CEOWORLD Magazine’s “World’s Best Countries To Visit In Your Lifetime” report reveals Thailand as the best country to visit. Are we surprised? Not really.

The Land of Smiles is smiling.

According to feedback from over 295,000 readers of CEOWORLD Magazine, Thailand is the best country in the world to visit in your lifetime. Yes, the bias is inevitable and yes, we agree with this ranking.

The 2024 edition of the list ranks Thailand first, followed by Greece, Indonesia, Portugal, and Sri Lanka, respectively. Other countries that make up the top ten include South Africa, Peru, Italy, India, and the United Arab Emirates.

The list comprises 67 countries, with four Asian countries occupying spots in the top ten: Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and India. Thailand occupies the first spot with a score of 72.15, Greece with a score of 67.22, and Colombia in the last spot with a score of 48.71.

Although the report does not state the criteria for the scoring, it points out the versatility and beauty our nation has to offer, including the nightlife, food, art, culture, markets, temples, and beaches.

The first AI travel and hospitality influencer is here https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/tech/tech-news/first-ai-travel-hospitality-influencer-sena-z-cenizaro/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 08:09:38 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1919942

Cenizaro Hotels and Resorts and AI company BRACAI have introduced SENA Z, an AI travel and hospitality influencer.

It seems that artificial intelligence is now making its way into the hospitality industry. Cenizaro Hotels and Resorts, whose portfolio includes a range of properties in locations like the Maldives and Singapore, has partnered with BRACAI, which calls itself a “boutique AI consultancy”. Together, they’ve uncovered something that they promise will “imbue the digital travel sphere with a profound cultural narrative”: SENA Z, their very own AI influencers focusing on travel and hospitality.

[Hero image: Cenizaro Hotels and Resorts]

Meet SENA Z aka Sena Zaro, the first AI travel and hospitality influencer

A cursory glance at Sena Zaro, which is the character’s given name, and you might think that she’s just another tourist doing some island hopping and having the time of their life. However, with a closer look and a keen eye, you’ll realise that Sena is actually AI-generated. Cenizaro says that SENA Z was created in “response to the burgeoning presence of digital influencers across social platforms” and that it’s “engineered to seamlessly integrate into the guest experience.”

“Through the launch of SENA Z., Cenizaro’s goal is to captivate audiences through cutting-edge technologies and inspiring adventures,” Cenizaro says in its press release. “Her mission goes beyond travel; it’s about championing a lifestyle of curiosity, personal growth, and appreciation for global diversity.”

Sena already has her own website and Instagram set up. A section on her website chronicles her “30th birthday” which she spent with “family” at The Residence Bintan. Cenizaro says that her content will not just be limited to its portfolio and will promote sustainability, local culture, wellness, and nature among other things. Scroll through her posts on Instagram and you’ll see pretty much all of these things featured on her page.

“SENA Z. is about bridging tech with our love for exploration”, Liza Quddoos, Director of Corporate Communications at Cenizaro, says. “She shows us how digital and human elements can enhance each other’s existence, enriching life rather than replacing our experiences.”

Artificial intelligence has been a hot topic in the past few years. As everyone tries to deal with the ramifications of AI and how it affects different industries, an AI influencer in the world of tourism and hospitality will, at the very least, begin discussions of its role in this industry.

A Schengen-style visa for Southeast Asia? Thailand considers joint visa across 6 nations https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/thailand-single-visa-initiative-promotes-easy-asean-travel/ Tue, 09 Apr 2024 20:28:43 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1918445

In a move to promote seamless mobility across Southeast Asian countries, Thailand is leading an initiative for a joint visa programme spanning six nations. The proposed single visa would encompass Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, and Myanmar, collectively hosting 70 million tourists last year. Notably, Thailand and Malaysia contributed over half of this figure, clocking in USD 48 billion in tourism revenue.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin aims to streamline tourist entry by implementing a single visa for these six nations, thereby boosting tourist arrivals and maximising revenue per traveller. Targeting affluent long-haul holidaymakers, this initiative will enhance Thailand’s appeal as a tourist destination while also fortifying its aviation and logistics sectors. The Thai PM has also discussed this Schengen-like Single Visa with counterparts from Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, and Myanmar in recent months.

Thailand’s Single Visa initiative: Key points

The proposed Single Visa seeks to boost tourism in Thailand, a sector accounting for 20 percent of its total employment and contributing 12 percent to its USD 500 billion economy. The initiative aims to lure long-haul vacationers to extend their stays and explore multiple countries by offering a common visa for six regional nations. Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, a former Thai Hotels Association president, suggests extending the visa validity from 30 to 90 days to make the offer more attractive.

Thai PM Thavisin aims to welcome 80 million tourists by 2027, with the government actively pursuing initiatives to achieve this goal. Recent efforts include signing reciprocal visa waivers with China and providing temporary visa waivers to passport holders from India, Kazakhstan, and Taiwan. Additionally, the government plans to promote event-based tourism and develop casinos with entertainment complexes as part of its tourism-centric strategies.

While the proposed venture promises to revolutionise tourist travel and the perception of holidays in the region, experts believe that bilateral visa-waiver agreements between individual nations may present fewer challenges in implementation.

Japan unveils new digital nomad visas for 49 nations https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/japan-to-introduce-new-digital-nomad-visa/ Thu, 08 Feb 2024 03:32:42 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1911035

Japan is all set to join the digital nomad visa trend from late March 2024. The terms and conditions of this opportunity begin with a salary threshold: at the time of application, candidates must have an annual income exceeding 10 million Japanese Yen (approximately INR 59 lakh). This offer extends to self-employed and freelancing individuals, meaning applicants need not be employed by a separate company.

With its futuristic amenities and layout, Japan is an ideal country for digital nomads. Whether it’s internet cafes, an affordable cost of living, advanced technology, and a host of tourist destinations to explore, Japan truly is a remote worker’s delight. In addition to being an attractive option for candidates, digital nomads can also serve as a viable means to boost tourism and domestic innovation.

Japan digital nomad visa: Countries covered and requirements

For the uninitiated, a digital nomad is a person who works remotely but only stays in one place for a short or midterm period. With digital nomad visas, they can work amidst the scenic landscapes of new countries. For the Japan digital nomad visa, however, candidates must be from a country that has signed a tax treaty with Japan or holds visa-exempt status in Japan. This list of 49 countries and territories includes the USA, Australia, and Singapore, among others. Once approved, applicants can live and work remotely in Japan for six months, compared to the current 90-day duration of visa-free short-term stays. Digital nomads are also allowed to bring their spouses and children along.

It is important to note that remote employees with the Japan digital nomad visa will not be considered residents of the country and are not eligible to apply for the resident certificate or lease long-term accommodation.

The rules and duration of stay under the digital nomad visa scheme vary from country to country. For instance, Taiwan allows digital nomads to stay for three years, and South Korea permits a stay of two years.

The most powerful passports in 2024: Singapore and Japan joined by four EU nations https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/most-powerful-passports-in-the-world-2024-singapore-japan/ Fri, 12 Jan 2024 06:11:48 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1908294

France, Germany, Italy and Spain, all members of the European Union, have tied with Singapore and Japan for the most powerful passports in the 2024 Q1 ranking. According to the rankings by the London-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm Henley & Partners, these six nations boast the most coveted travel documents, allowing visa-free travel to 194 countries.

This number marks a record high for any country in the 19 years since the Henley Passport Index has been published. While Singapore and Japan have consistently held the top positions over the past five years, the 2023 report stated that The Lion City had visa-free access to 192 countries while Japan had access to 189 countries, the first time it toppled to the third place in the past five years.

The Henley Passport Index is the only one of its kind based on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). The index includes 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations. Countries are ranked according to the number of countries their citizens can travel without obtaining a prior visa.

Ranking the most powerful passports in the world: Noteworthy gains and losses

According to Henley & Partners’ website, the UAE has experienced the most significant rise in the Henley Passport Index over the past decade. With visa-free access to 183 countries, it has jumped to the 11th position on the current index from the 55th position in 2014.

Ukraine and China are also among the top five countries with the most substantial improvements in rankings over the past decade, with “a net total gain of 21 places each”. Both have climbed two positions higher since 2023 and hold the 32nd and 62nd ranks, respectively.

“While Russia has seen a net gain of 24 destinations over the past decade, its visa-free score and ranking has[sic] barely shifted since 2017, and it now sits in 51st place with access to 119 destinations,” states the Henley Passport Index.

India, on the other hand, stands at the 80th position with visa-free access to 62 countries.

Dr. Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and the creator of the index said, “The average number of destinations travellers can access visa-free has nearly doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. However, as we enter the new year, the top-ranked countries are now able to travel to a staggering 166 more destinations visa-free than Afghanistan, which sits at the bottom of the ranking with access to just 28 countries without a visa.”

The 10 most popular travel destinations for 2024 (Thailand makes the list, but not Bangkok) https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/most-popular-travel-2024-destinations-tokyo-seoul-vietnam-thailand/ Thu, 11 Jan 2024 06:33:34 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1908202 popular travel destinations 2024 tokyo

While Dubai received the most positive comments from travellers on TripAdvisor, Asia is expected to be central to many vacation plans in 2024. Expectedly, Thailand makes the list, but it’s not Bangkok city that takes the cake this time.

As the New Year dawns, thoughts can turn to projects for the months ahead, including vacation plans. Nearly four years after the pandemic closed borders, Asia stands out as the most trending direction of travel in 2024, according to the growing popularity of destinations on this continent on the reviews site, Tripadvisor. Every year, the American giant analyses the content of millions of comments, as well as the variation in the ratings given to hotels and restaurants, in an attempt to identify the places attracting the most interest from internet users. In the resulting 10 destinations named as the trending travel hotspots for 2024, Asia not only takes the top five places, but also counts a total of eight entries.

Tokyo is the top trending destination for travel in 2024

Tripadvisor considers Tokyo to be the top trending destination for 2024. If the forecasts prove right, this popularity would build on a success story that began with the reopening of Japan’s borders in October 2022. Between January and June alone, 10.7 million visitors traveled to Japan, more than during the pre-pandemic period in 2019.

By the summer of 2023, no fewer than four million hikers had made their way to Mount Fuji. In fact, the Japanese authorities have announced plans to introduce an entry quota to avoid turning the sacred mountain into an overwhelmed tourist attraction. It remains to be seen whether this predicted popularity will be confirmed over the coming months, and whether the recent earthquake on the Noto Peninsula or the fire on a Japan Airlines Airbus A350 at Haneda airport might have dampened travellers’ enthusiasm.

Tokyo isn’t the only destination in Asia trending among travellers for 2024, according to Tripadvisor. Vietnam is the only country in the top 10 to benefit from two representatives, namely Halong Bay and the town of Sapa, a gateway to trekking in the country’s mountains. Otherwise, South Korea and its capital Seoul, and Palawan Island in the Philippines rank highly in the list.

Asia’s strong presence in this list — based on the greatest year-over-year growth in interest on the reviews platform — varies greatly from the list of travel hotspots that have proved most popular with TripAdvisor users in recent years. Dubai, for example, tops the list of travellers’ favourite destinations for the third year running. It is followed in this year’s ranking of favourite spots by Bali and London.

Here’s everything you need to know about updates to UK Visa requirements in 2024 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/changes-to-uk-visa-requirements/ Sun, 07 Jan 2024 13:31:14 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1907616

The UK visa, a key document for immigrants seeking work, study, or travel opportunities, is undergoing significant changes in 2024. that will impact people planning to come to the UK. These visa updates will impact those planning to visit the UK, and the adjustments to the tourist visa will reshape the way visitors experience the nation.

The impetus for these updates comes from a drastic increase in immigration to the UK. The net migration, representing the difference between those entering and leaving the UK, reached 7,45,000 in 2022.

According to the new regulations, significant changes have been made to various visas, including the Standard Visitor visa, Graduate visa, visas for care workers, Skilled Worker visa and partner visa.

