Pokemon Day is celebrated on 27 February, marking the date the first Pokemon games were released back in 1996. This year, The Pokémon Company has received much hype for the announcement of the new open-world instalment of the series with Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Albeit a bit more niche in terms of player base, the fans of the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) also got to celebrate as the mobile version of the card game was announced.
First published in 1996, the Pokemon TCG was received warmly by fans. They could use cards to battle out with their favourite pocket monsters, and many treat them as rare collectibles with the most expensive card (Pokémon Illustrator [CoroCoro promo]) recently auctioned off for more than USD 5 million.
As with many card games on the market, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! and Magic The Gathering, the Pokemon TCG comes with a competitive scene, with both online and offline championships complete with big prize pools and many followers.
Bringing the Pokemon TCG onto mobile is a great way to preserve the life and popularity of the game, introducing the game to a new fan base that prefer their casual games to be in hand-held format. Now match-ups could be happening on your way to work, waiting for your queue at a restaurant, performing open heart surgery, and more.
Through a two-minute teaser, Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket shows a quick battle system made for mobile, pack openings, and a trading system with friends. The mobile TCG will arrive on both iOS and Android later this year, free to start.
