NYC artist Daniel Arsham to hold first-ever exhibition in Bangkok this May

The New York City-based contemporary artist and his creations revolve a lot around fictional archeology. Daniel Ashram looks into contemporary objects and architecture and imagines a sort of future history where these objects are already fossilised. That way, he envisions what he thinks the future will look like, albeit not in a sort of sci-fi way we’re used to when seeing the word “futuristic,” but in a way that gets us to ponder about our future and our daily lives as we live until a new decade comes by. These notions also come into play as Daniel Arsham brings his works to Bangkok.

This isn’t the first time people of the city get to see his art, as pieces from his collection had been put on display as The Standard brand’s 20th anniversary last year. However, this will be the first exhibition of its kind. The largest of Arsham’s collection seen in Thailand so far, themed around the city of Bangkok, will be put on display as part of Central Embassy’s 10th anniversary celebration.

‘BANGKOK 3024’ shows what the artist thinks of our city as a thousand years pass, with eroded concrete and jagged edges. The Excavation Walls aim to evoke nostalgia even with objects found in the present. The Lunar Garden features sand paintings, raked into shapes by time. Five more signature pieces are planned for the exhibition at Level G and Level 1 of Central Embassy. Arsham also created one piece specifically for this exhibition, turning the whole passageway from the BTS to the department store into his signature eroded crystal textures.

Catch Daniel Arsham’s ‘BANGKOK 3024’ from 8 May till 14 July, 2024. You can find more information at Central Embassy.
