Chanel’s FW21 show proves that kohl-rimmed eyes are a trend to watch

A makeup trend that is effortlessly sophisticated.

When it comes to Chanel, the beauty of makeup is revealed in the smallest details. Whether it’s the spectacular colours or the keen manner, simplicity and femininity come together, it’s all about creating looks that are not just wearable but also effortless. Chanel’s Global Makeup and Color Designer Lucia Pica has time and again artfully created looks that bring out charm and subtlety while adding a bit of drama in places. Her blurry, slept-in eye looks have always been lauded and her take on the traditional smokey eye had always been refreshing.

The Fall-Winter 21/22 show once again brought that very aesthetic to the forefront giving us another look that’s promising and endearing – especially for Indian women who long to wear kohl in the most dramatic of ways. Virginie Viard’s show was about energy and desire and with the signature tweeds and two-tone silhouettes came bold top to bottom lined eyes that shone with promise. The rest of the face was kept extremely simple, with just the right amount of blush and highlights. The base makeup in signature Pica fashion, is soft, feminine and delicate with a hint of gloss. Hair was glossy, fuss-free and laidback while the makeup went ahead to the party.

The bold eyes and brushed out brows were juxtaposed with a smooth-looking complexion and that somehow gives this look that beautiful taken-care of skin and defined, but imperfect eye looks. There’s such a natural sophistication about them that we can’t deny.

Chanel’s Fall-Winter runways

A post-pandemic party signature, thick kohl-rimmed eyes were perhaps the best trend to come out of the runways. The top-to-bottom lined eyes are perfect to make a statement, and pair beautifully with masks. The focus is the eye – and from graphic liner looks, Pica went ahead with a hazy, not-so-perfect but bold, kohl look.

And as the runways reflected the underground Parisienne nightclubs, so did the makeup – it was raw, pulsating and added a layer of drama. The blurred-out kohl look went soft on the upper and lower lashes giving it a worn-out vibe. What we loved is the fact that the lines were not sharp or perfect – they were imperfectly hazy and had a lived-in look. The makeup heroes here are: Le Crayon Kohl Intense Eye Pencil and Le Volume Révolution de Chanel Mascara alongside Chanel Les 4 Ombres in Modern Glamour

The rest of the face was matte, focussed, a tad sculpted but mostly, bare to accommodate the glorified eyes. What draws us the most to this look is the harmony of balancing the eyes with the soft skin. Alluring.
