I’m looking for a man in finance, but what in the world is a trust fund?

Finance, 6’5, and blue eyes—we get that. But what the heck is a trust fund? Here’s what you need to know.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, don’t own a smartphone, aren’t on any social media, or just blissfully ignorant of the world around you, then you’ve probably heard this latest earworm that’s been making the rounds on the interwebs. The unofficial TikTok song of the summer is a somewhat incessant EDM-laced mantra of single ladies worldwide outlining their dream man. But as catchy as the song is, there is a question that some have: what exactly is a trust fund?

What exactly is a trust fund?

The origins of “Looking for a Man in Finance”

Can someone make this into an actual song plz just for funzies

♬ original sound – Girl On Couch

The song was originally by Megan Boni aka girl_on_couch on TikTok. She posted the seemingly innocuous video asking, “Did I just write the song of the summer?”. Before she knew it, the video had gone viral. Several people remixed the sound to transform it into a legit EDM banger. Boni herself was inspired to pursue a music career.

The lyrics are pretty straightforward, providing a short but sweet CV of the man of every woman’s dreams (or at least most women): their physical attributes, occupation, and… a big finance word that evokes financial security, a sense of maturity, and, well, wealth. But what exactly is a trust fund?

Plenty of websites give a breakdown of what a trust fund is though it does sound quite complicated. To be fair, it kinda is when you get to the nitty gritty of it all. For example, Investopedia defines it as “designed to hold and manage assets on someone else’s behalf, with the help of a neutral third party” while FindLaw.com describes it as “an independent legal entity that holds assets for the benefit of trust beneficiaries”.

The legal jargon can be confusing but in simple terms, a trust fund is when someone entrusts assets whether it’s accounts, property, or money to someone to manage it before it’s ultimately given to the person to whom it belongs. For example, a parent could set one up for their still infant child who will get possession of the assets once they’re of age.

So what exactly does this mean when someone is looking for a 6’5 blue-eyed financier with a trust fund? It means they’re looking for someone who got (or is going to get) a large sum of money and properties or has a monthly passive income from the trust fund. Depending on the stipulation of the trust fund, that could be how the money is given. It also means the man is far more stable than a cryptobro.

I guess the simplest way you could put it is this: you’re looking for a sugar daddy. And in this economy, we could all use one, really.