  • Starting January 2024, the Standard Visitor visa will now allow specific business activities. Travellers can attend interviews, meetings, seminars and conferences, negotiate deals, sign contracts, and promote their business. Additionally, professionals like journalists, professors, cameramen, bodyguards, and others can engage in work activities under a tourist visa.
  • Notably, social care workers will no longer be able to bring dependents, such as partners and children, on their visas. This adjustment will take effect promptly.
  • For the Skilled Worker visa, the minimum salary requirement has been raised from GBP 26,200 (approximately THB 11,37,863) to GBP 38,700 (approximately THB 16,80,737). However, this change doesn’t apply to the Health and Care Worker visa and will be effective from April 2024.
  • The minimum income for a partner visa will also increase from GBP 18,600 (approximately THB 807,796) to GBP 29,000 (approximately THB 12,59,467), eventually reaching around GBP 38,700 (approximately THB 16,80,737). This increment will happen in two phases, with the first increase to GBP 29,000 (THB 12,59,467) in Spring 2024 and the final amount by 2025.
  • The Graduate visa, offering a two-year unsponsored work permit to UK graduates, will be under review starting January 2024.
  • By April 2024, the Shortage Occupations list for the Skilled Worker route is expected to significantly reduce.

South Korea unveils digital nomad and ‘K-culture’ visas to boost tourism in 2024 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/south-korea-new-digital-nomad-and-k-culture-training-visas/ Tue, 26 Dec 2023 11:17:47 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1906700

South Korea has introduced a digital nomad visa and a K-culture training visa in 2024 to attract more remote workers and Korean culture enthusiasts. Here is everything you need to know about these new permits.

The growing global fascination with South Korea, fuelled by the immense success of K-pop stars and K-dramas, has sparked a surge in the desire to experience the nation’s unique culture. Responding to this demand, South Korea is set to introduce two new visas in 2024 — the digital nomad visa and the K-culture training visa — aiming to make the country even more tourist-friendly.

To capitalise on the increasing influx of travellers, South Korea is expanding its visa categories to attract two crore (20 million) foreign tourists next year. The introduction of the digital nomad visa and the K-culture training visa aligns with the nation’s vision to position itself as a preferred destination for global travellers.

South Korea’s digital nomad visa seeks to promote the “workcation culture” by allowing individuals to reside in the country while working remotely for up to two years. While specific requirements are yet to be disclosed, details are anticipated to be released by the second half of 2024.

The K-culture training visa is designed to welcome enthusiasts of Korean content who aspire to delve into the thriving entertainment industry. In tandem with this initiative, South Korea plans to host “K Culture Events” in 2024, showcasing Korean music, local cuisine, and beauty. Additionally, the country will organise the “K Tourism Road Show” in countries such as the US and Sweden.

South Korea’s commitment to enhancing the travel experience

In its pursuit of becoming more traveller-friendly, South Korea is implementing reforms to streamline travel within the country. The introduction of foreign mobile payments aims to facilitate shopping for international visitors. Furthermore, a traveller mobility app is in the works, allowing foreigners to seamlessly book taxis, buses, and trains. The government also plans to create English versions of existing navigation systems, as reported by The Korea Times. These measures collectively contribute to South Korea’s vision of offering a more accessible and enjoyable experience for tourists.

Cambodia’s Angkor Wat is now officially the eighth Wonder of The World https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/angkor-wat-in-cambodia-is-the-eighth-wonder-of-the-world/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 10:10:48 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1902577

Angkor Wat, one of the finest examples of Khmer architecture in Cambodia, is now the eighth Wonder of The World.

The Royal Embassy of Cambodia in London shared a post on Facebook, congratulating Cambodia on becoming the world’s eighth wonder, surpassing Italy’s Pompeii to attain this esteemed title.

From ancient glory to modern wonder: The intriguing history of Angkor Wat

Located in the northern part of Siem Reap, Angkor Wat is an integral part of Angkor Archaeological Park, housing the ruins of the Khmer Empire dating from the ninth to the 15th century. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, the complex includes not only Angkor Wat but also Angkor Thom and the Bayon Temple, known for their intricate carvings and magnificent sculptures.

Constructed under the rule of King Suryavarman II, Angkor Wat stands as the largest religious structure in the world. The city of Angkor once thrived as one of the most sophisticated and prosperous kingdoms of Southeast Asia.

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Brahma and Vishnu, the temple has five major towers symbolising the peaks of Mount Meru, believed to be the abode of the gods in Hindu mythology. The temple’s sculptures vividly depict scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, adding layers of cultural richness to this architectural marvel.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s report on Safest Places to Travel in 2024 unveils 15 countries and 15 cities from around the world.

Safety is a paramount concern for many travellers, especially those embarking on solo journeys. With this in mind, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has released a report on the Safest Places to Travel in 2024, featuring 15 countries from around the globe.

The portal has also compiled a list of the Safest Cities To Travel To In 2024, with Honolulu, Montreal, Reykjavik, Sydney and Amsterdam securing the top five positions.

Safe Travels 101: What makes a destination tourist-friendly?

Several factors contribute to the safety of a location, including robust infrastructure to handle natural disasters and accidents, the friendliness of citizens (especially towards the LGBTQIA+ community and people of colour), the ability to prevent violent crimes, and the absence of terrorism.

Forbes highlights that while Nordic countries and cities frequently appear on safety lists, it is not a guarantee of perpetual safety. For example, Iceland declared a ‘state of emergency’ in November due to high seismic activity, anticipating the eruption of the Fagradalsfjall volcano, leading to evacuations in Grindavík.

While Canada may top the list in 2024, there’s no assurance it will consistently remain in the top ten. Safety levels can vary across different parts of the country.

Parameters defining the safest countries and cities in the world in 2024

The portal conducts regular surveys, seeking people’s opinions on various safety parameters in places they have visited. They also incorporate data from the Global Peace Index, travel safety ratings by the US State Department, and GeoSure Global scores of major cities.

EU shifts to digital visas for Schengen area https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/eu-shifts-to-digital-visas-for-schengen-area/ Wed, 15 Nov 2023 06:22:50 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1900786 schengen visa digital visa

People applying for visas to visit Europe’s Schengen area will soon do so via an online platform, under a change adopted by EU foreign ministers on Monday.

The shift towards digitalisation of the visa process will also do away with the need for applicants to get a sticker in their passport, meaning no more appointments at consulates or service providers’ offices.

EU shifts to digital visas for Schengen area

The change, unveiled after a long legislative process, will take effect after technical work on the visa platform, expected to take months, then publication in the EU’s administrative gazette.

The Schengen area comprises 23 of the 27 EU member countries plus associated neighbours Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

The online visa system “will simplify the application process for travellers,” said Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, whose country currently holds the EU presidency.

Once it is in place, people applying for short stays in the Schengen area will upload documents, data and electronic copies of their travel documents with biometric information, and pay fees, all through an online platform.

If approved after database cross-checks, they will receive a cryptographically signed barcode to print off or store in a device.

But some first-time applicants or those with a new passport or changed biometric data may still need to attend an in-person appointment.

schengen visa digital visa

Some countries, such as Australia, already have similar systems in place, where the online visa is linked to a person’s passport without the need for a sticker in it.

In most cases, citizens from more than 60 countries around the world, including Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the United States, do not need to apply for Schengen visas for short visits.

But they will still be required to apply online for pre-screened entry under a much-delayed European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), similar to the ESTA system employed by the United States. ETIAS is now expected to be up and running in mid-2025.

All visitors entering the European Union — with visas or visa waivers — will find themselves going through an automated EU Entry/Exit System (EES), whose implementation has also been much delayed but expected to be in place at the end of 2024.

The computerised EES will record a person’s details and biometric data along with their date of entry and exit, keeping track of overstays and refused entries.

From November, tourists from India and Taiwan will no longer need a visa to enter Thailand https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/indians-can-visit-thailand-visa-free-from-november-10-till-may-10-2024/ Tue, 31 Oct 2023 11:28:07 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1899359

As the tourist season peaks, Thailand has exciting news to share. Starting November 10, citizens of India and Taiwan will be able to enter the country without a visa.

This visa-free travel arrangement will be in place until May 10, 2024, with the aim of welcoming more travellers from these countries to Thailand. This update follows Thailand’s earlier announcement to eliminate visa requirements for Chinese tourists, a move especially popular among visitors to the country before the pandemic.

According to a report in Mint, spokesperson Chai Wacharonke explained, “Arrivals from India and Taiwan can enter Thailand for 30 days.” This means that nationals of these countries can explore Thailand’s natural beauty, rich history, delicious cuisine and vibrant culture for an uninterrupted 30-day stay before returning to their home countries.

The report adds that from January to October 29 this year, Thailand has already welcomed 22 million guests, generating revenue of THB 927.5 billion.

Data from the Tourism Authority of Thailand reveals that Malaysians have been the largest group of visitors this year, with more than 3 million arrivals. They are followed closely by Chinese tourists, who numbered 2.65 million arrivals by October 15. South Koreans and Indians also contributed significantly to Thailand’s tourist numbers this year. The temporary abolition of visas for Indian and Taiwanese nationals opens up the opportunity for an even larger group of people to enjoy their vacations in this Southeast Asian gem.

It’s worth noting that Thailand is not the only country offering visa-free entry to Indians. Earlier this month, Sri Lanka also announced that travellers from India, China, Russia, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand can enter the country without paying visa fees until March 31.

Real Talk: Do hotel rankings actually matter? https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/do-hotel-rankings-matter/ Mon, 09 Oct 2023 04:00:22 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1896262 do hotel rankings matter

As the Michelin Guide prepares to rate hotels, and the World’s 50 Best Hotels just celebrated its inaugural list, we take a closer look at hotel rankings from two very different perspectives — and how they matter.

While travellers can check the sustainability credentials of hotels given a Green Key award or certification from EarthCheck, or to networks of independent luxury hotels such as Relais & Châteaux to help them choose addresses that match their search criteria, there are also a host of rankings out there claiming to rank the best in the business. As gastronomic rating institution Michelin prepares to present its own hotel ranking, we take a look at some of the tools and lists currently available to holidaymakers to help them select a place to unpack their bags.

To book a holiday abroad, without going through a travel agency, many of us regularly turn to booking platforms such as Booking and Hotels.com. Beyond allowing users to compare prices and locations, their selections of “top” hotels are based on the opinions of travellers who have posted comments after their stay. Whether on Google, Booking or TripAdvisor, the content of reviews and forums often play a key role for consumers when it comes to choice of lodging, particularly since they are often venturing to a completely unknown territory.

Do hotel rankings matter? Consumers versus experts

The consumers’ choice

A search for a hotel can be filtered by a variety of factors including by average review rating. It’s logical that travellers are looking for the best or at least best value, especially when the hotel itself is the destination, as in the case of an all-inclusive holiday. Hence the importance of a listing of the best-rated addresses. A fixture on the digital travel landscape since the early 2000s, Tripadvisor has made its ranking of the world’s best hotels an annual benchmark. The latest edition came out last May, with the “Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best” crowning the Top 10 in the world, along with a host of other categories. To compile these awards, the US-based platform scours the thousands of comments published for each establishment to identify the hotels with the most glowing reviews. The “Best of the Best” award is presented to the best addresses, drawn from the last 12 months of reviews found among the platform’s “more than 1 billion reviews and opinions of nearly 8 million businesses.”

Similarly, the hotels that receive the most praise from travellers on Booking.com are honoured at the “Traveller Review Awards.” Recognition is given to hotels with a rating between 8 and 10 and at least five online reviews. This is how establishments earn the famous blue plaques they often place on their reception counters. Both of these tools focus on feedback from average travellers, which inevitably leads to suspicion as to the veracity of the comments on such sites.. Both platforms are attempting to tackle this issue head-on with Tripadvisor publishing a dedicated report last spring indicating that 1.3 million posts considered false were intercepted last year. Nearly three quarters of these were reportedly detected before they could be read online.

