Qwen, the AI model that’s been released by Alibaba, is the new model making waves because it technically surpasses the likes of DeepSeek and ChatGPT.
The world of artificial intelligence was shaken up when DeepSeek came on the scene a few weeks ago. The Chinese-made AI is an actual open-source AI unlike ChatGPT and rattled companies like OpenAI and NVIDIA with its capabilities that operate at the same level as top AI models but only using a fraction of their cost. But a new AI is giving DeepSeek a run for its money. Alibaba recently unveiled a new version of its AI named Qwen which they claim surpasses both DeepSeek and ChatGPT.

Meet Qwen, Alibaba’s very own AI model

Tongyi Qianwen or Qwen is a language model developed by Alibaba Cloud that was originally launched back in 2023. Last month, Qwen 2.5-Max was released, the latest edition of the model which Alibaba claims outperforms ChatGPT and DeepSeek. “Qwen 2.5-Max outperforms … almost across the board GPT-4o, DeepSeek-V3 and Llama-3.1-405B,” said Alibaba Cloud as per a report by Reuters.
The AI is able to get information from videos that are hours long, analyse data from forms, and even control a PC, which is somewhat concerning. However, a video on the Platform Formerly Known as Twitter shows that its capability to control a PC hasn’t come to far… yet.
A writer on Tom’s Guide put ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Qwen to the test to see which one comes out on top. According to them, ChatGPT remains “the most well-rounded and consistently high-performing chatbot”. On top of that, Qwen also has significant limitations because of censorship in China. Any political questions that go against the Chinese government will go unanswered.
Many have speculated that DeepSeek’s rise did not just rattle American tech companies but Chinese ones as well. They suspect that’s why Alibaba released the new version of its AI model just a few weeks after and on the first day of the Lunar New Year despite being an important holiday. With Alibaba’s claims that this AI model surpasses the top-performing competition, we now wait as to who will take the top spot next—and weather it will be American, Chinese, or perhaps from somewhere else.
