New video game sequels you shouldn’t miss in 2025

There are a number of great titles to look forward to this year. Here are some of the upcoming video game sequels releasing in 2025 to be excited for.

As we bid farewell to 2024, the gaming industry remains grateful for the wonderful titles it’s been gifted this past year. But change is the only constant, and so we look ahead to what the next year has in store for us. A cursory look at the lineup tells us that there’s enough reason for us to be excited about the new releases. Among the titles slated to hit the shelves, we will also see major video game sequels in 2025.

So why are we emphasising these sequels from the list of upcoming video games of 2025? For starters, they cover a wide spectrum of genres ranging from action-packed historical adventure titles to immersive open-world experiences. Besides, these releases also carry the weight of improving on what their prequels brought to the table.

If that has your attention, keep scrolling to learn about the most anticipated video game sequels of 2025 and bookmark the ones you look forward to playing.

Top 6 upcoming video game sequels releasing in 2025

1. Ghost of Yōtei

Genre: Action, adventure
Platforms: PlayStation 5
Prequel: Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima was set in 1274 Japan where the protagonist fought the Mongol invasion of Tsushima island. It was a story about a man battling an inner conflict of undoing his life’s lessons and adopting new, unorthodox ways to defeat a lawless enemy. Gameplay-wise, it was a mix of Sekiro and some of the Assassin’s Creed titles (more refined, of course). Overall, it was the complete package that every fan of open-world games should check out.

The sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, is likely to be released in 2025. Set 329 years after the events of the original game, it will feature a female protagonist named Atsu. Even though the developers have their lips pursed about this title, we are confident that Sucker Punch Productions will live up to the massive expectations. Ghost of Yōtei, without question, ranks among the most anticipated video game sequels of 2025.

2. Doom: The Dark Ages

Genre: First-person shooter
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Prequel: Doom Eternal

In 2016, the Doom franchise made an unforgettable comeback — the reboot was developed by id Software and featured the series’ trademark fast-paced combat. From a protagonist who moved around the arena like a beast to the inclusion of new gameplay mechanics such as glory kills that allowed players to perform hand-to-hand moves on stunned enemies, the developers left no stone unturned with the reboot. Moreover, players gained health only if they killed enemies and acquired ammunition if they performed kills using a chainsaw. Such fine touches ensured that nobody felt the game was unfair as their fate rested in their own hands.

Doom Eternal took things a notch higher —  here, you could burn enemies to make them drop their armour and take it. Additionally, you could now do platforming to reach certain locations. Overall, id Software has ensured these games keep improving with every new title.

Looking at that trend, we expect Doom: The Dark Ages to continue on this growth curve. It will serve as a prequel to the 2016 release and trace the rise of the Doom Slayer (protagonist) as he fights the forces of Hell in a dark fantasy setting inspired by the Middle Ages. We cannot wait to see what new gameplay features this title will offer.

3. The Outer Worlds 2

Genre: Role-playing game (RPG)
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Prequel: The Outer Worlds

In 2010, Obsidian Entertainment developed a spiritual sequel to Fallout 3 and named it Fallout: New Vegas. Fans of the Fallout franchise were blown away as the new title gave them everything that was missing from the series — more RPG-esque gameplay, memorable characters and the ability to resolve conflicts through interactions. While it was a great success, the developer never explored more options like New Vegas.

Nine years later, Obsidian Entertainment released The Outer Worlds, an RPG which many considered to be a spiritual successor to Fallout: New Vegas. This title offered a brand-new world, an enticing story, immersive RPG mechanics which let you explore all aspects of your character and a dash of comedy. Of course, it became an instant success.

In 2025, The Outer Worlds will be getting a much-awaited sequel. The best part? Despite being published by Xbox Game Studios, it will be released on PlayStation 5 as well, thereby ensuring all fans of the original title can enjoy it.

4. Death Stranding 2: On The Beach

Genre: Action, sci-fi
Platforms: PlayStation 5
Prequel: Death Stranding

After he left Konami, Hideo Kojima decided to open his own development studio. The first game he developed under the banner of Kojima Productions was Death Stranding, an open-world walking simulator. Players were tasked with saving the world by delivering cargo from one location to another. Of course, the job wasn’t as simple as it sounds — you had to make sure the deliverables weren’t ruined by Timefall — a type of rain that accelerates the ageing of objects and people. There were also alien-like creatures called beached things (BTs) that could sense your breaths. And, if these weren’t enough, some humans would try to snatch your cargo as well.

Given the unique gameplay elements of the original title, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand why Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is getting a lot of attention. The hype around it is based on the expectation that the new game will take a giant leap from the first one in terms of, well, everything. In addition, its voice cast features the likes of George Miller (director of the Mad Max Movies) and Elle Fanning (Super 8, The Neon Demon and The Beguiled).

5. Grand Theft Auto VI

Genre: Action, adventure, open world
Platforms: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/s
Prequel: GTA V

Rockstar Game’s next milestone title is slated for a 2025 release, and from what we have seen so far, it has all the ingredients necessary to be among the best video game sequels in 2025. This franchise hardly needs any introduction — even people who have no connections to the gaming fraternity know about Grand Theft Auto.

When GTA V was released in 2013, it became the fastest-selling entertainment product of all time, and for good reason — it featured a well-written story, a detailed world to explore and a bunch of side activities for fans to partake in.

GTA VI will, no doubt, feature all of that, besides adding other elements. Given that it has been over 12 years in the making, the newest addition to this franchise needs to be miles ahead of its prequel in every aspect. While Rockstar Games has not yet revealed a release date, we can expect the announcement to come soon.

6. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Genre: First-person shooter (FPS), action, adventure
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Prequel: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

The 2007 title Metroid Prime 3, which was released for the Nintendo Wii, was a critical and commercial success. Naturally, fans expected a follow-up game in subsequent years. But Nintendo took a decade to announce its sequel. Why so? Well, they launched the Nintendo Switch that year and wanted to bring the next Metroid Prime title to their modern-age console.

While the game was initially being developed by Bandai Namco Studios, in 2019 it was announced that the production of Metroid Prime 4 was starting afresh at Retro Studios, the original creators of the series. The former, apparently, could not meet Nintendo’s standards.

In 2024, Nintendo finally revealed the first in-game footage of Metroid Prime 4, leading fans to speculate that it might launch the long-due sequel in 2025. While we do not have an official release date yet, it is safe to assume that this will be a cross-generation title available for both the Nintendo Switch and its successor. A prolonged development cycle and the eagerness of the Metroid Prime fanbase make Beyond one of the most anticipated video game sequels to be released in 2025.