The experts’ opinions

Meanwhile, tourism professionals also have an opportunity to weigh in on the very best in the hospitality sector. Since 1993, the “World Travel Awards” have been handing out national, regional and global prizes to candidates (hotels, airlines, destinations, car rental companies, etc.) who are chosen by designated players through a geographical system. While consumers are involved in deciding which awards to present, it is mainly travel agents and decision-makers in the tourism industry who take part in the selections. While some may question the objectivity of the final results, the rankings feature different categories of accommodation to also put the spotlight on accessible establishments as well. Luxury hotels are not the only winners, as they have their own category. There are also lists of top resorts for families and honeymooners, as well as the best romantic, boutique and all-inclusive hotels.

Other tourism professionals are also sharing their opinions and experiences in a brand new ranking, whose inaugural edition came out last month: “The World’s 50 Best Hotels.” The group behind the famous ranking of the world’s best restaurants are now turning their attention to accommodation. “Over the past 20 years, we have become the international market leader in providing the most reliable lists of expert-curated restaurants and bars on the planet. To us, it seems like a natural fit to complete the circle, uniting restaurants, bars and hotels…We want to create a unifying platform for the world’s best hotels and the amazing individuals behind them, but also for travel-loving consumers, helping them to choose the very best places to stay,” explained Managing Director Tim Brooke-Webb earlier this year.

As with the ranking of restaurants, the verdict was reached by an army of anonymous voters coming from various fields. They are in fact travel journalists, hoteliers and “experienced international travellers,” according to the group. “We believe that there is a huge gap in the market for a truly egalitarian hotels ranking…. Unlike other awards, there is no cost for entry, shortlisting and attendance,” explained Mark Sansom, Director of Content for “The World’s 50 Best Hotels.”

In the end, travellers may end up feeling lost faced with this mass of sources, each claiming to have spotted the best hotel in the world… The initiators of La Liste, which draws up an annual list of the “top 1,000 best restaurants in the world,” also decided this year to apply their formula — which compiles a variety of sources of opinion and expertise to define what constitutes the crème de la crème — to hotels. Travel guides, rankings, reviews, blogs… over 300 sources were used. In the end, it was Venice’s Hotel Cipriani that emerged victorious from the first edition, a luxury hotel where the price of a night is at least 700 euros (about US$740)…

Forget stars, Michelin is launching Michelin Keys to reward the world’s best hotels https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/michelin-keys-are-coming-guide-extends-to-hotel-rankings/ Fri, 06 Oct 2023 13:05:06 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1896163 michelin keys for hotels

Stars are for food, keys are for hotels. The Michelin Guide will start rating hotels in the same way as restaurants, it announced on Thursday.

The editors say they want to create a “trusted reference” that helps travellers cut through the vast array of online hotel suggestions.

Director Gwendal Poullennec said the original Michelin Guide, launched in 1900, “was created to enlighten travellers at a time when there was a lack of information.”

“Today, by contrast, they find themselves confronted by a mass of information. Our users spend on average 10 hours in front of screens to prepare a trip and consult more than 10 platforms — it’s an obstacle course,” he said.

Poullennec took over the guide in 2018, the same year it bought Tablet Hotels, a US-based site offering boutique hotel stays around the world.

Their teams have been working together to create an initial selection of 5,300 hotels across 120 countries, with the best due to receive their awards in the first half of 2024.

Rather than the stars awarded to the top restaurants, the best hotels will get keys based on several criteria including architecture, individuality, service, comfort and price.

As with restaurants, these will be decided by teams of anonymous inspectors.

These days, the Michelin Guide makes most of its money through referrals from its website, taking one euro per reservation.

Hotels will pay a 10 to 15 percent commission to Michelin for reservations through its site, Poullennec said, vowing that editorial and sales team will operate independently.

Why the thriller ‘No More Bets’ is scaring Chinese tourists away from Thailand https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/entertainment/movies/no-more-bets-scaring-chinese-tourists-from-thailand/ Mon, 25 Sep 2023 10:00:40 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1894367 no more bets thriller scaring tourists away from thailand

A film called No More Bets is scaring Chinese tourists from returning to Thailand, as many believe it is based on a terrifying reality.

For millions of Chinese tourists, Thailand used to be a happy land of water fights, lantern festivals and delicious food. But thanks to social media rumours and a blockbuster movie, the kingdom’s image among many Chinese people is now one of dangerous illegality and seedy scam border compounds — leaving visitor numbers plummeting.

Thailand is hugely reliant on tourism, particularly from China. The country welcomed more than 10 million Chinese visitors each year before the Covid-19 pandemic — numbers Bangkok is desperate to see return.

But its struggling holiday industry has been hit by viral social media rumours claiming that tourists might be kidnapped and sent across the border to work in brutal scamming compounds in Myanmar or Cambodia.

Chinese tourist Jia Xueqiong spent a week in Thailand with her husband and daughter, despite her parents’ disapproval.

“They felt it was not safe here, and tried to persuade us not to come,” the 44-year-old nurse told AFP outside Bangkok’s unusually quiet Grand Palace.

“All my friends said ‘You go first to explore, if it’s ok we will follow’,” she said.

Why the thriller No More Bets is scaring Chinese tourists away from Thailand

Her family and friends’ concerns were stoked by No More Bets, a high-octane thriller claiming to be based on “real events”, about a computer programmer who ends up in a violent scamming compound in Southeast Asia after being trafficked through an unnamed country remarkably similar to Thailand.

The movie has some basis in reality.

Extensive reporting by AFP and other media has documented thousands of Chinese people lured to centres in Southeast Asia, mainly in Myanmar and Cambodia, to operate online scams fleecing victims for large sums.

But most of those involved are tricked into it with fake offers of lucrative work — not dragged off the streets while on holiday — and so far, no such scam compounds have been found in Thailand.

Despite only being released in August, No More Bets has become the third-most-popular film in China this year, raking in 3.8 billion yuan ($521 million) and super-charging online discussion about the dangers of visiting Thailand.

Beijing student Leanna Qian, 22, told AFP that while she knew some of the stories were “exaggerated”, she was still concerned about travelling to the kingdom.

“I’m worried that we’ll be taken to other places, such as Cambodia or Myanmar,” she said.

Action call

Thailand welcomed a record-breaking 11 million Chinese tourists in 2019 — a quarter of all visitors that year, according to official data.

But since the start of 2023, only 2.3 million Chinese tourists have come, and last week the Thai government announced temporary visa-free travel for Chinese travellers in a bid to restart the flow.

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents, told AFP that negative online chatter had played a role in the drop.

“Things don’t happen in Thailand but Thailand is targeted,” he said.

The rumours grew so persistent that earlier this year, the Thai embassy in Beijing released a statement reassuring visitors that officials would “take measures to secure tourists’ safety”.

And across the border, the president of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, Chhay Sivlin, told AFP that the situation was worse.

Chhay Sivlin said her company has received no Chinese tour groups so far this year, and feedback highlighted many tourists’ worries about safety.

“If the Chinese government helps, we will receive tourists soon because Chinese people listen to their government,” she said.

‘Never return’

Back in China, travel agents are switching their focus from foreign trips — which accounted for more than 40 percent of their tourism revenue pre-pandemic — to pushing domestic tours.

Business is also suffering the after-effects of Beijing’s draconian Covid control measures, which saw around 1.2 billion people unable to leave China after its borders were shut in 2020.

Gary Bowerman, director of travel and tourism consulting firm Check-in Asia, said it took time for people to get used to travelling abroad again.

“Going out of the country again, you start hearing about these scams… It does have an impact on people’s psychological willingness to travel,” he told AFP.

Meanwhile, domestic travel is booming — especially for younger people, who view it as an on-trend alternative to flying abroad, Bowerman explained.

In the office of a Beijing-based travel agency, which declined to be identified, staff were busy pushing domestic holiday promotions.

The agency formerly employed more than 200 people but downscaled to only a few dozen as a result of the worsening global economy, visa difficulties, and a slow aviation industry recovery.

“There’s not much willingness to go abroad,” employee Guo, who asked to be referred to by only one name, told AFP.

And, she added, for Southeast Asia “there’s also the fear that they could go but never return.”

Outside Bangkok’s Grand Palace with her family, tourist Jia dismissed the fears of many inside China.

“It isn’t like what’s said on the internet, being scammed or other things,” she said.

“There is nothing like that at all.”

When is the best time to book a flight, and get the cheapest tickets? https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/when-is-the-best-time-to-book-a-flight-cheap-tickets/ Thu, 21 Sep 2023 11:00:27 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1893934 best time to book a flight to get cheap tickets low airfare

Planning your long weekend trip in October? Looking for a holiday idea for December? Make sure you book smart, as there are better times than others for booking your flights. Here’s when to book and catch the best ticket prices online.

Travellers looking to book their next flights on the internet will soon be able to get a little extra help. This will take the form of a small warning indicating whether they should book now, or whether they’re better off waiting a little longer to get lower fares.

When is the best time to book a flight?

The online flight comparison service Google Flights is rolling out a new feature that lets you determine the best time to book. The idea is to wait for the right moment to book in order to get the lowest fares. Thanks to all the data it has collected over the years, Google Flights can now offer precise information on the times when fares are usually lowest for a given destination. This is used to give users an on-screen message like, for example, “the cheapest time to book is usually later, from September 13 to December 7” in their search results. This will work for searches for which sufficiently extensive and reliable data is available.

The new feature joins those already available from the service, such as the ability to see whether the current prices for a flight search are low, typical or high relative to the average. Google Flights also offers price tracking, which sends notifications to users when flight fares drop significantly for selected dates or flexible dates, depending on their preferences.

When is the best time for booking cheap flights?

For some flight results, you’ll now also see a coloured “price guarantee” badge, which means that the fare displayed won’t drop any further between now and the day of departure. Note that if you book a flight with this badge, Google will refund the difference (via Google Pay) if the price then drops. For the moment, this is only available for flights departing from the United States.

Generally speaking, choosing routes with stopovers and avoiding weekend departures are the best ways to save on long-haul flights.

Bangkok Airways is now weighing passengers before boarding https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/bangkok-airways-to-weigh-passengers-before-boarding/ Tue, 19 Sep 2023 06:40:10 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1893475 bangkok airways weighing passengers

Bangkok Airways is the latest airline that is asking its passengers to step on a scale before boarding.

The airlines made the announcement on September 14 on their Facebook page. The notice stated that the weight check survey will take place between September 15 and October 31, 2023.

[Hero and featured image credit: Yurix Sardinelly/Pexels]

Why is Bangkok Airways weighing passengers before they board?

In their statement, the airline wrote, “In compliance with the International Civil Aviation standard regarding the use of standard passenger and baggage weights for weight and balance calculation purposes, the conducting of a standard weights survey is essential to the safety and efficiency of a flight in determining that the actual weight does not exceed the maximum take-off weight limitation.” For this, Bangkok Airways is weighing passengers and their carry-on baggage at the boarding gate. “We assure [you] that the information will be kept confidential and will be used to update standard passenger and baggage weights information (sic),” the airline added.

Bangkok Airways is not the first airline to introduce travellers to a weighing scale before they board a plane. Earlier this year, Air New Zealand launched a similar survey, and Korean Air has also been conducting passenger weight checks at Incheon and Gimpo airports in September.

This measure has been introduced across some airlines including these three to follow the standard protocol set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The data collected helps airlines to accurately measure the amount of fuel the aircraft might need for each flight. This not only saves fuel but can allow the airlines to save up to USD 1 billion (THB 35,74,75,00,000) annually. Passenger weight data also helps flights to be more efficient.

However, this weight survey is voluntary for Bangkok Airways travellers, too, as it has been for Korean Air and Air New Zealand flyers. Those who want to opt out of it can simply inform the airline staff, the company said in response to comments on the Facebook post.

Thailand to ease visa rules for Indian and Chinese travellers https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/thailand-to-ease-visa-rules-for-india-china/ Sun, 03 Sep 2023 04:30:48 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1891251

In its quest to boost the tourism industry to nearly to nearly USD 100 billion in 2024, Thailand might relax visa rules for tourists from India and China.

Among the top tourist destinations in the world, Thailand is also making plans to allow international travellers to stay longer in the country, with caps of 15 and 30 days.

