Shows that are set or filmed in Thailand like ‘The White Lotus’

Like the upcoming season of The White Lotus, these shows are set or were filmed right here in Thailand.

The past few years have seen an uptick in movies and shows being filmed right here in the Land of Smiles. From 2011’s The Hangover Part II, we’re now on the cusp of the release of The White Lotus Season 3, which is set to drop on Max on February 17. But before that happens, we take a look at some of the other shows that are set or have been filmed here in Thailand.

From The White Lotus to The Serpent, these are seven shows that are set or filmed here in Thailand

The White Lotus

Getting the obvious out of the way, the upcoming third season of the hit HBO show will be set in the eponymous resort’s Thailand location. The series was filmed at The Four Seasons Koh Samui, and if that isn’t Thai enough, our very own Lisa Manoban will be starring in the series. Plot details are a mystery, which is not surprising, but I’m sure we can expect plenty of dark humour and morbid shenanigans. Surely the gays won’t be after Lisa… right?

Ms. Marvel

Yep, an MCU series was shot right here in Bangkok. The 2022 series that introduced us to adorable fangirl Kamala Khan, played by IRL fangirl Iman Vellani, shot its fourth and fifth episodes here in Bangkok, which stood in for Pakistan when Kamala went back in time. The production used the facilities of Studio Park in Samut Prakan.

Alien: Earth

This prequel series to the 1979 film was filmed right here in Thailand. The Bangkok Post reported that they filmed here in Bangkok as well as Surat Thani, Krabi, and Phang Nga. Filming wrapped in July of last year. The series is set to drop on FX and most likely on Disney+ Hotstar here in Thailand sometime this summer. 

The Night Agent

Netflix’s action thriller series follows FBI agent Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso, who becomes part of the mysterious Night Agent program. The end of the first season sees him getting off somewhere for his first official mission. Thailand was one of the locations the series filmed in for Season 2. Is Thailand an actual location in the series or just a stand-in for another country? You can find out yourself now that the second season is streaming on Netflix.

The Flight Attendant

Bangkok plays an important part in this HBO series. The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco plays Cassie Bowden, a flight attendant who frequently drinks and sleeps around with her passengers. During a layover in the Big Mango, she goes about her usual routine of drinking heavily and bedding one of her passengers from the flight only to wake up the next morning all bloodied and the passenger’s throat slit open. That kicks off a whole lot of intrigue and mystery as Cassie tries to figure out who killed him.

The Serpent

It’s a little hard to believe that a serial killer was running rampant in the streets of Bangkok in the 1970s. This series co-produced by BBC and Netflix is based on the very same serial killer. Charles Sobhraj, also known as “The Serpent”, killed 14 tourists while here in Thailand. The series was filmed here in Bangkok and also Hua Hin with production lasting for ten months. Filming was stopped due to the pandemic but resumed in England after five months.

Germany’s Next Topmodel

There are plenty of reality TV shows that have been filmed here in Thailand. Germany’s Next Topmodel is not necessarily one of the shows you would think would be filmed here. But not only did they do just that, they did it twice. Season 2 brought the contestants to Bangkok while Season 7 brought them to the island of Phuket.
