Airport Authority Hong Kong announces THB 305 billion ‘Skytopia’ project

Here’s all we know about ‘Skytopia,’ Hong Kong’s ambitious plan to transform its international airport into a world-class destination.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) has officially announced the development of a top-of-the-class hub, Skytopia, which will redefine tourist experiences at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and surrounding areas. The ambitious project will unite commerce, art, culture, cuisine, and entertainment to yield a one-of-a-kind leisurely escape for locals and tourists alike. Here’s everything we know about the Skytopia project so far.

Hong Kong’s largest yacht bay to waterfront resorts, here’s a glimpse into Skytopia

Hong Kong’s Skytopia is poised to become a global hub for culture, commerce, and lifestyle. Here’s what the grand project worth HKD 70 billion is likely to entail:

  • Savour the nautical luxuries of life at Skytopia’s yacht bay — the biggest marina ever in Hong Kong — which will house about 600 berths.
  • An epicentre for global art commerce, Skytopia will create opportunities to create, appreciate, and trade artwork. It will also offer Hong Kong’s first-ever standalone storage facility for art, which will benefit galleries, museums, and collectors.
  • The hub will also launch water-based adventures, becoming Hong Kong’s biggest aquatic recreation area.
  • A sportstainment complex where visitors can indulge in various indoor and outdoor sports.
  • A plush resort offering waterfront views and diverse amenities. Skytopia also has plans to develop a 1.5-km-long CoveWalk and Piazza for serene and scenic strolls.
  • Visitors can even expect a ‘Jet Fresh Market’ retailing fresh gourmet sourced from around the world.
  • This destination will also witness the expansion of AsiaWorld Expo—Phase 2, which will house Hong Kong’s largest purpose-built indoor performance venue. With a seating capacity of 20,000, this site will host large-scale concerts and events.
  • Lastly, Skytopia will remain resolute in its commitment to sustainability by introducing an eco-friendly transport system, including automated car parks and autonomous vehicles.

“We envisage that HKIA will not be just a place for passengers to board their flights or a portal for entering Hong Kong. Our vision is to develop ‘SKYTOPIA’ into a landmark of its own and a world-leading destination, attracting visitors from within Hong Kong and the prosperous Greater Bay Area, as well as major markets in Asia and the rest of the world. We look forward to working with investors to make ‘SKYTOPIA’ a key economic driver of Hong Kong and beyond,” remarked Fred Lam, Chairman of AAHK, according to a Hong Kong International Airport report.

AAHK is currently developing detailed plans for Skytopia and actively seeking partnerships with investors and stakeholders to bring this visionary project to life.