How is Thailand planning to ensure an easier visa process for India and China?

China contributed to the largest number of international travellers before the pandemic hit in 2020. Currently, the nation’s citizens have to undergo a costly and time-consuming visa application process, writes Bloomberg. Indian passport holders, on the other hand, have to pay USD 57 as the fee for a 15-day visa on arrival. In an attempt to increase inbound travel, Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin also showed interest in increasing the number of countries whose citizens can travel visa-free to the nation.

On August 28, the PM discussed some options with executives of Airports of Thailand PCL and several airlines, which were aimed towards bringing more foreign travellers in the fourth quarter — a time when tourism peaks in Thailand.

In another meeting, Thaneth Tantipiriyakij, president of the Phuket Tourism Association, suggested that scrapping application fees for travellers from India and China would be more beneficial than granting visa exemptions. “Visa fee exemptions are a ‘quick win’ for tourism,” he said, adding that while international travellers to Phuket through July had reached about 70 percent of pre-pandemic levels, “Chinese arrivals recovery rate is only 30 percent,” according to Bloomberg.

Additionally, even though China contributed the most number of tourists in July, the return of Chinese travellers to the country is still slower than expected. This can be attributed to the strict e-visa requirements that were introduced in May, adds the report.

Great news for travellers: Bhutan slashes its daily tourist fee by half https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/bhutan-is-slashing-daily-tourist-fee-by-half/ Mon, 28 Aug 2023 09:57:40 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1890578 bhutan daily tourist fee

In a bid to attract more foreign travellers, Bhutan is reducing its daily tourist fee by half.

Since September 2022, travellers had to pay an additional USD 200 (approx. THB 7050) per night as part of the ‘Sustainable Development Fee’ (SDF). This is now being reduced to just USD 100 (approx. THB 3525) and is slated to come into effect from September 1, 2023.

Why has Bhutan reduced its daily tourism fee?

Best Asian vacation destinations

A major reason behind this step is the fact that even a year after Bhutan resumed travel post the COVID-19 pandemic, the country is still struggling to revive its tourism sector and bring in more globetrotters, writes Reuters.

In September 2022, the SDF was increased to USD 200 (approx. THB 7050) from the earlier USD 65 (approx. THB 2291) a night in an attempt to reduce the carbon footprint that travellers bring to the kingdom, according to the report. However, the charge seems to have resulted in a decrease in the number of travellers visiting Bhutan.

With the new update, Bhutan hopes to boost income generated through tourism. The new tax will be applicable for four years and end on August 31, 2027, according to a statement by the Bhutanese government.

The statement says, “This [change in the tourist fee] is in view of the important role of the tourism sector in generating employment; earning foreign exchange, realising the potential for spillover benefits for ancillary industries, and in boosting overall economic growth.”

Along with the waiver, Bhutan will also provide a 50 percent discount on the SDF for children between 6 and 12 years of age. This means that for children belonging to this age group, the tourist fee will now be USD 50 (approx. THB 1,762) per night, clarifies the government. Those aged below six will not be charged the SDF. Additionally, the 24-hour SDF waiver for tourists staying in the border towns will continue, according to the statement.

For Indian visitors (those who have an Indian passport or voter ID), the tourist fee applicable will be BTN 1,200 (INR 1,199) per night. Discounts and waivers on the SDF are applicable to Indian children, too.

The government will conduct periodic assessments of scenarios with respect to both domestic and international tourism. The incentives may be discontinued to promote the High-Value Low Volume tourism policy of Bhutan after August 31, 2027, adds the statement.

North Korea has resumed its commercial international flight https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/north-korea-reopening-passenger-flight-china/ Mon, 28 Aug 2023 03:17:27 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1890462

For the first time in three years, North Korea has resumed its international flight departing from China.

North Korea has finally opened its borders three years after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The country’s carrier, Air Koryo, landed its first international commercial flight in Beijing, China on August 22.

Air Koryo flight JS151 flew from the North Korean capital of Pyongyang and reached Beijing’s PEK Airport at 9:17 am (local time). Earlier, the plane was supposed to ply on August 21 (Monday), but two hours after its scheduled landing time, it was announced that the flight was cancelled.

According to a report in Reuters, it wasn’t clear who was on the Beijing flight, but Western tour companies operating in China said that it was a special flight carrying back North Koreans stuck in China due to border closures.

According to another report by Reuters, China’s civil aviation authority told the media house that Air Koryo will fly between Pyongyang and Beijing thrice a week on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from March 26 to October 28. Also, Air China, which used to fly on this route, hasn’t yet applied to resume operations, as informed by the authorities.

Air Koryo is also expected to fly to Russia’s Vladivostok on Friday, August 25, furthering its border relaxation measures.

In 2020, North Korea shut all its borders and cut off almost all contact with the outside world in the wake of the pandemic. This was done to control the rise of COVID-19 cases in the nation, according to Reuters. Over the last year, the country slowly resumed cargo train and ship traffic. Last month, North Korea even received government delegations from Russia and China, and a bus carrying the country’s athletes to Kazakhstan for a Taekwondo tournament crossed the China border.

Considering the upcoming public holidays in Thailand, are you looking to take time off this July long weekend? Well, if you plan it right, you could get more days off and extend that vacation for up to a whopping ten days.

Feeling that mid-year crisis? Need some time off to go watch Barbie or Oppenheimer? Or do you just want to get more sneaky days without work and feel like you’re on summer vacay? Either way, there are a lot of public holidays coming up at the end of the month, and if you plan it right, you could get a lot of time away from work. 28 July is a public holiday because of King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s birthday, 31 July was just declared a government holiday, and 1 and 2 August are public holidays because of Buddhist Lent.

If you’re in Thailand, it is likely you will get 28 July and 31 July off, whilst the public holidays on 1-2 August may vary from company to company. Depending on your workplace, work may be off for you for three or four days.

Barbiecore hotels around the world to live out your life in plastic fantastic https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/best-barbiecore-barbie-hotels-to-explore/ Wed, 19 Jul 2023 03:35:33 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1884774

There’s no doubt that the Barbiecore aesthetic is heavily trending on the Internet, thanks to the Barbie movie which officially releases on 21 July, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Just like its name, Barbiecore is an homage to everything pink, and in recent months has made its way into everything from fashion to watches and even hotels — so we can all vicariously live out our Barbie dreams.

[Hero and Featured Image Credit: The Beverly Hills Hotel]

In conjunction with the trend and upcoming Barbie premiere, Airbnb has unveiled a Barbie DreamHouse beachfront mansion in Malibu, which one can rent. And may we say, it has major Ken-ergy! The place is fitted with a disco roller rink to showcase your best skating tricks, a gym to keep your Ken-like biceps in shape, a supersized pool, and a very pink bedroom and closet that Barbie would approve of. Availability is limited, though, with Airbnb offering only two one-night stays that can accommodate two guests on July 21 and July 22 2023. You can book it here on July 18 at 1AM Hong Kong time.

Barbie in pop culture

The iconic Barbie doll might have received her fair share of criticism in past decades for perpetuating unattainable beauty standards and promoting gender stereotypes, yet she continues to be popular even for generations to come. She has proliferated pop culture too, spawning the ’90s classic tune Barbie Girl and even gracing Sports Illustrated‘s 50th-anniversary cover in 2014 — which led to the dolls flying off shelves like hot cakes shortly after.

In the latter year, Mattel also launched Barbies in different body types such as petite and curvy shapes — marking a departure from its trademark hourglass figure. Recent times have seen Mattel continuing along that path by rolling out dolls modelled after real life trailblazers the likes of primatologist Jane Goodall and tennis ace Naomi Osaka.

There is no doubt, that Barbie, even 64 years later, continues to be one of the most recognisable toys in the world. Fast forward to today, Barbie has not only collaborated with major fashion houses such as Dior, Versace and Moschino but has also inspired designers to introduce vibrant pops of pink into their creations. A notable example? Valentino’s Pink PP collection, which comprises apparel, accessories and makeup all in the same exuberant fuchsia shade.

If there were a real-life dollhouse, then Trixie Motel would be it. Think velvet cushions, floral bedding, pink swirls and hearts everywhere. Featuring rooms with names such as Malibu, Yeehaw, and Queen of Hearts, Trixie Motel also has a gorgeous pool area that can be booked for events. Designed by drag queen Trixie Mattel (who also has her own Trixie Doll, a non-Mattel-branded Barbie), this place is nothing less than a dream and exudes vibrant energy splashed in pink.

Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel, Spain

Spend your vacation the ultimate Barbie way at Paradiso Ibiza Art Hotel in Spain, where you can laze the days away lounging by the poolside and sipping on pink cocktails. This stunning art deco-styled hotel showcases pink in every little nook and cranny. In case you want to catch some rays, two of Ibiza’s best and most iconic beaches, Calas Bossa and Comte, are only a 10-minute drive away.

As you explore the candy floss-coloured hotel’s uniquely curved architecture, you’ll discover new elements every time you stop to snap photographs for the ‘Gram. Bright pink-rimmed mirrors, chromatic tiling, creamy-pink canopies around the pool, and contemporary art peppered across the property make for great Barbiecore photo ops. Our suggestion: Explore their library space, cafe bar, as well as Zero Suite room right in the middle of a hotel lobby made out of clear glass. The hotel allows its guests to stay here for free for a night and the suite is a completely furnished room with all amenities.

At night, head to the award-winning Tapas del Mar for signature cocktails like Pinkcoco or ginger strawberry mojito and pair it with their best-selling dishes such as garlic prawns and calamari fritti. To enjoy a more secluded time for that romantic occasion, book the penthouse. It comes with a spacious terrace where you can enjoy an unobstructed view of the beach. The Beverly Hills Hotel, California

When vintage glamour and history come together, it is safe to say that the end result is a property as iconic as the Beverly Hills Hotel. Decked out in Barbie pink at every turn, this hotel is probably one of the few hotels in the world that is more famous than its guests, which range from Marilyn Monroe to British royals and even JFK and Elizabeth Taylor. The hotel was painted pink in 1948 to match the California sunset. The colour proved to be an instant hit and since then it has been unofficially coined as the Pink Palace. Our favourite bit about this property is the Le Jardin Des Rêves Dior pop-up boutique and spa cabana that has a pink and grey exterior and offers four signature treatments that use Dior skincare products. Talk about self-care the Barbiecore way.

Bali will impose a tourist e-tax starting from 2024 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/bali-to-impose-tourist-e-tax-from-2024/ Sun, 16 Jul 2023 07:00:25 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1884323 bali tax

Planning a trip to Bali next year? Well, it turns out that you will have to pay a 150,000 rupiah (THB 346) tax to preserve Bali’s culture, due to Bali’s new tourist tax.

The Indonesian resort haven of Bali will impose a 150,000 rupiah (THB 346) tax on tourists entering the ‘Island of Gods’ from next year to preserve its culture, officials said on July 12.

Tourist-dependent Bali attracts millions of foreign visitors annually and the beach-dotted island is trying to capitalise on its popularity to boost its coffers and protect its tropical allure.

All you need to know about Bali’s tourist tax

“The payment of a fee for foreign tourists applies only one time during their visit to Bali,” Governor I Wayan Koster told local lawmakers. The fee will have to be paid electronically and will apply to foreign tourists entering Bali from abroad or from other parts of Indonesia, he said.

The levy will not apply to domestic Indonesian tourists. More than two million tourists visited the island last year, according to official figures, as Bali rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic after imposing a zero-tolerance policy on rule-breakers.

When asked if the new tax would deter visitors, Koster said authorities did not believe numbers would dip.”It’s not a problem. We will use it for the environment, culture and we will build better quality infrastructure so travelling to Bali will be more comfortable and safe,” he told reporters.

The palm-fringed hotspot has vowed a crackdown on misbehaving tourists after a spate of incidents that have included acts of disrespect to the predominantly Hindu island’s culture. Bali immigration deported a Danish woman last month after she was filmed flashing to the public while riding a motorbike. A Russian woman was also booted out of the island in April for posting a nude photo of herself in front of a sacred tree. In June, the local government published a guide for tourists who wish to visit Bali after being pressed to do so by the island’s immigration office.

