Aside from getting your usual venti caramel macchiato, you can go to Starbucks and get coffee grounds for your garden, especially since Vegetable Garden Day is coming up on May 19.
When you go to Starbucks, you’re probably thinking coffee, pastries, and good vibes, but rarely do you think about your household plants. But ever since 1995, Starbucks has actually been helping homebred horticulturists in growing their plants. It’s fairly simple really: Starbucks provides bags of used coffee grounds that can be used as compost. Those who aren’t familiar with this use for coffee grounds may be surprised, but anyone with a green thumb swears by this technique. Now, you can simply go to a Starbucks store to get your coffee grounds for your plants… and perhaps a drink and a pie too, because why not?

“Our vision is to recycle and reduce the waste in our stores as much as possible. This is one way we can accomplish this objective while providing something for our customers at the same time,” said Starbucks Global Responsibility Director Jim Hanna back in 2015. For almost 30 years now, the “Ground for Your Garden Initiative” has given used coffee grounds a new use aside from being made into the signature tables we all see in Starbucks stores.
It was back in April 2022 when the initiative made its way to Thailand. In commemoration of Earth Day, Starbucks stores here in Thailand also began offering used coffee grounds that customers can put in their plants. The grounds, which lose much of their acidity when brewed, turn into a greenish material that helps plant growth due to its high nitrogen content and also helps soil retain water.
This May 19th is Vegetable Garden Day. Whether you’re already an experienced gardener with a thriving plot, someone who’s looking just after a few pots, or you’re a total newbie who doesn’t know where to start, Vegetable Garden Day is as good a day as any to start your gardening journey or just give your plants a treat with a generous helping of Starbucks coffee grounds.
