From ‘Little Sister’ to superstar
IU or Lee Ji-eun is one of the most recognisable names in the South Korean entertainment industry. She debuted as a singer when she was fifteen years old and her albums and singles have received mainstream success. Due to her popularity, she was given the title of Korea’s ‘Little Sister’.
Out of her five studio albums and nine EPs, five have reached number one on the Gaon Album Chart alongside 30 number-one singles. This feat made her the solo artist with one of the most number-one songs in South Korea. Since 2012, IU has been included in the top ten of Forbes Magazine’s Korea Power Celebrity list five times.
In addition to being a force in the K-pop scene, IU also cemented herself as a formidable actress. She starred in the popular teen drama, Dream High in 2011 and has since worked on other big projects like The Producers, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, and My Mister.
Specifically in My Mister, she received critical acclaim for her performance which earned her first Best Actress nomination at the Baeksang Arts Awards. She received her second Best Actress nod for the series, Hotel Del Luna.