10 airports that use facial recognition instead of boarding passes https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/airports-that-use-facial-recognition-instead-of-boarding-pass/ Sun, 02 Jul 2023 02:00:33 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1881643

With the arrival of new technology, facial recognition has begun to replace boarding passes and passports at these airports. Read on for the full list of airports where you don’t need a boarding pass.

Travelling on an airplane is not an easy task. First, we need to check-in to get the boarding pass printed. Then, we need to carry our boarding pass to security and get cleared. Once we have cleared that, we still need to get our boarding pass checked again at the gate before we can enter our flight. These multiple levels of checking can be time-consuming, leading many people to miss their flights. But now, thanks to facial recognition and biometric boarding, a printed boarding pass has become unnecessary and obsolete.

With technology upgrading at a fast pace and new innovations taking place almost every day, airports are bringing new changes to help make travel smooth and easy for passengers. The pandemic forced airport authorities to go completely contactless. Smart check-in was introduced, security gates were completely digitised and more such steps were taken to make travel safe again. That’s not all, after the pandemic airports saw an increase in passenger traffic. These two factors echoed the need of streamlining a passenger’s journey from the airport’s entry to the boarding gate.

Now, facial recognition has been introduced at airports to make passengers’ experience not only contactless but also hassle-free! The human face is replacing boarding passes. Airports no longer need the passenger to show their passport and their boarding pass at the security check or the boarding gate, one simply needs to scan their face and they are good to go! No longer do travellers have to worry about misplacing it.

Here are 10 countries whose airports are replacing facial recognition with boarding pass

1 /10

Tokyo, Japan – Haneda International Airport & Narita International Airport

Haneda International Airport and Narita International Airport are the two major airports in Tokyo, Japan, that face the majority of passenger traffic. In July 2021, Tokyo International Air Terminal Corporation installed “Face Pass”, a facial recognition system that will allow passengers to board a flight without a boarding pass. Face Express kiosks have been installed at both airports, where passengers need to register their passports, get their photos clicked and fill in their flight information. Once this process is completed, you can head to the self-service bag drop, and pass through the security gate and boarding gate with your facial id.

India – Delhi, Bengaluru, Varanasi, Pune, Hyderabad & Kolkata Airport

Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi), Kempegowda International Airport (Bengaluru), Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (Varanasi), Pune International Airport, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Hyderabad), and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (Kolkata) are all digital now, thanks to DigiYatra.

The government launched DigiYatra, an app that aims to make your airport experience easy and comfortable. Once you have downloaded the app, you need to take a selfie and add your identification number (Aadhar credentials) and add boarding pass details. At the airport, you’ll need to use the e-gate to scan your face to pass through. The e-gates use Face Recognition System (FRS) to recognise the passenger, using the face as a boarding pass.

United Arab Emirates – Dubai International Airport & Abu Dhabi International Airport

UAE is famous for being a step ahead when it comes to technological advancement. Dubai International Airport no longer requires passengers to show their passports or boarding passes. They have started a biometric system that allows passengers to walk through the terminal by scanning their faces. Expats, Emiratis and visitors whose data has been with GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners) since 2019 can use this system. The airport has 122 smart gates that have been tested by more than 12 million passengers in 2022, reported Gulf News.

Abu Dhabi International Airport has started the first phase of the biometric boarding services. NEXT50, an Abu Dhabi-based tech company, is introducing artificial technology that will allow travellers to scan their faces to gain entry. You don’t need to have a printed boarding pass or an identity card. This technology is being deployed at selected immigration e-gates and boarding gates.

4 /10

Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur Internationa Airport

Being the largest and busiest airport in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur International Airport had announced that it will start using facial recognition to fasten the processing of passengers in 2021. From the beginning of 2022, the airport started implementing the technology.

The passengers first need to register themselves at the Enrolment Totem located at the Departure of the airport. For registration, passengers would need to scan the boarding pass and airport. After this is done, passengers only need to scan their faces to go through security and the boarding gates.

5 /10

Hong Kong – Hong Kong International Airport

Facial recognition has replaced document checking at Hong Kong International Airport too! Known as the “Single Token Travel Experience”, this technology started in 2019 onwards. Also known as Chek Lap Kok International Airport, the main airport of Hong Kong requires passengers to create a digital token by matching passengers’ biometric data with passport and flight details. The facial recognition system is installed at the e-security gate and the e-boarding gate, where the passenger’s face will be used to pass through smoothly and efficiently.

6 /10

France – Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport & Orly Airport

The major airports of Paris, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Orly Airport, are testing facial recognition for boarding passengers. The airports will be temporarily storing a passenger’s data like flight details, passport and photo. Facial recognition systems are installed at various gates of the airport that will allow passengers to pass through without a boarding pass. The testing is only taking place with passengers flying with Ari Caraibes and French Bee airlines.

7 /10

Spain – Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport

Aena, a Spanish company that manages over 40 airports in Spain, has started testing facial recognition for boarding passengers only at a particular gate of Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport. Passengers have to either register Aena’s app or via the facial recognition kiosk available at the airport. After the passenger is registered, cameras at the security and boarding gate will use facial recognition to let them pass through without showing a passport or boarding pass.

8 /10

United Kingdom – Heathrow Airport & Manchester Airport

Biometric boarding is available at Heathrow Airport and Manchester Airport; however, it is only for British Airways. Passengers flying from this British airline will have the facility to pass through the airport without using any physical documents. Every time a passenger will fly with British airways, they will have to register themselves at the airport so that the security and boarding gates can use facial recognition.

9 /10

Germany – Frankfurt Airport & Munich International Airport

People flying with Lufthansa Airlines will get to enjoy the benefits of biometric registration when flying to and from Frankfurt Airport and Munich International Airport. Other airlines within the airports will not be providing this quick and efficient process. Lufthansa flyers will have to register on the Lufthansa app with their photo and passport. This data will be saved in the app with a safety pin code to secure your details. At the airport, the passenger simply needs to scan their face at the respective gates to gain access.

USA

With many airports in the United States of America, it is airline carriers who have taken it as their mission to streamline the passengers’ experience at the airport. Delta Airlines, United Airlines and more American airlines are implementing biometric boarding for their passengers. But certain airlines are charging passengers to access the biometric boarding facilities at the airports. Passengers are to register on the airlines’ apps with their flight details, identity information and photo so that they can use facial recognition at the airport to smoothly cross all the gates.

New York City is the most expensive city for expats in 2023 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/new-york-singapore-in-worlds-most-expensive-cities-for-expats/ Thu, 08 Jun 2023 03:03:28 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1878600

It’s the concrete jungle where dreams are made of—as long as you can afford it, that is. New York City has ranked as the most expensive city for expats this year according to a list by ECA International.

Anyone with an idea of the cost of living in cities around the world knows that New York City (NYC) is one of the most expensive cities to live in even for Americans. But exactly where does it stand from the point-of-view of expats?

The Cost of Living Rankings for 2023 compiled by ECA International indicates that NYC is the most expensive city to live in for expatriates, living and working in the Big Apple.

The rising accommodation costs and inflation have been cited as the reasons why NYC topped the list, ending the four-year reign of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) at the No.1 spot.

Apart from Hong Kong, Singapore was the other Asian destination in the top five. Singapore climbed eight places from its 2022 ranking to end up as the fifth most expensive city for expats.

ECA International is a mobility solutions company. Its 2023 report takes into account rental costs in areas populated by expats as well as the cost of consumer goods and services. A total of 207 across 120 countries and territories around the world have been ranked.

Rise in rankings for Asian cities

Turkish capital Istanbul was the biggest climber in the list, rising 95 places to 108th in the 2023 rankings. The report cites President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s economic policies as one of the major reasons behind the increased cost of living, with an 80 per cent rise in prices.

Referring to Singapore, a crown gem of Southeast Asia in terms of both economic might and social achievements, the report said that the cost of living in the city-state rose on the back of skyrocketing rents. Interestingly, the rent factor was also the reason why Singapore topped a list compiled by Urban Land Institute (ULI) Asia Pacific Centre for Housing in May 2023. That report revealed that the cost of private homes and their rent were the highest in Singapore across the Asia-Pacific region.

Meanwhile, the growing numbers of Russian expats in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) pushed the rents in the city up by almost 33 per cent. Due to this, Dubai ranked 12th on ECA International’s 2023 list — a jump of 11 places.

Not all Asian cities witnessed a rise. Comparatively lower inflation rates and a weaker Yuan brought the cost of living in Chinese cities down, consequently leading to a fall in their rankings. These include Shanghai, Guangzhou, and the capital city Beijing.

Some European cities fall but US cities become costlier

Weaker currencies and lower inflation rates led to a fall in the cost of living in French, Norwegian and Swedish cities. But most other European cities climbed in rankings, with Geneva and London maintaining their hold on the third and fourth places, respectively, from last year.

Apart from NYC, high inflation and a strong dollar also pushed the cost of living in other US cities up. Los Angeles and Chicago were in the top 20 while San Francisco entered the top 10 in seventh place.

Air New Zealand is weighing passengers before they board international flights https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/air-new-zealand-is-weighing-passengers-before-boarding/ Sun, 04 Jun 2023 02:00:41 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1877845

Okay, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. Air New Zealand is weighing its passengers for safety reasons and the info is completely anonymous.

As per reports, the air carrier company aims to weigh 10,000 passengers between May 31 and July 2. The weights are being recorded as part of a month-long survey that the airline is conducting. This is to allow pilots to understand the weight and balance of the aircraft before take-off in a better way.

[Hero and featured image credit: Daniel Norris/Unsplash]

Why is Air New Zealand weighing its passengers?

air new zealand

In a statement, spokesperson Alastair James said, “We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft — from the cargo to the meals onboard, to the luggage in the hold.” He added that for customers, cabin bags and airline crew, average weights are used. Passengers can be rest assured that participation in the survey is voluntary, and no one, including the airline staff, can see the individual’s weight, making it completely anonymous. He says, “We know stepping on the scales can be daunting. We want to reassure our customers there is no visible display anywhere,” writes BBC.

Air New Zealand had earlier weighed its domestic passengers in 2021. However, given the pandemic, the weigh-in of international travellers got delayed, state reports.

According to the update on the Air New Zealand website, knowing the weight of everything (including people) onboard is part of the safety measures. Reports add that these numbers are required by the nation’s Civil Aviation Authority. Under its rules, airlines have various ways to get an average passenger weight. This includes surveys (like Air New Zealand is carrying out), or accepting a standard weight that the authority has set.

Currently, the standard weight set by the Authority for those aged 13 or more is 86 kg, including carry-on luggage. This weight was last changed in 2004, when the number was 77 kg, add reports.

Pride events across the globe to be gay at in 2023 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/pride-events-2023/ Sat, 03 Jun 2023 10:30:41 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1877844

LGBTQ+ Pride Month: Brief history and relevance

pride events 2023

The history of Pride Month dates back to June 1969 when the New York Police Department (NYPD) conducted a series of spontaneous raids on the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the Greenwich Village near Manhattan. As members of the community fought back against discrimination, it catalysed the fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the United States. Soon, African-American and Latinx transgender activists took to the streets, condemning police brutality based on sexual orientation.

Popularly known as the Stonewall Riots, this became an important landmark in the timeline of the LGBTQ+ cause. Activist Craig Schoonmaker coined the term ‘Pride’ on the first anniversary of the riots. Opening up about it in a 2015 podcast with the Allusionist, he said, “I authored the word ‘pride’ for gay pride … [my] first thought was ‘Gay Power.’ I didn’t like that, so proposed gay pride. There’s very little chance for people in the world to have power. People did not have power then; even now, we only have some. But anyone can have pride in themselves, and that would make them happier as people, and produce the movement likely to produce change.”

What kick-started in the US, soon spread all over the world. As a result, the month of June came to be recognised as the cornerstone of the queer movement.

