Carbonara, and Stringozzi with Pork Ragu and Black Truffle, though you must also get the bomboloni for dessert. The vibes are always in order at Tony’s, a modern Italian-American restaurant located on Sukhumvit Soi 11. With Chef Anthony Burd at the helm, you know it’s always a good time, as the food that accompanies the party-loving crowd is actually really delicious, too. Chef Tony serves up homemade pastas and wood-fired pizzas here, but you’ll also find rarer items you can’t get at other Italian restaurants in Bangkok, like baked clams, mozzarella sticks, or veal parmigiana. Many name Via Emilia as their favourite Italian venue in Bangkok, and yet its location deep into a soi off Narathiwas Rajanagarindra Road gives this restaurant a ‘best-kept secret’ feel. Serving up authentic dishes from the Emilia-Romagna region, highlights include the Tortellini Artusiani (made using a special 100-year-old recipe), the homemade Tagliolini ai Gamberi (with prawn), and Costolette d’Agnello Impanate (tender breaded lamb chops). Definitely also try the Piadina, a thin Italian bread with various fillings. Recently, the Italian TV show Little Big Italy named Via Emilia the best Italian restaurant in Bangkok.
