Southeast Asia was collectively bawling over this heartwarming/wrenching film when it was first released. With its imminent release on Netflix, take a look back at some of the best reactions on the internet to How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies.
Thai films resonating with a global audience is nothing new but How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies—also known by its Thai title, Lahn-Mah—had a chokehold on Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Thailand when it first came out. The internet was full of netizens filming their experiences before and after watching the film, and without fail, each and everyone came out of the theatre with red puffy eyes and tear-streaked cheeks. More tears are set to be shed once the film comes out Netflix on September 12 but before that, let’s revisit what it was like when audiences were experiencing the film for the very first time.

The best reactions on the internet to How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies

The film follows M, a university student with the typical lofty aspiration of making lots of money so he can live comfortably. When his original plan doesn’t turn out to be as lucrative as he hoped, he follows in the steps of his cousin, who gets an inheritance after taking care of her ageing grandparent. M starts spending time with his grandma who’s been diagnosed with cancer in the hopes of getting his own inheritance, but as he does so, he starts to question his motives.
The movie was screened here in Thailand in SF Cinema branches in Thai with English subtitles but also swept across other countries in Southeast Asia. It earned THB 250 million in the first 14 days of its release here and also became the No. 1 movie in Singapore earning more than SGD 330,000, the biggest opening weekend in Singapore for a Thai movie according to CNA. Audience reviews on the internet praised the movie: it sits at 8.5/10 on IMDB and a 4.9/5 on Google reviews. Even on the popular movie review website Letterboxd, it has a 4.0/5 rating.
Playing the role of M is Billkin, a Thai actor and singer who’s been making waves in the local entertainment industry with roles in My Ambulance and I Promised You the Moon. He’s also released a number of singles and even sang a song on the soundtrack of this movie titled “สวยงามเสมอ” or “Ever-Forever”. Director Pat Boonnitipat is also no stranger to the Thai entertainment industry having worked on the TV adaptation of Bad Genius, yet another film that became a sensation beyond Thai borders when it was released back in 2017. But perhaps the most notable talent in the film is Usha Seamkhum, who plays Amah or the titular grandma. This is her first ever film role, and she’s since gathered a legion of fans both Thai and foreign alike.
The trailer touts that the movie is “inspired by true stories found in every family”, and that certainly seems to be the case as many people have posted on social media just how much the film has touched/wrecked them. In Malaysia, the social media accounts of GSC Cinemas showed just how affected the audiences were when watching the film. In the Philippines, theatre staff handed out tissues to moviegoers before they headed into a showing of the film.
Those who weren’t able to watch the movie will be able to finally discover what all the bawling is about once the movie drops on Netflix on September 12. But back when it was still being shown in theatres, the netizens of Southeast Asia posted their experiences and thoughts on social media, so we gathered some of our favourite ones. Here’s a look back at some of the best reactions on the internet to How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies to prepare us for when it finally comes out on Netflix.