Air New Zealand said in a statement that the main Skynest cabin will be constructed in the country and fitted on the carrier’s Boeing 787 aircraft in Boeing facilities outside New Zealand.

As per Leanne Geraghty, Air New Zealand chief customer and sales officer, the design of Skynest spanned five years and 170,000 hours.

Geraghty said that it “will revolutionise the in-flight experience for Economy passengers.”

Features of Skynest

Located between Premium Economy and Economy sections of Air New Zealand’s long-haul flights, each of the six pods in Skynest will come with sheets, blanket, full-size pillow, and ear plugs. The pods are fitted with separate reading light and lighting designed for rest.

They also have a personal USB outlet and ventilation outlet. A seatbelt in each pod will keep flyers secure to their bunk beds.

Only one session per passenger

The carrier said in its statement that Skynest facility will be available for each passenger for one session depending on availability. Each member of a family travelling on the same ticket will also get a single session.

There will be a 30-minute transition time between each session, during which the bedding will be changed.

Skynest pod availability and payment details

Air New Zealand will start offering the Skynest facility on its Auckland-New York and Auckland-Chicago routes. Both are ultra-long-haul routes and take over 15 hours in flight time.

“North America is the perfect market for Skynest, as it has a premium segment that values comfort and sleep during long-haul travel,” Geraghty said.

According to the statement, flyers may have to pay between USD 250 to USD 380 for four hours. But the exact price hasn’t been set formally.

Bookings will be available from September 2024.

Blackpink in your air-ea: the K-pop girl group’s faces are now on one of Korean Air’s planes https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/entertainment/celebrities/korean-air-blackpink-plane/ Tue, 09 May 2023 08:15:09 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1875014 korean air blackpink

One of the most famous girl groups in the world can add another achievement to their already long list as Korean Air has unveiled a plane with a Blackpink design.

The indicators of when you’ve finally made it in life can vary. For some, it might be getting your book published. For others, it may be having a million in your account. But if your face is on the side of a major airline’s plane, that’s an undeniable sign you’ve made it in life.

Blackpink, arguably the biggest K-pop girl group in the world, needs no introduction nor does it need anything else to boost their popularity. But Korean Air has decided to pay homage to the girl group and possibly one of the main ambassadors of Korean culture and music to the world by dedicating a special plane with all the members featured on the side.

Korean Air unveils their Blackpink plane

The Blackpink-themed plane was unveiled by Korean Air vice president Cho Won Tae and South Korean Prime Minister Han Deok Soo. The plane was made to promote the city of Busan’s candidacy to host Expo 2030, a world’s fair that is set to happen within the aforementioned year. Busan is facing off against other cities like Riyadh, Rome, and Odessa, with the host city set to be confirmed sometime this year.

Korean Air hasn’t revealed whether the plane will be available for domestic or international flights—or even if it will be utilised for commercial use at all. The publicity event, which unveiled the plane, had a number of Korean Air crew take pictures alongside the specially designed  B777-300. But aside from that, the event seemed to be just a photo op.

We can hope though that the plane would at least be available for the public to take pictures with, or if we can dream a little more, maybe Korean Air would actually have a full Blackpink-themed flight. What’s better than getting on a flight decked out in Blackpink decor with a free light stick for each passenger and a possible surprise appearance from the girls? Maybe Jennie will be the one actually flying the plane. That was a joke… maybe.

What will travel look like in 2070? A Future Travel Report https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/future-travel-report-what-will-travel-look-like-in-2070/ Sat, 15 Apr 2023 07:00:40 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1872568 future travel

What will your passport look like in the future? How will 3D printing help hotels? And what role will self-driving vehicles play in future travel? A recent report has envisioned what travel will look like in 2070, and it sounds wild.

While a report predicting how we’ll travel in 2070 envisions that our “heartbeat signatures” could replace our passports, the analysis published by Easyjet also demonstrates how new technologies can be useful for reinventing the tourism industry to become more sustainable.

What will future travel look like in the year 2070? A few ideas

An itinerary’s carbon footprint, the ecological impact of a hotel stay, managing the flow of visitors to a popular destination: these are some of the numerous challenges the world of tourism is facing as it looks upon the future. Which is why it’s interesting to delve into the report published by Easyjet to identify the innovations that could help shape a more sustainable approach to travel by 2070. This detailed analysis, developed with the help of scientists and engineering and aerospace innovation experts, includes some headline-making projects such as the use of a cardiac signature as a passport, thus relegating biometric fingerprint and iris recognition to the past. Another idea outlined in the report suggests that in the future ergonomic airplane seats could adapt to our body shape, size and even temperature, which is a very appealing prospect.

The usefulness of 3D-printing

It’s clear that one of the major challenges of travel for the future is about improving comfort, but the issue of sustainability is also key and it too can’t be discussed without looking at new technologies. For instance, 3D-printing could make traveling with a suitcase an obsolete practice. All we’d have to do is tell our hotel what size we wear to get suitable, customised clothes to wear during our stay. It’s an idea that could lower the carbon footprint in more than one way: not only would it reduce transport costs, it could also cut back on the phenomenon of buying clothes specifically to be worn on a short vacation. The experts envisage that the material of these clothes could be recycled, or even reworked for another traveler.

3D printing could also come in handy for mealtime. Hotels could significantly reduce the food waste generated by vast breakfast buffets by relying instead on culinary robots that instantly prepare our orders.

More autonomous travellers?

After we get off the train or the plane, we’ll no longer have to search for a bus to take us to our hotel. A self-driving vehicle would be ready to take us to our destination, while the technology-packed vehicle would at the same time be able to send information to the hotel regarding our imminent arrival. No more waiting in a line at the hotel’s front desk to check in.

Biometric authentication

In fact guests might no longer have to deal with hotel employees at all in order to receive any kind of room key, electronic or not; some form of biometric authentication could facilitate opening the door. As for getting around throughout the stay, it would also be a matter of relying on self-driving vehicles including perhaps some e-VTOL air taxis.

Reusable human energy

Meanwhile hotels could even be “human-powered.” While currently many hotels are adding photovoltaic panels for solar energy to heat rooms and swimming pools, in the future hotels could “harvest energy from guests’ footsteps to generate power.” In fact, a passenger walkway project in Abu Dhabi International Airport employed just such a system, capturing the energy produced by travelers’ footsteps, and converting it into off-grid energy used to power local LED lighting.

Where hotel constructions fits in

Finally, hotel construction could be less costly for the planet if they could be easily reconfigured to meet each guest’s particular needs. Smart rooms would have the configurations to accommodate the visiting party, either as a double or single room with modular walls. Meanwhile rooms would also already be programmed for the guest’s desired mattress firmness and ambient temperature.

Which airline has the best economy class seats? https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/airlines-best-economy-seats/ Thu, 23 Mar 2023 10:00:57 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1869839 worlds best economy class seats

Strapped for cash and can only afford economy seats on a long-haul flight? These are some of the airlines with best economy seats that give you bang for your buck.

The thought of flying economy class on a long-haul flight triggers a degree of panic. No one wants to fly for hours cramped between seats with not enough legroom to stretch. But some airlines offer economy seats so luxurious that many would be tempted to fly again and again in the same class.

Of course, flying business class, or first class as it is also known, is something that anyone would want to experience when flying long distances. Yet, there is always a possibility of not being able to book a seat on time. To save travellers the trouble, some international carriers make sure that those flying in economy class on a long-distance flight experience as much comfort as possible.

This doesn’t mean that there will be private cabins or seats that can be converted into full beds, though. These flights simply have wider seats than any other airline in economy class, along with some special in-flight amenities and food, which, in some cases, is typically the same as it is in first class.

It is noteworthy that besides the airline, passengers should also take note of the type of aircraft they would be flying economy. This is because airlines operate multiple aircraft in their fleet. Depending on the manufacturer, things such as space between rows and width of seats will be different in each. For instance, the economy class of Airbus 350 has wider seats than the same class in Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 — even though all three are wide-bodied aircraft. This is where comfort comes into the picture.

The best economy class in long-haul airlines

Japan Airlines

Imagine sipping the highest quality ume-shu (plum wine) or sake with Japanese Soba noodles on a long-haul flight in economy class. That’s what Japan Airlines delivers to its flyers. The seats are among the widest in the industry and the space between rows is also fairly wide.

Additionally, flying in a Boeing 787 Dreamliner of Japan Airlines would make flyers notice how different the carrier is from many other airliners operating the same aircraft. The Dreamliner is famous for its low-cabin altitude that helps reduce jet lag and has auto-dimming windows that make external viewing better. But it is not as famous as other aircraft for its narrower seats.

Besides that, the Dreamliner of Japan Airlines is the only one of its kind where the economy seating follows a 2-4-2 configuration instead of the 3-3-3 configuration in Dreamliner aircraft of other carriers. This means that there are only eight seats abreast in the Japan Airlines variant as against nine in others, resulting in wider seats than the others.

Singapore Airlines

Service is what makes the economy class of Singapore Airlines stand out from the rest. However, this is expected of the flag carrier of the country whose international airport has been a consistent topper on the list of the world’s best airports.

In fact, the service is so sophisticated that many equate it to the treatment passengers get in business class, which was ranked the best in the world by Skytrax in 2022. In addition to toothbrushes and toothpaste, passengers flying on economy-class seats receive an amenity kit containing eye shades and socks to ensure they have luxurious sleep during the long-distance flight.

The world-famous Singapore sling or any other premixed cocktail can be ordered by flyers in all cabins with meals. Irrespective of where they are seated, the service extends to all passengers on board the aircraft.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways

One of the world’s best airlines, Qatar Airways not only offers one of the best first-class travel experiences but also has an economy class that is certainly among the finest across the globe.

Besides the unlimited snacks and drinks during the flight, passengers are given three meal choices to select from a menu card. They are provided with a pillow and fleece-lined blanket to catch forty winks before they land at the destination. Qatar Airways also provides socks, eye masks and Institut Karite Paris lip balm to ensure that their flyers feel fresh when the journey is over.

Emirates

The double-decker Airbus A380 is among Emirates’ wide-bodied aircraft fleet. The Airbus A380 is the world’s largest passenger aircraft and is famous for the exceptional luxury it offers to flyers.

The economy seats of the Airbus A380 in Emirates measure 18 inches in width. Seats have screens on which passengers can watch any of the over 5,000 channels for their entertainment.

In August 2022, Emirates announced that it is upgrading the premium economy seats and other classes in its fleet of 67 Airbus A380 and 53 Boeing 777 aircraft.

On the flight, economy passengers get an amenity kit containing the necessary items for travel, including socks and a bookmark for those who prefer reading while travelling.

What makes Emirates economy flight special is that flyers can pre-order a bottle of Moët and a chocolate cake just in case there is a need to celebrate a special occasion on board.

All Nippon Airways (ANA)

ANA

Japan’s ANA is widely hailed as one of the best airlines in the world, and it lives up to its reputation when it comes to economy-class passengers, too. Being a direct competitor of Japan Airlines, the first factor that passengers would note is the distance between rows. It isn’t as wide as Japan Airlines, but at 86 cm is still wider than many other airliners.

And if flying between Tokyo and Honolulu on ANA’s Airbus A380, flyers can have the luxury of a single couch seat by combining up to four seats.

Staying true to the high degree and ideals of Japanese customer service, ANA ensures that its economy-class seats receive the finest of luxurious treatments available in the industry. They can go for high-end wines or sake and combine it with dishes such as Udon noodles or grilled red rockfish teriyaki. When flying out of Japan, there is an option to pay for a pre-order gourmet meal — a service that is available in business class.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines

When it comes to offering world-class amenities in economy class, Turkish Airlines is no different from other luxury service providers. However, what makes the national carrier of Turkey different is the onboard cuisine.

Indeed, food is perhaps the finest in any economy class anywhere in the world. For instance, flyers can take their pick from a wide range of dishes, including cheese pies, baba ghanoush, hummus and dried apricot mousse. And the taste of virgin olive oil in delicious salads with their lemon dressing is simply unforgettable.

