What is SearchGPT, and could it become the new Google?

OpenAI has unveiled SearchGPT, a new type of search engine, currently still in prototype form. Here’s all the details.

Like other recently launched alternatives, it takes direct aim at web search leader Google, thanks to the possibilities offered by artificial intelligence.

OpenAI has launched an innovative search tool called SearchGPT, which is currently a prototype being tested. It aims to significantly improve online searches by combining artificial intelligence with up-to-date information from the internet. It offers precise, relevant answers, while clearly citing its most reliable sources every time, so that users can immediately access further information if necessary.

As with ChatGPT, SearchGPT handles queries in a conversational manner, accessing the latest information available online. On paper, its strength lies in its ability to provide contextualised answers, unlike Google, which provides a list of links. The idea is to make the information provided more accessible and understandable.

Only a handful of people are currently testing SearchGPT, but it’s possible to sign up to a wait list to be able to try it out in the near future: chatgpt.com/search.

Other AI-boosted search engines are already emerging, starting with Perplexity, already one of the most popular AI tools on the web. This search engine answers very specific questions, proposing different forms of content if required (text, photos, videos, etc.), and links to all the sources used each time. Meanwhile, You.com features an artificial intelligence module capable not only of answering general questions, but also of suggesting solutions or summarizing text, all in natural language. Both solutions work in several languages.

Ultimately, these solutions could be considered more intuitive than Google, as they operate in a conversational mode and provide access to more contextualised information. However, despite citing sources, this information is not always reliable. Google is working on its own upcoming AI-powered search engine, currently known as SGE (for Search Generative Experience).

Generative artificial intelligence is turning the web search industry on its head. It remains to be seen whether or not Google will remain the benchmark once it, too, has made this shift.