Evergreen Airways (EVA)

The economy class in the Taiwanese airliner may not come with seats as wide as in ANA or cuisines as fine as those offered by Turkish Airlines, but some amenities certainly make the flying experience in this economy class more luxurious than most of the other airlines not mentioned in this list.

Instead of plastic cutlery, the airline offers metal spoons, forks and other items for a more comfortable eating experience. The seats have 12-inch-wide screens, which make the in-flight entertainment more immersive.

Of course, they don’t provide the business-class Salvatore Ferragamo amenity kits and pyjamas to economy-class passengers, but eye masks and slippers are there for everyone. Additionally, the legroom in the EVA aircraft is more spacious than the average in the industry.

The world’s happiest countries have been unveiled, guess where Thailand ranks https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/worlds-happiest-countries-2023-finland-thailand/ Tue, 21 Mar 2023 08:16:56 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1869543 finland happiest country in the world thailand ranks at 60

Spoiler alert: Thailand doesn’t rank in the top 50 at all. The annual UN-sponsored happiness index for the happiest countries in the world was unveiled on Monday. For the sixth year running, Finland was named the world’s happiest country.

With thousands of lakes and near endless forests, the Nordic country is known for its extensive welfare system, high trust in authorities and low levels of inequality among its 5.5 million inhabitants.

While Ukraine’s ranking improved from 98 to 92 this year, despite the Russian invasion, its overall score fell from 5.084 to 5.071, on a scale of zero to 10.

Professor Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, an editor of the report, said there had been an “extraordinary rise in fellow feeling across Ukraine” despite what the report called a “magnitude of suffering and damage in Ukraine” since the 2022 invasion.

Last year “benevolence grew sharply in Ukraine but fell in Russia,” the report found, referring to acts like helping strangers or making donations.

The report also cited a “much stronger sense of common purpose, benevolence and trust in Ukrainian leadership” than after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Northern Europe once again dominated the top spots — with Denmark in second place followed by Iceland.

Israel occupied fourth position, up five spots from last year.

While the same countries typically top the list each year, Baltic countries are rising rapidly towards Western European levels, the authors said.

Knocking France off the 20th spot, Lithuania became the only new country in the top 20 with Estonia in at number 31, up from 66 in 2017.

War-scarred Afghanistan, which has occupied the bottom spot on the table since 2020, saw its humanitarian crisis deepen since the Taliban government took power in 2021 following the US-led military pullout.

The World Happiness Report, first published in 2012, is based on people’s own assessment of their happiness, as well as economic and social data.

The report considers six key factors: social support, income, health, freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption.

It assigns a happiness score based on an average of data over a three-year period.

Q&A: Fifi, the dog that flew business class from Hong Kong to Paris and went viral https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/interview-fifi-dog-business-class-from-hong-kong-to-paris-viral-video/ Mon, 20 Mar 2023 06:35:07 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1868882 fifi dog business class hong kong paris viral video

We’ve asked humans many times about their in-flight routines, and yet humans aren’t the only mammals to board a plane. When Fifi, a jet-setting dachshund, went viral earlier this month for flying business class in grand style, we knew we had to get the inside scoop.

What is it like to lead a life of luxury on four paws? There’s no dog better to ask than Fifi, a four-year old dachshund who travels the world with her mother, Helen Rosalie. The dog mum and dog-friendly travel influencer went viral earlier this year, when a clip of Fifi was shared the world over. It showed the adorable therapy dog fast asleep in a business class bed, tucked under a business class duvet, and resting her little head on a business class pillow. Even those of us who only know the sweet embrace of an aisle seat and blood clots in economy, felt the feels watching this clip.

Meet Fifi, the dachshund that flew business class from Hong Kong to Paris

The video garnered plenty of attention from pet parents around the globe, and Helen has since shared a wealth of knowledge about travelling with pets. Which airlines provide the best service? What are the requirements and restrictions? And where can your pet use the toilet when in transit?

Nevertheless, fame comes with a price, and not everyone has been supportive. Netizens were fast to bite back at the pet parent for spoiling her dog with a privileged lifestyle, and questioning whether pets should be allowed to fly business class in the first place.

It’s an interesting subject that has arisen only in recent years, as the pet service industry becomes evermore powerful, and some, like Helen, view their pets as real extensions of their families. In fact, to clap back at all the haters, Helen has described Fifi as her “daughter.”

So long as the conversation keeps on growing, we wanted to cut through the noise and speak directly to the star of the hour. What does a pupper’s in-flight routine look like? Is there such a thing as doggie champagne? And how do our furry friends deal with jet lag? Read on for all of Fifi’s answers, as well as her super insightful travel tips should you be considering flying business class with your best bud, too.

An interview with Fifi, on what it’s like to be a fierce and fabulous frequent flier dog

fifilittledarling viral dog business class flight
fifilittledarling viral dog business class flight
fifi viral dog business class

Hi Fifi, it’s so lovely to chat with you. You’ve gone viral with your latest in-flight video. Tell us, were you always this fabulous?

🐾  Lovely to chat to you too! Yes I’ve always been this fabulous and I have high expectations, being a stubborn little sausage dog I know how to get everything I want, it’s like I put a spell on humans with my puppy eyes [does the puppy eyes].

As a jet-setting dog, what are a few of your travel essentials? Do you have an in-flight routine?

🐾 My travel essentials are:

-My Hermès dog collar and Apple Air Tag. I’m small and so Mum never wants to lose me, even in the sky.
-Cosy blankets. I love to have lots of layers to keep warm.
-Portable water bowl.
-Tasty liver paste from Arden Grange which we import from Britain.
-My travel bag. I love it — it fits perfectly on top of Mum’s hand luggage suitcase so I can be wheeled around.

What’s your go-to airport outfit?

🐾 My ultimate travel outfit is my customised made-to-measure knitted jumper from Knits By Tee, which has a big “F” for “Fabulous,” and I guess it’s my name too.

What is your favourite movie to watch on board? How do you pass the time on long haul flights?

🐾 I don’t have time to watch movies whilst on board as I’m too busy sleeping — as soon as we take off I’ve passed out. The airplane sounds are like a relaxing white noise for me and they make me sleepy! Mum did watch a movie called Dog apparently. She said it was good, but not as good as me.

How’s the dog food in business class? Do you sip Dog Pawrignon Champagne?

🐾 Mum let me have some of her meat off her antipasto, because she’s really weird and doesn’t eat meat. However, I like to do a cleanse on the flight and not consume too much for obvious reasons [glances quietly over at dog poop bags]. I hope one day there will be a grassy area where we can run around and do our business instead of holding our bladders in business!

How do you fight jet lag after landing? Is there such a thing in your world?

🐾 Jet lag is really fun! You wake up Mum and Dad when it’s still dark and get extra time with them!

For all the other puppers out there reading this and thinking about flying business, what are some tips you can share?

🐾 I can share these tips:

-Plan your trip in advance.
-Do your research and learn about the airline you are flying, as they all have different requirements.
-Pack lots of pee pads and anti bacterial wipes, as some airports don’t have pet relief areas.
-Limit water and food before the flight.
-Dress warm because airplanes can be really cold! I’m used to the tropics in Hong Kong, but when I landed it Paris my paws were freezing and I refused to walk. I demanded to be carried.

Lastly, what are your upcoming travel plans? In which business class cabin could we catch you snoozing next?

🐾 We are now in the USA and travelling with pets in the cabin is super easy. We are based in South Carolina and have trips planned to Miami and LA soon.

Dog Dad is a private jet captain and I hope he can squeeze me onto one of his flights — there are too many people in business making noises and waking me up when I’m trying to rest.

Ah, to be in the one pawcent. You can follow more of Fifi’s adventures over on Fifi Little Darling on Instagram.

Introducing Neom, a new mega city being built in Saudi Arabia https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/neom-saudi-arabia/ Wed, 22 Feb 2023 09:09:16 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1865914

No, that’s not the sound of a car speeding past. That’s Neom, a brand new mega city that is being built right now in Saudi Arabia. Here’s everything we know about it.

Neom, a USD 500-billion megalopolis in Saudi Arabia, has partially started functioning on renewable energy and will entirely function on it soon. Neom, which is approximately 33 times the size of New York City, is expected to have a population of nine million by 2045, as per reports.

Saudi Arabia’s Neom intends to begin operations with 50 percent renewable energy before converting it to 100 percent renewable energy by 2030, shared Thorsten Schwarz, Grid Technology and Projects Executive Director, Neom, at a panel last year, according to CNBC.

More about Neom and its infrastructure

Amenities to be provided by Neom

Shopping centres, housing complexes, public parks, pedestrian areas, playgrounds, schools and workplaces will be located inside this massive megacity, surrounded on both sides by tall mirror walls.

The futuristic city will have flying cabs instead of motorcycles or cars to avoid carbon emissions. However, doorstep pickup and delivery will be available.

According to project architects, The Line, a 200-metre-wide, 170-kilometre-long and 500-metre-high urban horizontal skyscraper, will have a distinctive personality owing to its external mirror facade. In addition to this, a high-speed train with a 20-minute end-to-end transit time will be accessible within a five-minute walk.

How will Neom achieve this milestone?

Neom has a sister concern called ENOWA, which will offer clean drinking water and sustainable energy to the desert metropolis. The area aims to generate 40GW of green energy from solar and wind sources. In order to address additional needs, Neom will also utilise hydrogen-based power generation.

The planned desalination plant, which will be used to supply the city with fresh water, will be one of the larger energy consumers in the city. The desalination plant and hydrogen plant will be housed in Neom’s Oxagon, a floating industrial complex spanning 7 kilometres that will also house the 170-kilometre linear city, The Line.

Jens Madrien, CEO of ENOWA, told Korea Times in an interview, “Neom will be the world’s first large-scale renewable energy system and climate-positive society. It will be a global hub for clean energy generation, manufacturing, technology, research, and innovation. Once operational, Neom will be powered by 100 percent renewable, clean energy, including solar, wind, hydrogen, and green hydrogen-based energy.”

Thailand to introduce a THB 300 tourist fee from June 2023 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/thailand-to-introduce-thb-300-tourist-fee/ Wed, 11 Jan 2023 16:20:16 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1860515 thailand tourist fee 2023

After a hot “will-they-won’t-they” over vaccination requirements to enter Thailand, the country is now working on another entry regulation. From June 2023, Thailand is looking to introduce a THB 300 tourist fee, as was discussed in a meeting today.

The proposal is still subject to cabinet approval, and will be subject only to tourist arrivals, not locals or foreigners with work permits and border passes.

What a week for Thailand travel requirements. First you needed vaccination proof, then you needed Covid-19 insurance. Thailand to introduce a THB 300 tourist fee

The THB 300 tourist fee may sound familiar to those who have kept an eye on Thailand’s travel news in the last year.

Almost exactly a year ago, there was talk about a “sustainability fee” which would be charged to tourists entering the country. This went quiet for the months that followed, but now it seems to have returned with a new moniker and fresh excitement.

This time around, the fee is said to support accidents in which visitors to Thailand are involved, and help develop tourist destinations, according to a meeting held today. Luckily, locals and residents won’t be subjected to the fee.

Who has to pay the THB 300 tourist fee, and who doesn’t?

According to Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, “fees won’t be collected from foreigners with work permits and border passes.” This leaves many groups exempt from the fee, with a sharper focus on international arrivals.

The timing of the tourist fee proposal is interesting, as tourism to Thailand has been on the rise in the last months, with increasing numbers expected with the reopening of China. Ratchakitprakarn states that Thailand is expecting 25 million tourist arrivals this year.

At the time of writing, the tourist fee proposal is still subject to cabinet approval.

Okay, so do you need to be vaccinated to fly to Thailand or not? https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/thailand-vaccination-requirements-huh/ Mon, 09 Jan 2023 10:11:28 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1860145

Thailand’s current vaccination requirements are as “will they, won’t they” as Ross and Rachel on Friends. Here’s the update on whether you need to be jabbed or not to enter the Kingdom.

Ah, the Thai government. Best known for changing policies at a moment’s notice and doing so only for the sake of optics. Heck, they started the year off with the announcement that they’ll be spending upwards of THB30 million just to change the sign on a train station. So it isn’t surprising, then, that after days of speculation, they changed the policy regarding vaccination requirements for tourists—again. And again.

[Hero and Featured Image Credit: Friends via Netflix]

Is Thailand’s vaccination requirement on a break or gone for good?

The complete reversal of the “zero Covid” policy in China and their opening of borders sparked worry worldwide. It’s a major cause of concern for Thailand since it welcomes many Chinese tourists every year, or at least it did pre-pandemic. China announced that its borders would reopen on Sunday and Thailand was set to welcome Chinese tourists again, but the question was whether there would be any restrictions on travellers from China as other countries have announced.

At first, it seemed like nothing would be changed. Requirements for entry, including a negative test and health insurance, were all dropped last October. But on Saturday, the government surprised the nation much as a father returning from buying milk after 25 years: yes, you would need to be vaccinated. And no, this isn’t going to be discriminatory, assured Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Sure, Anutin.

The latest update

The policy took effect for all flights arriving on Monday, 1am onwards. Well, in just over 12 hours, that policy has now changed again: no vaccinations required. Everyone is free to enter. “Showing proof of vaccination would be cumbersome and inconvenient, and so the group’s decision is that it is unnecessary,” Anutin said according to Reuters.

At this point, anything can happen. We’re in post-break-up Ross and Rachel where they’re on and off right now, and do remember they ended up having a baby and Rachel had a strange fling with Joey. So yes, anything can happen. Be on the lookout for more updates.

What you need to know before travelling to China from January https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/china-travel-guidelines-testing-quarantine-rules/ Sun, 01 Jan 2023 04:30:31 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1859383 what to know before travelling to china

Starting January 8, China will drop its strict quarantine requirements for international travellers. Here’s what you need to know before travelling there.

The loosening of guidelines has unleashed massive pent-up demand. Immediately, bookings for flights to Beijing and Shanghai surged as people planned long-delayed business trips and family reunions. In addition, Singapore Airlines declared that it would reinstate its Singapore-to-Beijing operations for the first time since 2020. If a trip to China is in the pipeline, here’s everything you need to know.

China travel guidelines: Everything to know

Nucleic Acid test requirement

Passengers on inbound flights to China will need to provide a negative PCR test taken 48 hours before departure. Previously, those travelling to China had to take two PCR tests. The change would reverse its long-standing policy of mandating incoming travellers to quarantine for five days at the hotel, followed by three days at home.

Health code

Before departure, China-bound passengers will no longer need to acquire a health code from the Chinese Embassy or Consulates General.

Health declaration to China customs

Passengers headed to China must declare the negative test result to China Customs by filling out the Health Declaration Form. The health declaration form is available on the Wechat mini program of China Customs, the Chinaport web page, and the China Customs APP.

What should you do if you test positive?

Passengers exhibiting symptoms such as fever detected by China Customs must take an antigen test. Those who test positive must self-quarantine at their respective hotels and homes. Earlier this month, the Chinese authorities announced that COVID positive patients with mild or no symptoms can now isolate at home rather than at state facilities.

Can you take the public transport and visit public places in China?

Along with the travel guidelines, China eased the RT-PCR rules early in December. As a result, you will no longer need an RT-PCR test to enter any public place.  Many businesses have fully reopened in Beijing. As a result, the government announced that commuters would no longer need to show a negative test result to use public transport. If you are travelling to Shanghai, you will be allowed to enter outdoor venues such as parks and tourist attractions without testing requirements.

Lifting quarantine rules only end some obstacles to travel to China. Many details still need to be clarified. For example, the government has yet to say if it will start reissuing tourist visas. However, officials said they would optimise the ability of foreigners to apply for business and study visas.

Sure, citizens met China’s partial reopening with an outpouring of joy and relief. But it is worth noting that China’s abrupt policy U-turn dropped nearly all its domestic COVID curbs. The move has left hospitals scrambling to cope.

China to reopen borders and end quarantine from 8 January https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/china-to-reopen-borders-end-quarantine-for-travellers/ Tue, 27 Dec 2022 12:02:04 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1859003 china reopens borders january

China is to reopen its borders. Starting 8 January 2023, visitors to China will no longer need to quarantine. This marks a significant step towards the loosening of its zero-COVID policy.

The decision was taken late on 26 December 2022 by the National Health Commission (NHA).

According to reports, the NHA said in a statement that the country’s COVID-19 management policy will be lowered from the current Category A to the less strict Category B.

Under the current policy, inbound travellers to China are required to spend five days in mandatory quarantine in a government-supervised facility followed by three days of home isolation.

Once the new border rules are implemented in China, inbound passengers will have to only produce a negative test result obtained within 48 hours of boarding.

As per Nikkei Asia, they will be subject to “routine checkup” at the customs. There won’t be any special restrictions imposed on them if there are no signs of illness and their health declarations are normal.

The NHC also announced that mass PCR testing and centralised quarantine will be ended. Though in-flight masks will remain a requirement, restrictions on the number of international flights will be scrapped. Land and water entry ports will also be gradually reopened.

For outbound travellers, NHC reportedly said that people will be able to go abroad “in an orderly manner.”

More technical changes mark a move towards easing of restrictions

Changes in the management of the coronavirus in China indicate that the country is increasingly moving away from its strict system.

South China Morning Post reports that the NHC stopped announcing daily COVID-19 cases on 25 December and passed on the responsibility to a disease control agency.

Citing a senior hospital administrator in Xiamen, the SCMP reports that the NHC has said that the virus be officially called “novel coronavirus infection” instead of the present “novel coronavirus pneumonia.”

“The name change is subtle but important,” the administrator told SCMP.

Citing sources, the report also says that Hong Kong, whose top officials held a meeting on 25 December, might take the first steps towards the re-opening of the city’s border with the mainland in January.

Economy hit, cases rising

China’s zero-COVID policy, imposed three years ago, has reportedly left its economy battered.

Meanwhile, major protests against the government led by President Xi Jinping broke out across the country in November.

Earlier in December, the government ended most of its domestic restrictions in a move that surprised many. But China is now dealing with its worst coronavirus outbreak.

Reports suggest that hospitals across the mainland are finding it difficult to cope with the massive influx of new infections which has left many dead.

At these airports, you don’t need boarding passes https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/airports-facial-recognition/ Thu, 15 Dec 2022 10:09:33 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1857443

These state-of-the-art/Skynet-esque airports use facial recognition instead of boarding passes. Time to gear up for the robot apocalypse!

The human face is replacing boarding passes and passports. Airports no longer need the passenger to show their passport and their boarding pass at the security check or the boarding gate, one simply needs to scan their face and they are good to go! No longer do travellers have to worry about misplacing their boarding pass or passport.

Here are 10 countries whose airports are replacing facial recognition with boarding pass:

1 /10

Tokyo, Japan – Haneda International Airport & Narita International Airport

Haneda International Airport and Narita International Airport are the two major airports in Tokyo, Japan that face the majority of passenger traffic. In July 2021, Tokyo International Air Terminal Corporation installed “Face Pass”, a facial recognition system that will allow passengers to board a flight without a boarding pass. Face Express kiosks have been installed at both airports where passengers need to register their passports, get their photos clicked and fill in their flight information. Once this process is completed, you can head to the self-service bag drop, and pass through the security gate and boarding gate with your facial id.

2 /10

India – Indira Gandhi International Airport (Delhi), Kempegowda International Airport (Bengaluru) & Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (Varanasi)

Indira Gandhi International Airport, Kempegowda International Airport and Lal Bahudur Shastri International Airport are all going digital from December 2022. The government has launched Digi-Yatra, an app that aims at making your airport experience easy and comfortable. Once you have downloaded the app, you need to take a selfie and add your identification number (Aadhar credentials) and add boarding pass detail. At the airport, you’ll need to use the e-gate to scan your boarding pass and face to pass through. The e-gates use Face Recognition System (FRS) to recognise the passenger, using the face as a boarding pass. Now you can board a flight without a boarding pass.

United Arab Emirates – Dubai International Airport & Abu Dhabi International Airport

UAE is famous for being a step ahead when it comes to technological advancement. Emirates started an integrated biometric path at Dubai International Airport in 2020. With the aim to offer a contactless airport experience, passengers are supposed to register themselves for “The Smart Tunnel”. The tunnel uses your iris to recognise you and let you pass through.

The same is going to be implemented at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The advanced facial recognition technology is being tested in phases. The first phase is to be executed on Etihad Airways flights to the USA. The system is financed by Abu Dhabi Airports and delivered by NEXT50 (Abu Dhabi tech-based company).

10 /10

Hong Kong is finally easing its travel restrictions after two very long years of very strict regulations.

After two years of chopping and changing rules, the Hong Kong government announced that visitors to the city would no longer require to undergo the “0+3” medical surveillance period.

With this, Hong Kong ended travel-related Covid-19 restrictions, as the authorities had earlier lifted mandatory hotel quarantine for tourists.

As Hong Kong ends the amber health code requirement, visitors in the city can move around freely. This means that all incoming travellers testing negative can enter restaurants, gyms and beauty parlours. Additionally, residents will no longer need to scan QR codes with their “Leave Home Safe” app. However, they would still need to present their vaccination records to designated venues.

Travellers will receive a blue or red code

As Hong Kong scraps the rules, it effectively adopts the “0+0” regime. Arrivals will still need to take a PCR test upon arrival and on their third day in the city. They will also require taking the RAT test for three consecutive days. All incoming travellers who test negative upon arrival will receive a blue code allowing them to move freely in the city. However, arriving passengers testing positive for COVID will get a red health code and follow the usual isolation protocols.

As Hong Kong continues to reopen, the city has finally lifted its blanket restrictions on international travel. So finally, that long-awaited family reunion might be a reality for those outside the city. And for the rest of the world, travel to Hong Kong is back on. The move is great news for families hoping to travel during the Lunar New Year, which starts in January. The Lunar New Year is a popular holiday in Hong Kong, and the changes have been timed to help families make travel plans without additional requirements.

The world’s most expensive cities in 2022: New York and Singapore tie at the top https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/travel/news/worlds-most-expensive-cities-new-york-singapore-tie/ Fri, 02 Dec 2022 07:00:38 +0000 https://www.lifestyleasia.com/bk/?p=1855774 world's most expensive cities

Singapore has been on the list of the world’s most expensive cities eight times in the last ten years already, but this time New York joins it at the top.

New York and Singapore are now the world’s most expensive cities, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Worldwide Cost of Living survey. The survey that analyses the cost of living across the globe suggested that the prices soared by 8.1 percent in 2022, owing to the burgeoning inflation because of the Ukraine war and the soaring fuel prices.

Around 172 cities in the world were affected by inflation this year, according to the report.

Interestingly, Singapore has been on the list eight times in the last ten years but this time, New York has joined the top rank for the first time as the dollar remained strong throughout the year. Israel’s Tel Aviv which was at the top spot last year is on rank three this time.

How did Asian countries fare?

The overall inflation rate in the continent is around 4.5 percent which is less than the global number. Although, the country-wise performance is different. While Singapore did not leave its top spot in this category, six of the cities in China rose up the ranks with Shanghai being in the top 20. Japan, on the other hand, did fair as the interest rates stayed low with Tokyo and Osaka being dropped to 24th and 33rd positions respectively.

World’s most expensive city survey: What do the experts say?

Petrol prices soared by 22 percent in 2022. Not just fuel but even the cost of utilities and essential goods and electricity were high this year. Upasana Dutt, Head of Worldwide Cost of Living at EIU remarked, “The war in Ukraine, Western sanctions on Russia and China’s zero-covid policies have caused supply-chain problems that, combined with rising interest rates and exchange-rate shifts, have resulted in cost-of-living crisis across the world.”

She added, “We can clearly see the impact in this year’s index, with the average price rise across the 172 cities in our survey being the strongest we’ve seen in the 20 years for which we have digital data. We expect prices to start easing over the coming year as supply bottle-necks start to ease and slowing economies weigh on consumer demand.”
